Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV infections are significant health issues in Makassar City, where their prevalence is increasing and having a substantial impact on individuals' physical and mental health. Poor mental health among TB Paru-HIV patients can exacerbate their physical conditions and hinder the healing process. This study aims to explore the protective factors that contribute to the mental health of patients. The research employs a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions involving 10 participants. The study was conducted at several hospitals and community health centers in Makassar that provide services for TB Paru-HIV patients, reaching a diverse range of individuals with varying educational and occupational backgrounds. The findings indicate that social support from family and the community serves as an essential emotional safety net, helping patients cope with stigma and anxiety. Access to quality healthcare enhances patients' self-confidence and hope, while involvement in community activities provides a sense of purpose and belonging. Knowledge about the diseases also facilitates understanding and management of their conditions. These findings emphasize the importance of integrating mental health programs into TB Paru-HIV care and the need for community-based interventions to improve patients' psychological well-being. This research provides valuable insights for developing more effective strategies to support the mental health of TB Paru-HIV patients in Makassar.

Abstract

Early adulthood is when people start thinking more about health because they’re becoming more vulnerable to chronic diseases and mental health issues. With the increasing availability of health information, some individuals tend to believe the circulating information and assume they have health problems, which leads to health anxiety. Mindfulness, however, is one approach that can reduce the level of health anxiety in early adults since it helps lower distress and negative feelings. This study focuses on trait mindfulness, which reflects the level of mindfulness in a person’s daily life. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between mindfulness and health anxiety in early adulthood. This research used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants were early adults aged 18–25 years living in Jabodetabek, with a total of 202 participants collected through convenience sampling. The instruments used were the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ) and the Short Health Anxiety Inventory (SHAI). Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation. The results showed a negative correlation between mindfulness and health anxiety, meaning that higher mindfulness is linked to lower health anxiety, and vice versa. Keywords: mindfulness, health anxiety, early adulthood

Abstract

The increasing intensity of smartphone use among college students has the potential to affect academic workload and trigger maladaptive behavior. This study aims to analyze the role of academic procrastination as a mediator in the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic stress. This study used quantitative methods with a correlational design. The participants in this study consisted of 264 college students in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. The instruments used in this study included the Academic Stress Scale, the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), and the Academic Procrastination Scale (APS). Data were analyzed using simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, and mediation analysis. The main findings indicate that smartphone addiction is significantly associated with academic stress, both directly (Direct = 0.307, 95% CI [0.179, 0.431], p < 0.001) and indirectly (Indirect = 0.224, 95% CI [0.144, 0.315], p < 0.001) through academic procrastination (Total = 0.531, 95% CI [0.415, 0.665], p < 0.001). This means that academic procrastination partially mediates the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic stress. This study highlights that increased smartphone addiction tends to elevate academic procrastination, which in turn leads to academic stress.

Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a life stage marked by intense social exploration and identity development. However, single individuals in this phase may face psychosocial challenges, particularly related to loneliness. This study aimed to examine the relationship between phubbing behavior and loneliness among single emerging adults, and whether self-esteem moderates this relationship. Using convenience sampling, a total of 218 single emerging adults aged 17–29 years (M = 21.71, SD = 2.05) participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP), UCLA Loneliness Scale version 3, and the Single-Item Self-Esteem Scale (SISE). Data was analyzed using moderation regression via the MedMod module in Jamovi. Results showed a significant positive relationship between phubbing and loneliness. Self-esteem did not directly predict loneliness, but its interaction with phubbing was significant, indicating a moderation effect. Simple slope analysis revealed that the association between phubbing and loneliness was stronger among individuals with higher self-esteem. These findings challenge the notion that self-esteem always serves as a psychological buffer. Instead, high self-esteem may amplify the emotional consequences of digital disengagement behaviors such as phubbing. This study expands the understanding of the psychological dynamics of digital social behaviors and their impact on mental well-being among single emerging adults.

Abstract

Parental divorce often has profound psychological effects on children, one of which is loneliness. In some cases, loneliness has been shown to be one of the factors associated with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). NSSI is commonly performed to regulate emotional state (intrapersonal function) or to influence others (interpersonal function), and the prevalence is high among emerging adults. They are in a transitional crisis phase between adolescence and adulthood, facing challenges such as romantic relationships, educational and career choices, and becoming independent from their parents. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the role of loneliness in non-suicidal self-injury among emerging adults with divorced parents. This is a quantitative study using the Inventory of Statements About Self-injury (ISAS) questionnaire to measure NSSI behavior and functioning, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 to measure loneliness levels. Participants were selected using purposive sampling, totaling 56 emerging adults (M = 22.2 y.o, SD = 2.4) from divorced families who had engaged in self-injury. Based on the results of simple linear regression analysis, loneliness significantly contributed to NSSI in terms of intrapersonal functioning, accounting for 16.8% (F (1,54) = 10.91, p < .05, R2 = .168). However, loneliness did not significantly influence NSSI in terms of interpersonal functioning (F (1,54) = 1.631, p = .207). Therefore, supportive social resources from family members and peers, as well as counselling programs, may be recommended to prevent NSSI among emerging adults from divorced families.
