Abstract

Decision-making power of women is one of the essential factors which influence maternal health service utilization. Women's lack of decision over reproductive health service utilization affects their protection from unwanted childbearing, unsafe sex, and their consequences. To assess decision-making power on Reproductive Health service utilization and its associated factors among married women in South West Ethiopia, 2020. Cross-sectional study was conducted from May to July 2020 among 584 married women of the reproductive age. A total of 288 in urban and 288 in rural married women were interviewed and these yields a response rate of 98.6% both in urban and rural. Decision-making power over reproductive health service utilization in urban and rural was 55.2% [95% CI (52.7-64.6)] and 40.3% [95% CI (39.9-52.5)] respectively. In urban, being wives of government-employed spouses [AOR 2.102 95% CI (1.16, 3.81)], knowledge on RH [AOR 3.33, 95% CI (1.20, 12.49)], above five years in marriage [AOR 1.91, 95% CI (1.19,7.70)], were found to be predictors of women’s decision-making power over reproductive health use. The study revealed that in urban settings those women who had marriage duration five and more than five years, being wives of government-employed spouses had more likely decision-making power on reproductive health utilization but not in rural settings. Hence, reproductive health interventions in the area should be promoted by considering empowering married women on reproductive health service utilization.

Abstract

Malaysia is one of the most affected countries by hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) outbreak. Sabah, as a state of Malaysia, has an incidence of 2,200 HFMD cases in 2018. Kota Kinabalu hits the highest records of HFMD cases compared to other districts. Given the marked increase in HFMD cases, HFMD become a public health concern which is associated with a substantial economic and social burden. From the perspective of public health, it is important to study the disease patterns and associated risk factors. This paper describes the incidence of HFMD and potential demographic risk factors in this understudied Kota Kinabalu District. A total of 3,327 HFMD cases from year 2013 to 2018 were obtained from the Kota Kinabalu Health Office. Cases were classified according to year of incidence, patient’s gender, age, and ethnic. Incidence of HFMD and percentage of severe HFMD were calculated for each category. Odd ratio of severe HFMD for each category was assessed with logistic regression model. Chi-square tests were implemented to identify the association between the case characteristics and severe HFMD. This study found that male and Sabah indigenous group are predominant in HFMD incidence. Chi-square test indicated that severe HFMD is significantly associated with patient’s age and ethnicity.

Abstract

Even through smoking is a definite risk factor for lung cancer, it is possible for people who have never smoked to suffer lung cancer. This research aimed to describe the epidemiology of lung cancer in never smokers in Morocco. Also, an assessment of differences between men and women never smokers was performed. The researchers analyzed retrospectively all patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2014 and 2017. The results showed that of 606 patients, 157 (25.9%) were never smokers. Of these, 79 patients (50.32%) were women. Women were more likely to be younger (p=0.034), had adenocarcinoma (p=0.046), and being in advanced stage of the disease (p=0.032). Men were more exposed to professional carcinogens (p<0.001). Tuberculosis was the most frequent previous lung disease in never smokers, but no difference was noted between men and women. Performance status and comorbidities did not vary by gender. Never smokers in Morocco represent a significant proportion of lung cancer. Evident epidemiologic differences are found between men and women never smokers, notably, age, histological type and risk factor exposure.

Abstract

Stunting threatens qualified generation presence and greatly affects the success of a nation's development. The government has used many approaches to reduce the stunting except religious approach whereas in Indonesia as the majority Muslim country, many Indonesians are prone to follow religious leaders rather than a government official. The study obtained a strategy for accelerating stunting prevention through a religious approach. This analytic research used a qualitative approach with case study design. The participants in this research were 62 people namely advocacy, social support, and empowerment target in stunting prevention. The result showed that community empowerment in accelerating stunting prevention has not been optimally implemented. Even social support is adequate but Islamic religious counselors did not receive adequate information about stunting, so they did not optimally convey it back to the community. The policy for accelerating stunting prevention is adequate at the central, provincial, and district levels, however, the policies on religious approaches were limited. Strategy for accelerating stunting prevention through religious approach by using appropriate communication methods and channels such as pre-wedding counseling, Islamic study assemblies, and Friday sermons. Message structure or communication material on stunting prevention should become national policy.

