One form of city marketing that is currently developing is the provision of city image or city branding. Brands can have 6 levels of understanding namely attributes, benefits, cultural values, personality, and users. Cultural values are very different, especially around socially embedded issues such as status, gender, family, ethics, and customs. City branding helps influence "transfer of value" by establishing a relationship between what culture sees as a desired city and a particular product. This research is a study of the city branding of Padang city or a brand that is considered to belong to Padang City, namely "Padang Your Motherland", "Serenity of Minangkabau", and "Padang Taste". To what extent does three brand of padang city influence consumer awareness of the values of Minangkabau culture that is dominantly adopted by the people of Padang City? Semiotic analysis and personal interviews were used to answer this research question. Some consumers are less aware of the commercial objectives of these three city branding. They don't seem to know much about the intentions of city branding makers "to play with their consciousness".

Many researchers have claimed the success of the application of problem-based learning in many fields of study. This learning model is in line with the constructivist principles, in which students are in the centre of the learning process. Moreover, problem-based learning model provides the opportunity for students not only to develop their hard skills, but also soft skills. In addition, it also strives to help students become independent and self-regulated learners. This is one of the main advantages of applying the learning model. This article attempts to provide a short review of problem-based learning model in teaching writing. Furthermore, the discussion will also focus on the issue by looking at some explanation found in accounting for the needs of the learning model in the 21st century-language learning

Many studies have contradicted the reading aloud with silent reading instruction in EFL classroom. However, each viewpoint has its own arguments. Those in support of a silent reading claim that there exists psycho logical involvement in the mind of each reader and any written content. Through silent reading activity, students are trained to grasp the meaning of the text as int ended by the writer. On the other hand, the power of reading aloud cannot be seen as simplistic. Some believe that out loud reading instruction aid students to acquire new words and correct pronunciation, and comprehend language forms and mechanics, especially those with low English p roficiency. The students of Business Administration Department, State Polytechnic of Malang learn English as a foreign language in their ESP class. However, they still have insufficient English proficiency. In their English class, the reading aloud activity has been practiced as a method of instruction. On the basis of the above-mentioned background, this study intends to obtain the perspectives of students towards reading aloud activity in their ESP class. The problems of the study include (1) students’ viewpoint toward the benefit of reading aloud activity; (2) whether students feel any improvement in their English and aspects of the improvement; and (3) sorts of problems they encount er when dealing with reading aloud. The data are analysed qualitatively. The findings indicate that the students view a lot of benefits in reading aloud activity as it is building their self-confidence, recalling vocabulary, improving pronunciation, and managing pace and intonation in their reading.

The advances in computer technology have brought the rise of computer-based instructional materials in many different fields including language learning. With regard to listening skill development, one obvious strength of the computer-based instructional materials is its capability of presenting audio component in various ways to improve students’ listening skill. For students who are preparing themselves to take a standardized test like Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the materials can even be designed to provide a high degree of customization that can be geared specifically to meet students’ pace of learning. However, it can be a big challenge to design a computer-based listening material capable of ensuring that learning indeed takes place while the students are using and exploring its contents. This paper aims to propose the application of Gagne's nine events of instruction in a computer-based test preparation listening material design. More specifically, this paper tries to provide guidance in the process of developing the user interface and the content presentation within the material as to match each part of the nine events. It is expected that this strategy will successfully activate the required cognitive process of the students and help them achieve established learning objectives.
