Abstract

The importantce of Euphemism in speaking especially in public is done to maintain harmony in society. Euphemism itself is derived from the Greek which is eu means well and phenai means to speak. It is defined as a word or expression which is mild or indirect that substituted for one considered to be too hars or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing (Oxford Dictionary). As we know that language and culture are two things that cannot be separated, the usage of euphemism in conversation especially in traditional ceremonial is often occurred. This paper described the euphemism in Mandailing ethnic especially for traditional ceremonial which is called as mangupa that often be done in marriage ceremonial. This research is qualitative descriptive. The source of the data is the utterances which is delivered in marriage ceremony especially in part mangupa. Data was collected by using video recording, and face to face interview to get further information from elderly with average age 50 years old until 60 years old. The data analyzed based on the types and function of euphemism by Allan and Burridge (1991). While the meaning is based on the interview with erderly. Euphemism is often used in Batak mandailing wedding ceremony especially in part mangupa. There were twenty pharase that considered as the euphemism in the mangupa utterances that has been analyed based on Allan and Burridge. While the function of the euphemism that had been identified based on the Allan and Burridgein in this study, it can be found there are only two function.

Abstract

This study is a mixed methods case on English students in a Vocational Higher Education Institution (VHEI) in West Sumatera. It is aiming at investigating factors that influence English proficiency within this case study context by referrin g it to English teaching  and  learning  experience  in  high  schools.  This  research  attempt  was  specified  into  measuring:  (a)  the  differences  and correlation between the students English learning process at both vocational high schools and high schools in general in West Sumatera and the English skills of VHEI students. The methods of data collection are students’ survey, unstructured interview with teachers, and observations at 5 high schools and 5 vocational high schools in 5 different regencies in West Sumatera.  The findings reveal that only16.7% of the VHEI have the score ranged 50-75 on dan 83.23% students has very limited English speaking proficiency by the score 0-50.It is also found : (a) learning processes is similar to the learning situation at the VHEI  and there is significant correlation between these two learning situation, (b) students’ achievement in other subjects do not differ from their English speaking skill and there is no significant correlation between these two variables,

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explain the type, the strategy, the tactic and the cultural values of apologies in Karo language. The method used is qualitative descriptive in Sei Bingei sub-district as the research location. The data obtained from the in-depth interview and participant observation. Based on observation apologies in Karo language consists of (1) Apologies in Karo language can be appointed first, apologies before doing anything ( apology were made to maintain social norms in culture) such as sentabi, ersentabi, and tabik. Second, apology after making a mistake, the apology phrase used is nembah. (2) There are three strategies  for an apology in Karo language. Sentabiphrase included in the first category that is an explicit expression of apology, apology spoke clearly and the regret with minor mistake category. Nembah phrase as an apology for an acknowledgment of responsibility and apologies as a promise for not repeat the same mistakes. Nembah included in more complicated category strategies or serious mistakes. Strategy for an apology in Karo language (M), are speakers use word, phrase or sentences containing appropriate performative verbs in Karo language, such as tabik, sentabi, ersentabi, persentabin, nembah, nembah-nembah, jera, robah, lepak, erkadiola, mahap, and ngalemi. In Karo language, strategies (M) are very prominent on tradition activity for opening the activity. Strategy (M) also appear in serious apology, then continued with (TJ) responsibility and regret. (3) The cultural values in apology in Karo language consist of (a) the value of harmony, (b) the value of social and cultural, (c) the value of responsibility, (d) the value of divine.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to develop an interactive learning multimedia of reading for grade VII students of SMP N 1Piyungan, Yogyakarta. This research is a research and development (R&D) study. The development of the interactive learningmultimedia of reading was carried out through several steps, namely needs analysis, course grid design, product development,product validation, product revision, try-out, and final product development. There were some respondents involved in the study, i.e.one content expert and one media expert, 75 students or needs analysis, and 48 students for try-out. The data were collected throughclassroom observation, interview, and questionnaire. The instruments of data collection were observation guides, interview guides,expert validation sheets, and questionnaires for the students. The data were analyzed descriptively. The needs analysis data show thatthe students have various needs in learning reading through the interactive learning multimedia. For the learning needs, the studentschose various reading topics, such as hobbies (73.81%), stories (54.76%), things around us (42.86%), life in school (27.38%), andteenage life (26.19%). Some of them (40.48%) preferred reading text with 100-200 words of length. Meanwhile, for the target needs,the students preferred learning reading to improve their vocabulary (71.43%), find the main idea (58.33%), find the moral (47.62%),find the general information (48.81%), and find the meaning of words in the reading text. Some of them preferred the pictured-cueditem (46.43%), the multiple-choice (44.05%), matching (40.47%), the comprehension questions (40.47%), the short-answer (40.48%),and the ordering tasks (29.76%) for the reading learning activities. Besides, the appropriate interactive learning multimedia ofreading for grade VII students in junior high schools consisted of four reading units, namely Things around Us (descriptive text),Professions (descriptive text), Foods and Drinks (procedure text), and Hobbies (procedure text). Every unit made up of the fivecomponents: Playing with Words, Let’s Read , Did You Know, Upgrade Your Reading, and Mini Dictionary. The experts’ validation datashow that the developed interactive learning multimedia of reading was "good" based on a total mean of 4.17 on a 5-1 Likert scale.The content aspect data analysis results show a mean of 4 and the media aspect shows a mean of 4.35. In addition, the results of thetry-out indicate that the content aspect is in the "good" category with the mean of 4.01, the presentation aspect is in the "good"category with the mean of 3.83, and the media aspect is in the "good" category with the mean of 4.01.

