Abstract

Maritime transportation is essential for mobility, fisheries, and goods distribution in remote coastal regions; however, reliance on small vessels is often accompanied by limited safety knowledge and inconsistent application of basic precautions. This community service program aimed to strengthen maritime safety knowledge and awareness among maritime actors in Tambrauw Regency, Southwest Papua, Indonesia. A one-group pretest-posttest intervention was conducted on 9-10 December 2025 with 22 participants, including traditional fishermen, motorboat operators, coastal residents, community leaders, and officers of the Tambrauw Regency Transportation Agency. The program combined structured counseling, interactive discussion, practical demonstrations of life-jacket use, recognition of navigation signs, basic emergency-response procedures, and information on formal maritime training opportunities. Knowledge was assessed using a 20-item multiple-choice test administered before and after the activity. The mean score increased from 45.0 (SD 7.15) to 80.0 (SD 5.28), representing a 35-point gain. Knowledge-category distributions shifted from 77% low and 23% moderate at baseline to 73% high and 27% moderate after the program. A paired-samples t-test showed a statistically significant pretest-posttest difference, t(21) = -26.22, p < .001. These findings indicate a substantial immediate improvement in measured maritime safety knowledge following the intervention. However, the single-group design, absence of a comparison group, unreported validity and reliability coefficients, and lack of behavioral follow-up limit inferences about causality and long-term effects. Periodic refresher training, practical drills, consistent use of safety equipment, and continued coordination with local authorities are recommended to support sustained maritime safety practices and preparedness for routine voyages and emergency situations

Abstract

Population ageing is accelerating in Malaysia, creating an urgent need for community-based approaches that strengthen mental-health literacy and social support among older adults. This community engagement programme evaluated a healthy-ageing knowledge-transfer session delivered at a Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE) centre in Miri, Sarawak. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used because the original programme did not include a control group. Nineteen valid questionnaires were analysed after a 2.5-hour face-to-face session on 19 June 2025. The intervention covered healthy ageing, depression in later life, protective factors, and the role of structured social support. The instrument comprised sociodemographic items and 10 knowledge questions administered immediately before and after the session. Because only summary percentages were available, analysis was descriptive and focused on percentage-point changes. Participants were predominantly women (68.4%), with a mean age of 66.16 years. The largest gains occurred for knowledge of major protective factors against depression (+31.5 percentage points), awareness of the proportion of older adults affected by mental-health problems (+26.3), understanding of structured social support (+15.8), and recognition of PAWE’s role (+10.5). Three abstract or exception-based items declined after the session. The programme was feasible and showed promising short-term educational gains, but the absence of a control group and paired individual-level data limits causal interpretation. Future programmes should use booster sessions, age-friendly visual materials, and controlled or paired-data evaluation.

Abstract

Mangrove ecotourism can link coastal conservation, environmental education, and local economic development, yet community-based destinations often face limited ecological literacy and weak digital-promotion capacity. This community service programme aimed to strengthen the ecological knowledge and digital-promotion skills of stakeholders in the Kalimireng Mangrove Ecotourism Area, Manyarsidomukti Village, Gresik, Indonesia. A one-group pretest-posttest community intervention was conducted on 20 May 2026 and followed by one month of social-media mentoring. The programme involved 30 core community partners—15 ecotourism managers and 15 participants representing fishers, PKK women, waste-bank members, and environmental groups plus 20 accompanying participants. The intervention combined a 30-minute mangrove-ecology and conservation session, a 60-minute hands-on tutorial using ChatGPT and digital design tools, collaborative poster production, a digitalisation guidebook, and follow-up mentoring. Outcomes were assessed descriptively using aggregate pretest-posttest percentages documented in programme records and evidence of digital-content production. Knowledge of mangrove vegetation increased from 50% to 90% (+40 percentage points), conservation-based ecotourism from 80% to 100% (+20), digital ecotourism from 10% to 90% (+80), and tourism-village promotion strategies from 50% to 100% (+50). Participants also produced promotional posters during training. The programme showed promising short-term gains, particularly in digitalisation, and demonstrated immediate practical application. However, the absence of a control group, individual-level paired data, documented instrument validity, and post-mentoring outcome data limits causal inference and conclusions about sustainability. Continued mentoring, standardised measurement, and follow-up monitoring of independent content production, digital reach, visitor engagement, and conservation behaviour are recommended

