Abstract

Religious extremism poses a significant threat to peace and social stability, particularly in Indonesia, where religious intolerance and violence are on the rise. According to the Setara Institute, there were 333 incidents of violations of religious freedom in Indonesia in 2022, marking a 19% increase from the previous year. Research is needed to understand how cultural acceptability can help mitigate extremism and promote interfaith coexistence. This study seeks to explore how interfaith openness in Jember builds social capital and prevents extremism, examine the effectiveness of interfaith dialogue and community leadership in preventing extremism, investigate how interfaith participation in cultural celebrations strengthens community solidarity, and assess the importance of interfaith harmony in shaping social identity and preventing conflict. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through participatory observation and in-depth interviews with members of the Hindu community and surrounding residents. The findings include: 1) Theory of Religious and Social Tolerance: Interfaith openness in Jember fosters social capital through non-discriminatory participation, strengthening social cohesion and control, and preventing extremism through mutual trust. 2) Extremism and Social Response: Interfaith dialogue and community leadership effectively prevent extremism and maintain social stability. 3) Cultural Celebration and Inclusivity: Interfaith participation in cultural celebrations enhances solidarity among residents. 4) Theory of Coexistence: Interfaith harmony is integral to the community’s social identity, supporting social stability and preventing future conflict.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of Sharia compliance on the economic resilience of women-led micro and small enterprises (MSEs) in Madura, Indonesia. Sharia principles, which emphasize the prohibition of riba (interest), gharar (ambiguity), maysir (gambling), and unethical activities, along with fairness and risk-sharing, align closely with the cultural and religious values of Madura. Using a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were gathered through surveys from 100 women entrepreneurs, and qualitative insights were obtained through in-depth interviews with 20 selected participants. The results indicate that adherence to Sharia compliance positively and significantly enhances financial stability, facilitates ethical investment diversification, and fosters community trust. This alignment with Islamic principles not only strengthens the economic resilience of businesses but also contributes to broader social well-being. The findings suggest that Sharia compliance serves as a strategic foundation for sustainable development in culturally rooted economies like Madura. Future research is encouraged to explore this model in other sectors and regions to expand its applicability.

Abstract

TikTok has brought global attention to 75 years of Israel’s occupation. It has transformed into a platform that catalyzes significant social and political activism, creating a robust public forum for amplifying content related to Palestine while simultaneously countering Israeli propaganda. As TikTok evolves into a battleground for public opinion, Israel's narratives are increasingly eroding. Meanwhile, more people are beginning to recognize the resilience of Palestinians amidst the crisis. This shift has contributed to a growing number of TikTok users, particularly in the West, who are encouraged to explore the Palestinian background as Muslims. This exploration has, in turn, led to a rise in Muslim conversions in the West, a trend encapsulated by hashtags such as #WhiteReverts and #QuranBookClub. Using a qualitative methodology rooted in digital ethnography, this study involves content analysis of prominent materials extracted from TikTok and news platforms related to these trends spanning from 2023 to 2024. The analysis is further supplemented by library research to contextualize the growing attachment of TikTok users, especially in the West, toward Islam amidst the surge of Palestinian-related content on TikTok. The study concludes that the resilience displayed by Palestinians on TikTok has significantly influenced users’ growing awareness, prompting them to critically assess both Islamic teachings and Israeli propaganda. This awareness has, in turn, increased attention toward Islamic moderation in general.

Abstract

The Iran-Israel conflict in April 2024 attracted extensive global media coverage, with outlets like Al-Jazeera and BBC offering contrasting narratives. This study investigates their framing strategies using Semetko and Valkenburg's typology: conflict, human interest, economic consequences, morality, and responsibility frames. Galtung's peace and war journalism models provided an analytical lens to assess how these frames align with broader editorial biases and geopolitical contexts. Analyzing 34 articles, the research reveals Al-Jazeera's predominant use of the conflict frame (80%), emphasizing Iran's retaliation and regional tensions. This aligns with Galtung’s peace journalism, diagnosing systemic issues and contextualizing the conflict. Conversely, the BBC prioritized the responsibility frame (60%), heavily condemning Iran while dramatizing Israel's defense. This approach reflects war journalism, reinforcing divisions and Western-centric geopolitical narratives. The BBC's selective inclusion of human interest elements, such as civilian casualties, dramatized the narrative to evoke sympathy for Israel. Al-Jazeera's restrained use of such frames highlighted a commitment to balanced reporting but reduced emotional resonance. Neither outlet engaged with the morality or economic consequences frames, overlooking critical ethical and financial dimensions of the conflict. These findings underscore the role of editorial alignment and framing in shaping audience perceptions and policy discourses. Al-Jazeera’s approach encouraged critical engagement, fostering a nuanced understanding, while the BBC reinforced geopolitical alliances, narrowing the scope for reconciliation.

