Abstract

Communication occurs when one can express his/her opinion, thought, idea on people, things and situations. Opinion-related meanings in language are regarded as resources of evaluation or appraisal in language. Not necessarily good or bad in a moral sense, attitude accompanies the language utterance every person utters. As one kind of appraisal resources, attitude plays an important role in the expression of interpersonal meanings of language. Attitude refers to a way that you behave towards someone or in a particular situation, especially when this shows how you feel.The aims of this study are to analyze five advertisements in terms of content and to look deeply into the language employed in the discourse of advertisement as well as to find out the Appraisal elements used by Thailand advertisers especially to promote their product and reach the target. In This study, it is found that judgment and affect are appraisal element that most used in Thailand Advertisement because judgment is used to evaluate human behavior towards the product, and affect is used to evaluate the benefit or advantage in the product.

Abstract

This research is designed in the form of research and development (R & D). It aims to develop an English Textbook for Junior High School students based on Social - Cultural of Ngada Flores. The Textbook is designed to include the cultural scope of Ngada Flores in the teaching materials. The subject matter is theme-based, in which each unit consists of themes drawn from the culturalcoverageofNgadaFlores. The learning model used in this development is the Dick & Carey model, this model has ten strategic steps that is; (1) identify the general objectives of the learning, (2) carry out the learning analysis (3) identify the input behavior and characteristics of the students (4) formulate the objectives of the work (5) develop the benchmark   reference materials (6) develop the learning strategy (7) and selecting learning materials (8) designing and executing formative evaluations (9) revising learning materials and (10) designing and executing summative evaluations. The result of study, in general, the comments and suggestions from the content experts stated that the development product of socio cultural-based English textbook provided with pictures and illustration was sufficient, taking it from the correctness, comprehensiveness, and accuracy aspects. The explanation on the learning content was self-explanatory, adequate disclosure and congruent, and significance to the characteristics of SMP students. The students’ assessment and comments described that they were interested and appreciated this textbook development product due to its representative content description, organized, relevance with the local culture, using simple and familiar language with attractive pictures that enhanced their motivation and curiousity in learning individually or in group.

Abstract

Language is a communication tool that is seen as a channel for delivering information or messages to others. Language is expressed through sentences that composed of several words in order to form a certain meaning. To form a certain sentence which is apply in a language must follow its rules. For example, Indonesian has a main element that must exist in a sentence, namely predicate or verb. The verb forms become the basic of forming the various sentences, including in determining the types of transitive and intransitive sentences. Predicate or verb is one characteristic that determines whether the sentence is transitive or intransitive in language skills. This reason is one of the authors' interests in discussing more details about the transitive and intransitive sentences of Savu language, which is one of the local languages in the East Nusa Tenggara Province, with speakers of the Savu tribe. Transitive and intransitive sentences in Savu have the most flexible additional elements which can be accompanied by various kinds of objects and adverb. Transitive sentences have two core arguments that are broadly called actors and undergoers, as in the following sentence: (1) ana  no  era do  due do; (2) ta ngedi ke no pidu bue moto; these two transitive sentences of Savu have two core arguments. The predicate on transitive sentences, namely: era  'having' in data (1): ngedi 'see' in data (2), with two core arguments, they are ‘ana no’ ‘his son’ 'and due do 'two people' in data (1), then, no ‘he’ and pidu bue motto ‘seven stars’ in data (2).. Whereas the intransitive sentence has no object. Then, the arrangement of functional elements is Subject + Predicate and Predicate + Subject. The following is an example of the intransitive sentence of Savu: (3) ta mari ina; (4) ro kako la rae; the intransitive sentence of Savu language indicates that they do not have objects. In data (3) ta mari  'laugh’ is the verb; ina ‘lady' is the subject. As well as in data (4) ro 'they’ is the subject, while kako la ‘go to' and rae ‘adverb of place’.

Abstract

Realizing the university's vision and mission requires teaching materials for the development of education and teaching. The development of forensic linguistic teaching materials is an application that is used to achieve goals, objectives, intention in dealing with various criminal cases that occur in the community. The aim of developing forensic linguistic teaching materials in higher education is an academic need in the current era.. It is a Research and Development Research. It is found that many students are interested to study about forensic linguistics. It is also supported by the lecturers who think that by teaching this lesson in the university will develop their knowledge and skill in linguistics

Abstract

Needs analysis was conducted in Polytechnic of Energy and Mineral with the aim of identifying the students’ English needs. This was conducted by analysing the present English learning and teaching material and the needs of the material the students expect in order to perform effectively in the target situation. In conducting the analysis, a mixed method design was used in which it integrates the quantitative method and qualitative method. The questionnaires were used as the instruments for collecting the data from the alumni who had already worked in the petroleum industry and from the students who were still studying at Polytechnic of Energy and Mineral. The qualitative data from the alumni showed that English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills were really needed in the petroleum industry. Then, the quantitative data and the qualitative data from the students showed that the present English learning and teaching material had already guided them in obtaining the English skills required in the petroleum industry. However, the qualitative data also showed that the listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities in the material still needed to be improved in terms of the quantity, variety, and levels of difficulty. These findings were going to be followed up by the development of the English learning and teaching material as the improvement of the present material.

Abstract

In this research, the writer attempts to find out the translation procedures in the translation of movie subtitle: Zootopia from English to Indonesian subtitle to determine the intended audience of the movie. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research are the utterances or sentences in movie subtitle both English and Indonesian with the source of the data of this research is Zootopia movie. The writer used Indonesian subtitle from the site called subscene where the translators around the world could translate movies into many languages. The data collected by watching the movie with both English and Indonesian subtitles, and categorized the collected data based on each translation procedures of Newmark. The writer figured out that the intended audience is all ages group and the writer also found ten translation procedures used in the movie subtitle: Zootopia. The ten translation procedures are couplets, modulation, paraphrase, reduction, literal translation, cultural equivalent, transference, functional equivalent, naturalisation, transposition/shifts. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the intended audience of Zootopia movie is all ages group and there are ten from nineteen procedures are found in the movie subtitle: Zootopia.

Abstract

This study discusses aboutNeeds Analysis of English Department Students in Translating Text for Completing The Final Project at State Polytechnic of Padang. The purpose of this research specifically is to find out what are the needs related to the students difficulties when they are translating text, and what are the best procedure, strategy or method used to translate any kinds of text . The data are collected from English department students who are taking translation for their final project. This study can give a contribution for developing translation curriculum at English Department State Polytechnic of Padang.The data collection methods use questionnaires, observations, and interviews. These methods are important to get information about the the difficulties experience during translating text, students skills that need to be improved, and other additional information. By conducting this needs analysis study, the lecturers will know what the proper method or material that needs to be applied in teaching learning process. It also can be used to develop teaching and learning material. Moreover, these identificationscan be used to find and revise the previous course content in translation. Therefore, it is hoped that the students could be helped when they are writing their final project about this topic.This research starts by designing the needs analysis questionnaires for the students, the ex students, and the related parties. Then, it is tested to find out the validity and reliability. After getting the validity and reliability data, the questionnaire is distributed to the students, ex students, and teachers or industry. The result shows that there are three kinds of needs which have to be fulfilled in order to improve students skills in translating text for the final project, they are: objectives needs, learning needs and the learner’s needs.