Abstract

Educational support staff play an important role in supporting the quality of academic and administrative services in higher education institutions. However, high workloads, multiple job responsibilities, organizational changes, and limited psychological support may contribute to increased occupational stress. As a newly established institution, Sunan Gresik University faces challenges in developing effective work systems while maintaining the psychological well-being of its human resources. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of educational support staff in recognizing and managing occupational stress through a psychology-based stress management education program. The program involved 16 staffs from Campus B of Sunan Gresik University and was conducted on June 22, 2026. The intervention applied educational, participatory, and empowerment-based approaches through stress management education, interactive discussions, self-reflection activities, stress management simulations, and practical exercises using the Weekly Planner and Workload Control Sheet. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pre-test and post-test assessments measuring participants’ understanding of occupational stress, psychological well-being, and stress management strategies. The results indicated an improvement in participants’ knowledge after the intervention. The mean score increased from 39.5 in the pre-test to 72.0 in the post-test, with an average increase of 32.5 points. Furthermore, 93.75% of participants achieved a very high knowledge category after the program. These findings demonstrate that psychoeducation-based stress management interventions combined with practical activities are effective in enhancing participants’ understanding and ability to manage workplace stress. This program highlights the importance of structured stress management education as an effort to strengthen human resource capacity and promote a healthier, adaptive, and productive work environment in higher education institutions.

Abstract

Rural communities often face challenges in increasing the market value of locally produced goods when packaging capabilities and basic business-management skills are limited. Coconut-shell biomass briquettes have potential both as a renewable-energy product and as a means of utilizing locally available biomass residues. This community engagement program aimed to strengthen the capacity of a rural women’s group in packaging innovation and basic business-feasibility analysis for coconut-shell biomass briquettes. The program was conducted in Karangcangkring Village, Dukun District, Gresik Regency, East Java, on 23 May 2026 and involved 22 members of a women’s community group. A participatory approach combined interactive lectures, demonstrations, hands-on packaging design using Canva, group discussions, and practical exercises in calculating the cost of goods manufactured, setting selling prices, estimating profit, and determining the investment payback period. Program evaluation relied on a post-training questionnaire and facilitator observation. Participant responses were consistently positive: 61.9% strongly agreed that the packaging materials were easy to understand, 71.4% strongly agreed that they understood the importance of packaging, 57.1% strongly agreed that they could design product labels using Canva, 42.9% strongly agreed that they understood basic business-feasibility calculations, and 52.4% strongly agreed that they intended to apply the acquired skills. The financial simulation further showed that the reported production cost was below the proposed selling-price range. Overall, the program was well accepted and practically relevant. However, because no pretest or comparison group was used, causal conclusions regarding effectiveness or knowledge improvement cannot be drawn.

Abstract

University lecturers face overlapping academic, administrative, research, and community-service demands that may contribute to work-related stress and increase the need for burnout-prevention literacy. This community service program aimed to strengthen lecturers’ knowledge of burnout, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and simple mindfulness practices. A one-group pretest-posttest design was used with active lecturers at Campus B, Universitas Sunan Gresik. The intervention combined psychoeducation, interactive discussion, the STOP Technique (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed), and approximately three minutes of mindful breathing. The same evaluation instrument was administered immediately before and after the session, and mean scores were summarized descriptively. Posttest means were higher than pretest means across all six reported knowledge indicators: 4.63 to 4.84, 4.05 to 4.79, 4.18 to 4.68, 3.89 to 4.74, 3.47 to 4.79, and 3.47 to 4.63, corresponding to descriptive gains of 0.21–1.32 points. Facilitators also observed active participation during discussion and guided practice. These findings suggest immediate gains in measured knowledge following the program; however, they do not demonstrate improved emotion-regulation ability or reduced burnout because those psychological outcomes were not assessed directly. The absence of a control group, participant-level statistical analysis, and longer-term follow-up further limits causal interpretation. Workplace-based mindfulness psychoeducation may therefore serve as an initial promotive learning activity, while future programs should incorporate validated outcome measures and stronger evaluation designs