Abstract

This article explores Tunisia's transformation a decade after the Arab Spring in the social, political, legal, and educational fields. The methods used include qualitative descriptive analysis and social history. Data was collected through heuristic methods, utilizing online sources about Tunisia, such as scientific articles, journalistic reports, dissertations, and reports from international institutions. This article demonstrates that the transformation in Tunisia's socio-political, legal, and educational sectors is not only dynamic, reflecting the principles of a modern and democratic state, but also indicates a tendency to strengthen the stability of both the government and the state. Tunisia implemented new constitutional reforms in 2022 and transformed the education sector by improving both the quality and infrastructure of education. Based on these findings, the article concludes that a country's transformation, including that of Tunisia, is determined by the dynamics of its socio-cultural, political, legal, and educational structures

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explore the potential interconnections between spirituality, health, and recovery through Islamic spiritual approaches that can help overcome inner urges in drug-dependent patients. An Islamic approach, particularly ASWAJA, can play a significant role in shaping a person's behavior and attitude, especially by promoting the attitudes and behaviors exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad and his role models. This can foster the development of positive character traits that the individual may not have previously possessed. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach, featuring descriptive-analytical data presentation. To provide a comprehensive analysis, the study applies Islamic psycho-spiritual theory using an interpretive approach to explain and describe phenomena as expressed by participants. The consistent practice of ASWAJA by these drug-dependent individuals has demonstrated positive effects, particularly in their daily behavior, whether in social interactions within the community or in their worship of Allah SWT. Therefore, the ASWAJA approach shows potential as a method that can be further developed to address the challenges faced by dependent patients. Contextualizing the healing process with a spiritual approach offers an alternative treatment alongside medical interventions for drug-dependent individuals.

Abstract

Social justice is a fundamental principle underpinning the formation of a fair and prosperous society. In modern literature, John Rawls's theory of justice, which includes the Equal Liberty Principle and the Difference Principle, is widely recognized as a key framework for social justice in the Western world. However, this theory has been criticized for its lack of attention to the spiritual and moral dimensions relevant to religious societies. In contrast, Islam offers a more holistic concept of social justice, implemented through waqf as a sustainable wealth redistribution mechanism. This study critically analyzes Rawls's theory of social justice from the perspective of Islamic social justice, specifically through waqf. Using a qualitative method with a descriptive-comparative approach, it explores the key differences and similarities between these two concepts. The findings indicate that while both seek to achieve justice, the Islamic concept, embodied through waqf, incorporates spiritual and moral dimensions absent in Rawls's theory. In conclusion, this study provides a more comprehensive perspective on social justice by integrating Islamic principles, particularly waqf, as a complementary alternative to Rawlsian justice. The research aims to enrich the literature on social justice and serve as a foundation for further studies on the application of Islamic justice concepts in modern society.

Abstract

This research is based on the fatwa of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) on the prohibition of interfaith greetings, which has sparked widespread debate in Indonesia's pluralistic society, which has given rise to tensions between Islamic theological values and the demands of social diversity in the context of religious pluralism. This research aims to analyze the fatwa from the perspective of postmodern social theory. The scope of the study covers the theological, sociological, and social implications of the fatwa's implementation in society. The method used is a qualitative study with a document analysis approach and a literature review of the official MUI statement, public responses, and postmodern social theories. The results of the study indicate that the MUI fatwa is based on efforts to maintain the purity of the Islamic faith, but in the context of a pluralistic society it can give rise to social exclusivism and resistance to the values of inclusivity. In conclusion, although this fatwa has a strong normative basis from a religious perspective, its implementation requires a more adaptive socio-cultural approach to avoid polarization amidst the diversity of Indonesian society.
