Abstract

A cross-sectional study was carried out to assess the smoking habits of primary healthcare workers, their knowledge about the harmful effects and health risks of smoking, as well as their attitudes towards not smoking. A validated self-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. There were 261 primary healthcare workers in Perak, Malaysia recruited in this study. The results showed that there were only 4.6% (n=12) ever smokers and 2.7% (n=7) current smokers in this study. More than 75% of primary healthcare workers reported having friends and family members who smoked. The majority of the primary healthcare workers had good knowledge regarding the health risks and harmful effects of smoking. They also possessed positive attitudes towards not smoking. The females, those in the high-income group, the health service providers and the non-smokers had significantly higher scores in both their knowledge about smoking and positive attitudes towards not smoking (p<0.05). The primary healthcare workers with tertiary educational levels were significantly associated with positive attitudes towards not smoking (p<0.05). Gender and occupational status were the strongest predictors for knowledge about the health risks of smoking (p≤0.001), knowledge about the harmful effects of smoking (p≤0.001) and attitudes towards not smoking (p≤0.001). Health service providers, and females had the highest awareness of smoking. The high percentage of health service providers reported having friends and family members who smoked in this study should be given more attention. Implementation of more free-smoke areas could be use as strategy to reduce exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke.

Abstract

Job satisfaction is a contented feeling of employees when they are able to fulfill expectations for needs with good work-life balance conditions so that they can work effectively and efficiently. The goal of this study was to find out how workers in the shipyard industry feel about their work-life balance and how happy they are with their jobs. The variables were the characteristics of employees (age, education level, marital status, and years of service). The data were shown in frequency distribution tables and cross tabulations. Chi-square test was employed to analyze the data. The work-life balance of employees was related to their age (sig. 0.039), but not to their level of education (sig. 0.723), marital status (sig. 0.535), or number of years of service (sig. 0.724). The results of statistical tests on the two main factors showed that work-life balance and job satisfaction were linked (sig. 0.019). Overall, employees in the shipyard industry were much happier with their jobs when they had a good balance between work and life. The company is expected to maintain the work-life balance of its employees to increase the job satisfaction of the workers and indirectly increase the achievement of work productivity in the company.

Abstract

Heart diseases remain one of the major health concerns worldwide, inflicting a tremendous financial burden, especially in low to middle-income countries like the Philippines. An exhaustive time-trend analysis, including recent data, is essential to measure the nation's progress in cardiac health, capturing the effect of national-scale changes over time. Thus, using stored data from the Philippine health statistics, this study analyzed trends and profiles of heart disease mortality in the Philippines from 1960 to 2019 and discussed relevant national policies for greater recognition and awareness. Ischaemic heart disease constituted the most significant proportion of mortality among all types. Steadily increasing trends by cause, gender, age group were observed, and with males and the elderly population having higher rates. Regional differences also existed, having the highest rates in Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao respectively. Like global patterns, heart disease remained one of the country's leading causes of mortality over decades. Differences between genderes, age groups, and regions are attributed to complex and interrelated factors making males, the elderly, and highly urbanized areas most vulnerable among the population.

Abstract

Many evidence revealed that physical activity (PA) has positive effects on pregnancy outcomes. Healthy pregnant women are suggested to have a combination of PA in light to moderate-intensity activities for 150 minutes per week. The purpose of this study was to analyze the type, the intensity of PA of pregnant women, and the average energy expenditure per week. A cross-sectional study involving 110 pregnant women who came from four community health centers in Bandung city, Indonesia was carried out from April to June 2021. The pregnancy physical activity questionnaire (PPAQ) was used to collect data. Descriptive data were presented using median and percentile. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis test were used to statistical test. The results of the study where the median energy expenditure per week was 250.50 METs. Most of the PA was light-intensity activities and household/child caring activities. There were still 10% pregnant women who did not exercise. Employed pregnant women had energy expenditure per week higher compared to unemployed pregnant women. Sports/exercise activities were seldom been carried out. This study demonstrated that during pandemic COVID-19, pregnant women are still doing PA. During pandemic COVID-19, health care providers should motivate healthy pregnant women to exercise by creating innovations using social media or online platforms so that pregnant women can exercise at home safely.

Abstract

Hospital service in Albania is facing difficult challenges, always trying to evolve and reform not only related to the high demand for improvement on the available infrastructure and technology, but also due to the private hospital services competition in keeping medical staff and patients with the obligation to ensure quality care, as a fundamental human rights requirement. The purpose of this study is to make an overall assessment regarding the quality of health care in the private sector in Albania and patient satisfaction related to this service. This paper also aims to determine the main factors that play a role in patient satisfaction, and their level of importance, to provide appropriate recommendations that will support the improvement of the quality of service and increasing patient satisfaction in this sector. The instrument used for quality assessment is SERVQUAL, with five main dimensions selected (responsiveness, reliability, safety, tangibles and empathy). Data processed for 400 interviewed patients shows the correlation of patient satisfaction with only four of the elements considered. Hence, the results obtained will back applicable recommendations for developing quality and increasing patient satisfaction.