Abstract

Breast cancer remains a global problem, including Indonesia. However, research findings regarding the influence of hormonal contraceptive use on breast cancer have not been conclusive. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether there was any association between hormonal contraception use and breast cancer among women in Indonesia. We assessed 3,517 participants who participated in this study conducted through the Indonesian Family Life Survey wave five during 2014-2015. A logistic regression model was performed to analyse data. The precentage of breast cancer cases in this study was 0.34%, with a total of 1,574 respondents (44.75%) having used hormonal contraceptive for more than five years. After controlling for confounders, the hormonal contraceptive use had significantly lower to have breast cancer incidence (ORadj=0.10; 95% CI=0.03-0.40; p<0.05) compared to women using non-hormonal contraceptive, while the long-term hormonal contraception use (more than five years) did not affect breast cancer incidence. Hormonal contraceptive use was associated with breast cancer; however, the evidence from our findings indicated that the magnitude of the risk was small.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed educational trends for all university students, including nursing and midwifery students (NMSs). In the future, these students will play critical roles in healthcare delivery systems. The purpose of the study was to examine knowledge, fear, and anxiety about COVID-19 among NMSs. A cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study involved 600 NMSs were performed through an online survey from February to March 2021 in Iran University of Medical Sciences. Data gathering was done using a demographic questionnaire, the COVID-related Knowledge Questionnaire, The Fear of COVID-19 Scale, and the Corona Disease Anxiety Scale. Instruments were provided to students through WhatsApp, Telegram, or email. The study instruments were completely answered by 415 students. Their age was 24.63±4.97 years, on average. Most participants were female (62.2%) and single (76.9%). The mean scores of their knowledge, fear, and anxiety about COVID-19 were respectively 13.41±1.32 (in the possible range of 0–15), 21.93±6.78 (in the possible range of 7–35), and 19.82±12.77 (in the possible range of 0–54). NMSs have great knowledge, relatively great fear, and mild anxiety about COVID-19. Flexible educational programs, close monitoring of fear and anxiety, and effective need-based education are necessary for NMSs, particularly during pandemics.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the 15-item smartphone addiction proneness scale (SAPS) among a sample of Malaysian adolescents. The gathered data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. There were 922 secondary school students involved in this study. The exploratory factor analysis extracted a three-factor solution for SAPS. These factors were named disturbance of adaptive functions, withdrawal and tolerance. Results from confirmatory factor analysis also indicated that the three-factor structure fits well with the data. The internal consistency of the scale was found to be good. The positive and moderately strong correlation between SAPS and three widely adopted criterion variables (depression, loneliness and boredom proneness) supported the concurrent validity of SAPS. The results of this study showed that the SAPS is a reliable and valid instrument for identifying problematic smartphone use among Malaysian adolescents.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period of searching for identity that requires information on reproductive health and sexuality so as not to fall into premarital sexual behavior. Parents play an important role in providing reproductive health information to adolescents, but parents are often reluctant to provide this information due to lack of support, and lack of confidence in providing reproductive health information. The purpose of this study was to determine the most influential factors between partner support, perceived barriers, and self-confidence in adolescent reproductive health education. The research method used analytical observation with a cross sectional approach which was conducted online in June-August 2020 to 300 parents who have teenagers aged 15-19 years in Surakarta. The sampling technique is Double Sampling using a self-confidence, partner support, perceived barriers and behavior in providing reproductive health information questionnaire that has been tested for validity. Bivariate analysis was performed using chi square and multivariate analysis was performed using logistic regression test. The results showed that parents' self-confidence was the most influential factor in reproductive health education for adolescents (OR=3.052, CI=1.534-6.071). Parents who have low self-confidence tend not to provide comprehensive reproductive health information to adolescents. Lack of skills to explain the topic of sexuality to teenagers is one of the things that affects parents' self-confidence. The lack of knowledge of the material that will be given and the shame when conveying sexuality material also affects the self-confidence of the parents. Training efforts are needed for parents on how to provide information on reproductive health to adolescents.