Abstract

Vocabulary has become the key aspect in learning language and it should be introduced through an interesting way. One way to mastery it is through Spelling Bee game. In line with that Lewis and Hill (“1998) stated that student will not achieve success in learning unless they enjoy the process will influence their achievement. This study entitles The Influence Of Spelling Bee Games To Improve Students'Vocabulary Mastery In Using ICD-10 Chapter Chapter XVIII and XXI At Apikes Iris Padang discovers the effectiveness of the use of Spelling Bee in teaching vocabulary. The sample is given Spelling  Bee treatment that was adopted from Stone (2010).The data of this study are obtained through a post test.the post- test is given in the form of spelling test. The data from the post test are analyzed statistically using SPSS 20 for windows. The result shows that the lowest score on the post test is 30.00 Meanwhile, the highest score is  95.00. The range of scores was 65.00. Dealing with central tendency, the averange score is 69.9231 and the  midpoint fell on 75.0000.  Then, the table also presents standart deviation which indicates the average variability of the scores from mean is 1.58482E. From the post –test result it can be seen student really influence by the spelling be game.

Abstract

Mengapa  siswa  malas  belajar  ?  Mengapa  mereka  tidak  terlibat  aktif  dalam  kegiatan  belajar  ?  Padahal,  mereka  telah memahami bahwa belajar adalah sebuah orientasi tujuan yang didukung oleh motivasi. Dalam belajar, siswa kadang-kadang mengalami kendala, kebosanan, ketidakpuasan, kemalasan dan ketidakbahagiaan. Untuk membantu siswa yang mengalami masalah belajar, penulis memaparkan dua puluh satu cara untuk memotivasi, dan membangkitakan partisipasi siswa dalam kegiatan belajar sebagaiberikut. Guru harus memberikan kepada siswa a sense of control, specify learning objectives, create a threat-free environment, change the atmosphere, offera variety of experiences, use positive competition, offer prizes, give them responsibility, allow achiever to work together, give praise when earned, encour age self-reflection, becomes excited, know the students, interest, helped the students find intrinsic motivation, manage student learners harnessanxiety, makehigh but achievable goals, provide feedback and offer opportunity to improve, track progress, make things funand provide them an opportunity for success. Dengan termotivasinya siswa dalam proses belajar, hasil yang akan diraih berdampak positif kepada presetasi belajar mereka.

Abstract

This study discusses how a phenomenon can affect civilization and the outlook on society. Prediction is so important to uncover major events that have occurred at a certain period or period. Forecast defined as attempts to acquire knowledge through occult ways or using certain rituals.   Said forecaster derived from Arabic which means a science Raml for interpreting, judging, see and predict the fate of someone in the future. Activities divination fortune-telling in the novel Sabdo Palon Pudarnya Surya Majapahit by Dhamar Shashangka refers to signs/phenomena that come from nature itself, namely with the emergence of a red lunar eclipse (blood moon) lunar eclipse, Chandra Kartika, earthquake, and head of the earth at Majapahit sky. The conclusions from this study indicate that predictions are so important to answer someone's curiosity and curiosity about things that are beyond the limits of ordinary human abilities and to reveal it all also requires help from someone who has extraordinary abilities and knowledge of the prophecy itself. In this novel, the translator is focused on the figure of Sabdo Palon

Abstract

This article aims to analyse the aggression that is done by the tributes of the hunger games; they are Katniss, Peeta, Cato, Clove, Glimmer, and Thresh. The writer focuses on pointing out two topics, firstly the depiction of aggression in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games, secondly the reason of aggression happened as depicted in Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games. The method used in this article is the concept of aggression by several experts to depict the aggression that is done by the tributes in the hunger games and the psychological approach of death instinct by Sigmund Freud and also the concept of aggression by Anderson & Bushman to find out the situational factors on the action of the aggression. The majority of the factors behind the action of aggression is following by the death instinct for destruction and the aggression is also because of the situational factors, such as aggressive cues, provocation, frustration, pain and discomfort, incentives, and drugs.Keywords: Aggression; death instinct; situational factors.

Abstract

This paper discusses the foods eaten by the slaves from Uncle Tom’s Cabin about the nature of slavery that happens in South America. There are two contrast setting of places in the novel—Kentucky and Louisiana—that each has different food presentations for the slaves, and each presentation can reveal the power relation between masters and slaves. In gastronomy, when food is done right in writing, certain scenes from fiction can get the readers to experience it with all their senses and strange cravings. The finding in this writing is that the slaves creatively change the scraps and leftovers into finely soul foods of in the first set of the place, Kentucky. The second setting is a place in Louisiana, the slaves cannot have the soul food because the lack of food itself has chained them forever in the slavery. Each of this food presentations has directly revealed the nature of power relation between masters and slaves.

Abstract

Speed, cost, and quality have been the central issues in the translation industry. While computers can offer fast and economical translation, their ability to produce accurate translation at a publishable level like human translators may do is still questionable. In the present study, the author linguistically evaluated the accuracy of English to Indonesian translation generated by Google Translate. Freely accessible English texts of various types were chosen to heuristically exemplify the units of analysis. The results of analysis lead to the conclusion that although Google’s Neural Machine Translation system is quite an improvement to the conventional phrase-based translation system, highly accurate translation does not seem to be achieved by Google Translate in the near future.
