Abstract

The objective of this research was to figure out the students’ dominant interpreting skills and process during the interpreting practice to hone their interpreting ability in English-Indonesia Interpreting class. This research was conducted to the last years university students and took 20 students as sample that taken by simple random sampling. This research employed the descriptive method. The instruments of this research were oral test and monitoring guide for observing interpreter practice. The result of this research located that the students’ oral test score was 6. It pointed out that students’ interpreting skill in fair level. Meanwhile, the average score of their decoding skill was 24. It showed that their decoding skill was at the very poor level. The student’s accuracy average score was 2,1. It pointed that they got the needed improvement level, and the average score of the student’s recording skill is 0.3. It means that they are in the unacceptable level in interpreting practice. The conclusion of this research is the students still having the lack of interpreting skill and process. They tend inconsistent in interpreting process.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the colonial problem in the archipelago which still leaves a trail of oppression as well as the struggle of the natives to escape the impact of this ideology. The colonial trail that still lags behind creates an indigenous group that becomes a subaltern - an isolated, oppressed, and exiled group. In the postal colonial subaltern theory Gayatri Spivax stated that among the groups that were the most victims of colonialism were the subalterns. Relevant to the problem, this study aims to describe the forms of discrimination against subaltern groups, especially women who become subaltern groups, against colonial ideology. Data obtained from Saraswati : Gadis dalam Sunyi shortstory by A. A Navis that is analyzed qualitatively. Based on research data sources namely Saraswati : Gadis dalam Sunyi shortstory by A. A Navis. The results of this study indicate that the figure Saraswati became subaltern because she is marginalized, economically impoverished, labeled, and sexually abused.

Abstract

Viewed in the past 10 years, poetry musicalization had become a trend in Indonesia. Many groups change a written poem into musical. Not only creating musical poetry, this group also utilizes technological developments to publish it. The publication is done by uploading poetry musicalisation to social media so that it can be listened by public. One of the groups best known for the music he created is the Ari-Reda group, which from the beginning focused on the poems of Sapardi Djoko Damono. Of course, many things can be highlighted when looking at the process of reproduction of a work. One of them expressed a desire as an effort to fulfill themselves. Ari-Reda in this case, expressed desire through the poem "Aku Ingint" by Sapardi Djoko Damono.  The results show that Ari-Reda's desire to the poemss as a fulfillment of desires between humans and humans and humans with love that is never finished because it never having time to say the desire.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the use of social media as a medium in learning writing skills. The subjects of this survey study were 124 second-year students of the English Study Program, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education, Universitas Riau (2019 batch) selected using the total sampling technique. There were 85 out 124 students who completed the questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. This study showed that the kinds of social media that are commonly used in learning writing are Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Some specific writing skills learned through social media claimed by the respondents included learning new vocabulary, grammatical structure, correct spelling, paragraph development, correct capitalization, correct punctuation, unified ideas, and coherent ideas. Respondents also reported that they used social media for several purposes: adding references and information, taking as learning resources, developing creativity, collecting assignments, conducting online discussion, exchanging learning materials with classmates, and sending material in learning writing skills. It can be concluded social media has been part of significant alternative learning media used by students to improve their writing skills.

Abstract

In the field of English teaching and learning, the Covid-19 outbreak brings a challenge to English lecturers in order to be able to maintain the continuity of English teaching and learning online by using ICT tools effectively. Thus, this study sought to investigate the uses of ICT tools and the barriers related to the uses of ICT tools in teaching English. Drawing upon a qualitative method, 12 English lecturers at IAIN Curup were purposively selected to be the subjects of this study. Interviews and open-ended questionnaire were deployed to garner the data from the subjects, and the data were triangulated and analyzed using an interactive model of analysis. The findings revealed that the English lecturers used various ICT tools in different ways and purposes. However, some barriers led them to some difficulties of using ICT tools. The barriers were such as: not all ICT media that had been prepared either by the institution or personally could be applied properly; difficulty in playing the roles of lecturers, as were usually done without the highly technical ICT media; the difference in expectations between lecturers and students related to the ICT media used; difficulty in building an interactive atmosphere when using ICT media; and difficulty in providing effective learning responses when using ICT media.