Abstract

Milkfish farmers in Pangkahwetan, Ujungpangkah, Gresik, commonly rely on visual observations and reactive responses to assess pond-water conditions, underscoring the need for accessible real-time monitoring. This community service programme introduced and demonstrated the Smart-Bandeng System, an Internet of Things (IoT)-based platform that integrates temperature, pH, and turbidity sensors with a web-based monitoring interface and a K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) classification component. The programme involved the Pangkahwetan Pond Farmers Association, comprising 30 farmers who manage approximately three hectares of ponds. Activities included socialisation, operator training, device installation, field demonstration, mentoring, and follow-up planning. During a documented two-hour field test, sensor readings were transmitted at five-second intervals. The available dataset recorded temperatures of approximately 28.00-28.19 °C and turbidity values of 29-30 NTU. pH was initially 7.03, rose abruptly to 12.68-13.08, and subsequently returned to 7.00. Because this rapid fluctuation was not verified using a calibrated reference instrument, it is interpreted cautiously as a possible sensor, calibration, electrical, or local sampling artefact rather than a confirmed pond-wide change. Programme documentation did not report sensor models, calibration accuracy, participant pretest-posttest outcomes, harvest effects, or validated KNN performance metrics. The primary documented achievement was therefore the successful deployment and real-time demonstration of a community-oriented monitoring prototype, rather than evidence of reduced harvest failure or improved production. Future implementation should prioritise sensor validation, verification of water-quality thresholds, model-performance assessment, operator competency evaluation, and longitudinal monitoring of technology adoption, pond management, and production outcomes before wider operational deployment

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools play a strategic role in empowering the community's economy through the development of productive business units. This study aims to identify the potential and constraints in the fish processing MSME sector at the MBI Mambaul Falah Islamic Boarding School on Bawean Island, as well as to formulate strategies for strengthening economic independence based on the Islamic boarding school community. The approach used in this community service activity is Participatory Action Research (PAR) through a spiral cycle that includes the stages of planning, action, observation, and reflection. The subject of this service is a fish processing business unit (bonggolan and fishball products) managed by alumni of the Islamic boarding school. Initial observations indicate that the processed fish products have advantages in terms of taste and competitive market potential. However, the sustainability of this business unit faces crucial obstacles, especially in the weaknesses of business management aspects (formal governance and financial records) and the simplicity of packaging. Cases of product damage (spoilage) were found during shipments outside the region due to unstandardized airtight packaging techniques and the absence of visual product identity labels. Through an integrated PAR-based mentoring program, it is recommended to optimize production technology, standardize quality, improve commercial packaging design, implement formal management, and expand digital marketing to achieve sustainable economic independence for Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital financial services has increased access to online lending while simultaneously exposing university students to greater financial risks due to limited financial literacy. Students living in dormitories are particularly vulnerable because they manage their personal finances independently with limited financial resources. This community service program aimed to enhance Islamic financial literacy as a preventive strategy against online loan usage among students residing at the Universitas Sunan Gresik dormitory. The program was conducted in collaboration with the Dormitory Management and involved 30 students from various study programs. An educational, participatory, and empowerment-based approach was implemented through five stages: pre-test, Islamic financial literacy training, education on online loan risks, budgeting practice using the Sharia-Based Student Budget Template, and post-test. Participants' knowledge was assessed using a ten-item multiple-choice questionnaire, while budgeting skills were evaluated through practical exercises and observation. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' knowledge, with the average score increasing from 39.3 in the pre-test to 87.0 in the post-test, achieving a Normalized Gain (N-Gain) of 0.79, which indicates high training effectiveness. The proportion of correct answers increased from 23.3–53.3% before the intervention to 73.3–96.7% afterward. Participants also demonstrated improved ability to prepare personal budgets, prioritize expenditures, and understand the risks associated with online loans. In conclusion, integrating Islamic financial literacy education with practical budgeting exercises effectively improved participants' financial knowledge and budgeting skills while promoting more responsible financial behavior. This training model can serve as a practical approach to strengthening students' financial independence and preventing dependence on online loans.

Abstract

Telaga Ngipik holds a strategic ecological, social, and economic role in Gresik, yet it currently faces critical environmental threats due to industrial pollution, land-use change, and low community environmental awareness. This community service program aimed to present an accurate, accessible environmental quality assessment system that drives behavioral change by integrating ecological science with socio-psychological approaches. The methods executed comprised four main stages: participatory needs assessment and application co-design, saprobic index biological monitoring model integration, psycho-educational digital interface development, and capacity-building workshops involving 50 local community members and stakeholders. The main results demonstrated that the developed digital application successfully converted complex phytoplankton saprobic index calculations into real-time, user-friendly visual bioindicator metrics (β-mesosaprobic to α-mesosaprobic classifications). Furthermore, capacity-building workshops achieved a 42.5% increase in participants' technical competence regarding digital water quality assessment and an 88% rise in environmental stewardship intention. Community engagement metrics revealed high application usability (System Usability Scale score of 84.2) and a 65% increase in self-initiated community water monitoring activities. In conclusion, the integration of biological indicators and socio-psychological approaches through an interactive digital platform effectively bridges scientific data with community literacy, empowering local populations to actively monitor, preserve, and restore the Telaga Ngipik aquatic ecosystem independently.