Abstract

Adolescents were vulnerable to problems related to reproductive health. Generation Z was the largest proportion in Indonesia who was born with internet and technology literacy. Internet and social media were meaningful for them. In 2018, 57% of adolescents worldwide search out porn using the internet. This study’s goal was to analyze pornography access among males and female’s adolescent. This was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was high school students in Yogyakarta. A multistage random sampling was employed, involving 80 respondents. The data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, and logistic regression. The results showed that all the respondents had smartphones and accessed media social. WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube were the most accessed. Most of them (57.5%) had access to pornography through films, short videos, and also pictures. Multivariate analysis showed that male adolescents (Exp B=13.7) had a greater risk of accessing pornography compared to females. Access to more than 4 types of social media also increases access to pornography (Exp B=6.8). Adolescence needs more information, and also guidance from family, school also community related to their use of smartphones and social media to prevent access to pornography as the opening gate for sexual risk behavior.

Abstract

Genetic literacy is essential for promoting health and well-being in modern society. Although its importance is increasingly recognised, the definition and crucial dimension to construct a conceptual model are unclear, limiting the possibilities for measurement and comparison intervention. The study aims to review definitions and the conceptual models of genetics literacy and develop a new comprehensive definition and conceptual model based on the discovered dimensions that are relevant in the post-genomic era. We performed a systematic literature review using the Crossref, PubMed, and Scopus databases with Publish or Perish software. An automated content analysis was conducted to identify and develop conceptual model genetics literacy using NVivo 12 software. The review resulted in 10 definitions and 12 conceptual models. Automated content analysis showed that genetic literacy is defined as the ability of an individual to comprehend, use, correlate, assess, and propose genetic information to make arguments, reason, and decide on genetic issues in maintaining or improving the quality of personal and social well-being. Genetic literacy was conceptualised as a set of knowledge, a set of skills or interconnected. The conceptual model of genetics literacy covers two dimensions. i) Knowledge dimension: conceptual (nature of genetic material, transmission, genetic expression, genetic regulation, genetic determinism, genetic technology); sociocultural; epistemic. ii) Skills dimension: argumentation, informal reasoning, and decision-making skills. This definition and conceptual model can serve as a basis for developing interventions and measurements to support regulating, preventing, as well as promoting health and well-being.

Abstract

Low awareness and underdeveloped instruments evaluating elderly Malaysians’ well-being, social support, and independence necessitate lubben social network scale (LSNS), social provisions scale (SPS), Katz activities of daily living (ADL), and life satisfaction index (LSI) development and evaluation involving 201 60-year-old males and females (purposive samples) in Kuching and Bintulu participated (June to August 2022). Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) examined the construct validity of LSNS, SPS, Katz ADL, and LSI, whereas principal axis factoring (paf) and orthogonal (varimax) rotation with Kaiser Normalisation validated their psychometric properties and internal consistency reliability using Cronbach’s alpha. Social integration (0.94), reassurance of worth (0.91), attachment (0.90), sense of reliable alliance (0.78), and guidance (0.74) have eigenvalues >1 in the SPS-10 EFA; good Cronbach’s alpha reliability values. Family (0.77) and friends (0.73) of LSNS-6 factors have eigenvalues >1, good Cronbach’s alpha reliability values. Acceptance-contentment (0.87) and Achievement-fulfilment (0.72) had eigenvalues >1 in the Life Satisfaction Index-Z EFA, good Cronbach’s alpha reliability values. In the EFA of Katz ADL, single items with factor loadings ≥0.5: bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, and feeding; loadings <0.3: Continence; Cronbach’s alpha reliability value was 0.95. LSNS, SPS, Katz ADL, and LSI were valid and reliable instruments measuring elderly well-being, social support, and independence. Confirmatory factor analyses will revalidate it in different populations.

Abstract

Offering food products at lower prices approaching the expiration date, referred to as suboptimal food products, is considered to be able to encourage purchasing considerations by the public. It is based on knowledge of purchasing price-reduced food products by the public and the potential waste in the community focused. The study aimed to contribute to the evaluation of whether offering suboptimal foods at a lower price will reduce food waste in the supply chain. This study analyzes public knowledge, attitudes, and behavior toward suboptimal product price offers in retail stores. The research was conducted in three retail stores in Depok City by exploring research questions involving 274 retail store customers who were analyzed based on a questionnaire. The approach used is a quantitative approach with multiple linear analysis methods using SPSS software. The findings show that public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors influence suboptimal product price offers in retail stores. This research is expected to be an effective solution to overcome excess food, which leads to food waste at the retail level in sustainable food management.