Abstract

This research discusses the worldview of the author in the novel Sabariah with the approach of Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism theory. Hamka's work was first published in 1928 with an Arabic-Minangkabau script. After being lost from circulation for decades in 2019, Gema Insani has republished the novel, still with the same time and atmosphere as 1928, but already in Indonesian. Researchers explore the genesis and world view of the author in the novel. The unique thing is that the Sabariah novel was previously published in kaba-style Arabic-Minangkabau script. Hamka's first novel is different from his later novels. They have followed the official spelling of the Dutch East Indies government. This research uses Lucien Goldmann's dialectical method that works reciprocally from part to whole. The novel Sabariah originates from the genesis of the bakaba tradition in Minangkabau which inspired the birth of the novel Sabariah, a phenomenon that often occurs at that time when many women fate are hanged without strings, which led to the birth of the fasakh of marriage which was initiated by Islamic reform scholars in Minangkabau. One of the characters is Haji Abdul Karim Amrullah, Buya Hamka 's father.The phenomenon of being hung without strings is also reflected in the novel Sabariah which is experienced by the character Sabariah himself, which causes polemics between characters. The worldview of the author in the novel Sabariah is the world view of humanism and religion.

Abstract

This study attempts to find the purpose behind Trump's political speech by using the theory of the illocutionary act by Searle and the power dimension theory by Lukes. The data of this study is one of Donald Trump's speeches titled TRUMP AND CORONAVIRUS TASK FORCE HOLD WHITE HOUSE BRIEFING, uploaded by NBC News Youtube Channel on April 19, 2020. A qualitative method is required to gain the objective and specific result. The result shows that Trump uses assertive, commissive, expressive, and directive illocutionary speech consist of ideological power or manipulation that reveal some purposes behind Trump's political speech. The ideological power used in Trump's speech in manipulating and persuasion can influence and shape people's perception. As president of the US, his utterances aim to show the greatness of the country he leads in handling a pandemic outbreak. Also, some of Trump's utterances express aversion towards China because of the trade war and the COVID-19 virus that infected his people. Moreover, one of his utterances purposes of manipulating Iran to deal with the nuclear program. Also, Trump's utterance used to direct American to choose him in the coming presidential election.

Abstract

Writing anxiety has been considered a significant hindrance for most Indonesian EFL students. With a growing number of available literatures on this issue, this paper aims to grasp the trends and deliver some implications to the national and local context. The available researches are the ones that have been published from 2017 to 2021. The subjects in those researches are university students majoring in English department. This review is one of the steps in pre-research on students’ anxiety in research courses and it has been done by using scoping study method. Therefore, taken from the thirteen collected literature, the trends have been summed up into 1. Types and levels of writing anxiety; 2. Factors or causes of writing anxiety; 3. Strategies to reduce writing anxiety; 4. Implications. The findings show that cognitive anxiety, linguistic difficulties the dominant in the trends of types and factors of students writing anxiety. In respect to the level, the findings indicate that students have moderate to high anxiety levels while metacognitive and affective as the dominant strategies used by students. Thus, in general, the findings have strengthened the concept of writing anxiety as an obstacle in students’ writing skills. Overall, some other significant variables such as personality traits, teaching techniques, awareness, and affective factors should be taken in future studies, and practices in teaching writing.

Abstract

 English novels add new dimensions to augmenting the second language or foreign language learners’ skills and competencies. However, English novels have little roles in the Indonesian ELT context and gradually fade away from Indonesian EFL learning’s programs today. This study, therefore, aimed at diagnosing the effects of English novels on augmenting EFL learners’ language skills and competencies. This research entailed a qualitative research approach. The English Department (ED) students numbering 20 were the research participants. The interviews, focus groups, and participant observation were the key techniques of collecting data. The 1994 Miles and Huberman model of data display, data reduction, and conclusion were stages of analyzing the data. The findings show that reading English novels extensively and intensively develop the ED students’ language skills of higher thinking skills, vocabulary acquisition, and productive-receptive skills of English and linguistic and pragmatic competencies. In conclusion, English novels discover a love of the language, practically improve and develop the 2nd-year ED students’ exposure to English language and lead them to communicate like native English speakers.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students' perception on using Google Classroom during the COVID-19 pandemic in learning English. The subjects of this study were all eighth grade students of Islamic Junior High School (SMP Islam) As-Shofa Pekanbaru with the total of 105 students. This research was conducted by using a quantitative method. Data were collected using online questionnaire. The result showed that there were three indicators on using Google Classroom during COVID-19 pandemic in learning English; in terms of its usefulness, easiness and satisfaction. The result of the research shows that the average mean score was 3.72 which means students had highly positive response. It indicates that most students gave positive responses toward using Google Classroom during COVID-19 pandemic in learning English, most of students was agree that Google Classroom was easy to use and have good performance to use Google Classroom in learning English because Google Classroom facilitate the students to save and get materials, assignment, information and announcement, enhances students’ learning productivity, improves students’ performance, and students are satisfied and interested in learning English. This study implies that Google Classroom can be considered as one of alternative learning platforms that can be used by schools to learn English during pandemic situation and other emergency situations.
