Abstract

One form of church service activity during social restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic is online or virtual baptism. This virtual baptism has received criticism because it does not follow the Bible's teaching about baptism, especially the Acts concept. This study intends to reveal the Acts concept of baptism and then use it to evaluate the practice of virtual baptism. The research method used is a hermeneutic analysis using research results or studies from other researchers. The object of study is the narrative of the baptism of Peter, Philip, Ananias, and Paul. The results showed that: 1) firstly, baptism is a passive act, so it cannot be done only by the baptismal candidate; 2) baptism is carried out directly involving two parties, both the baptist and the person being baptized; 3) baptism must fulfill the koinonia in the worship of the people. Therefore, virtual baptism is irrelevant even in pandemic conditions.

Abstract

Everyone has the potential to experience mental disorders, both at mild and severe levels. People with mental disorders experience disturbances in thoughts, behaviors, and feelings that are manifested in the form of a set of symptoms or changes in behavior and can cause suffering and obstacles in carrying out people's functions as humans. The church has a vocation to minister to people with mental disorders so that they can live worthy lives in the image of God and be healed. However, to carry out this ministry, the church faces various obstacles. This study explores the church's challenges in serving people with mental disorders. The research subject is the Toraja Church of the Filadelfia Kondongan Congregation in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi. The research method used is qualitative. There were six informants: one pastor, three church councils, and two family members of the sufferer. Data were collected by interviewing techniques and analyzed using reduction, display, and conclusion. The study results indicate that the current challenge is the lack of knowledge and understanding of mental disorders, which has resulted in not formulating and implementing concrete programs for people with mental disorders in the congregation.

Abstract

Today some churches do not prescribe tithing but voluntary offerings. This study intends to conduct a study of churches that set voluntary offerings to find out: 1) whether the offerings given are lower or higher than one-tenth of income; 2) are the percentages the same for all levels in the church. The research subject is the Indonesian Protestant Church in Banggai Islands (GPIBK), one of the churches that do not apply tithing offerings. The research focuses on one of the largest congregations in GPIBK, the Kalvari Sabang Congregation, located in Sabang, North Bulagi sub-district, Banggai Islands district Central Sulawesi province. The method used is quantitative with a comparative study approach. A comparison of offerings is made based on social class, namely upper class, middle class, and lower class. The control variables are the total monthly income, the total monthly offerings to the church, and the percentage of the total monthly offerings to the church to the total monthly income. The unit of analysis is the family. The total number of families involved was 28 families. The study results are as follows: first, the Kalvari Sabang congregation gives offerings exceeding one-tenth of their income every month. The upper-class average is 12.52%, the middle class is 21.79%, and the lower class is 30.17%. Second, the percentage of offerings from the lower class is higher than that of the middle and upper classes. The lower the social class, the higher the percentage of giving to the church.

Abstract

In Toraja society, women tend to be seen as unable to survive without a man. This study wants to explore the story of Ruth and Naomi based on the book of Ruth, who lost her husband but survived and fought for a better future in a patriarchal society. Based on this story, the writer wants to contextualize it by using a praxis model in the lives of Toraja women. The research method used is qualitative with a literature study approach. The results show that: 1) women can make the best decisions for their families and face the risks; 2) women can be responsible for their families; 3) women can formulate effective plans and strategies for a better family future. The lives of Naomi and Ruth provide a theological message that Toraja women who still live in a patriarchal culture can also live like them. Toraja women can live independently, lead families, and ultimately contribute to wider life in society.

Abstract

This research aims to explore Kasiturusan culture as the Ethics of Socio-Theological Solidarity in the life of the Toraja people. Kasiturusan culture in Toraja society is essential in maintaining the unity and togetherness of the Toraja people. But in today's modern life, the culture of Kasiturusan has begun to erode and fade. This research uses the deconstruction method, data collection techniques through interviews and observations, and books and supporting articles. The results obtained are that the Kasiturusan culture is a culture that unites and strengthens the solidarity of the Toraja people through the elements contained therein. This culture is a medium that brings the Toraja people into a strong alliance. The love of Christ Jesus given to His people makes sense of solidarity well entwined in a strong and solid foundation.

Abstract

God's blessing is often understood as a gift, so it can make people not responsible for these blessings. In 1 Kings 9:1-9, there is a different teaching about God's blessings. This study aims to explore the meaning of God's blessing in 1 Kings 9:1-9 by using the exegesis method. The research results show that in 1 Kings 9:1-9 there are two meanings of blessing: unconditional and conditional. Because God loved Solomon, He blessed him with his glory and fame as the king of the kingdom of Israel. This is an unconditional blessing. But God also promised other blessings for Solomon and the Israelites. If they were obedient and loyal to Him, the kingdom of Israel would still be victorious. But if they disobey His orders, the kingdom's glory will be destroyed.

Abstract

This research aims to study from the perspective of Christian theology the concept of Batak culture regarding the authority of women as mothers in forming excellent characters in Batak families. The method used is qualitative. The research was conducted in Pematangsiantar in November-December 2022 with four informants. Two of them are female Batak leaders in the church and theological schools; the other two are youths from Batak families. This study found three roles of mothers who have authority in forming excellent characters in children. The three roles are sipartangiang (prayer), educating children to pray diligently, parsonduk bolon (preparing food needs), educating children to assume responsibility for life together, Ina Soripada (respectable mother), educating children to be polite, honest, and with integrity. Through these three roles, it appears that Batak mothers have the authority to carry out excellent character education for children. It is proven that children from families with such mothers have excellent characters that differ from their peers.

Abstract

Amid a pluralistic Indonesian society in terms of religion, interfaith marriage has the potential to occur. But until now, interfaith marriage is still being debated among Christians. The Apostle Paul in 1 Cor 7:12-16 states the prohibition to divorce unbelieving spouses. The research aims to explore the meaning of the prohibition on divorcing non-believing spouses and its relevance to Christians in Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative approach to literature study. The results of the study show that: 1) Paul's prohibition on divorcing unbelieving spouses is due to the belief that the process of sanctification of unbelieving partners can occur in marriage; 2) concerning marriage, the main thing is the creation of peace; 3) Paul's teachings are very relevant to be applied among Christians in Indonesia in the form of acceptance of interfaith marriages, which can also be seen as part of the realization of peace.

Abstract

Domestic violence (KDRT) causes misery for victims, especially women and children. Therefore the church needs to be involved in efforts to overcome it. But the fact is that churches, in general, haven't done much about domestic violence. This research seeks to discover the church's obstacles in overcoming domestic violence through research in the Persekutuan Jemaat Mandiri Protestan Banggai (PJM-PB) Korampotan Pondan congregation. The method used is qualitative, with interviews as a data collection technique. Data were analyzed with reduction, display, and conclusions techniques. The results show two dominant obstacles for the MPH Congregation in overcoming domestic violence: 1) cultural factors, namely values that perceive domestic violence as a private family matter that others should not know about and interfere with; 2) lack of knowledge about domestic violence. The theological factors usually an obstacle for the church are not found in this study.
