Abstract

This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties of physical and psychological violence victimization (PPVV) scales in adolescent dating. The PPVV scale consists of 37 items (17 items of physical violence and 20 items of psychological violence), with a 4-point Likert rating scale. A total of 682 students met the inclusion criteria as respondents (88.56% female, 11.44% male). Respondents are in the age range of 15-24 years and from the first year of college to the fourth year. The results showed that two items did not fit statistically, and six were biased toward the respondent’s attributes. The average difficulty level of the item is higher than the respondent’s ability level. The PPVV instrument developed shows unidimensionality. Meanwhile, the four rating scales used have not shown satisfactory performance. They need to be simplified into three scales. However, analysis of the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch model shows that the PPVV scale has a good factor structure and psychometric properties as a measuring tool. So, the PPVV instrument can be used by future researchers by eliminating PhyV11 and PhyV16 and using a three-level rating scale.

Abstract

Scientific creativity and scientific attitude are important things that must be passed on in science learning. That is because the level of scientific creativity and scientific attitude could influence the performance in learning. As the same crucial components in learning, this research aimed to study the relationship between the level of scientific creativity and scientific attitudes. This study involved 92 prospective chemistry teachers in Pekanbaru, Indonesia who were selected using sample-simple random sampling. The data was collected through a chemistry scientific creativity test (CSCT) in form of open-ended questions, and a scientific attitude questionnaire. The data further was analyzed using SPSS 26.0 with a calculation of spearman correlation. The result showed that there was no relationship between the level of scientific creativity and scientific attitudes with Sig. 2-tailed=0.193, rs=0.137. It indicated that the level of scientific attitude was not the dominant factor that could influence the level of scientific creativity among prospective chemistry teachers in this study. Thus, this finding could be a consideration for educational stakeholders to explore the dominant factor that affected scientific creativity.

Abstract

The selection of learning media in accordance with the subject will greatly affect the interest and response of students in attending learning. In addition, during the COVID-19 pandemic, learning is conducted online, many students are not serious and are not interested in attending learning. Therefore, it is necessary to have media or online lecture platforms that can attract students’ attention, so that students can follow and be interested in learning. The purpose of this study was to look into the impact of Moodle on the research methodology performances of college students in Indonesia. Its goal was to investigate college students’ reactions to Moodle as an innovative online platform. This study included 86 Indonesian college students who sat in a single intact group. Based on the quantitative data, the study used a quasi-experimental design and a one-group pretest-posttest design. A test and a questionnaire were used to collect data. According to the study’s findings, Moodle improved Indonesian students’ research methodology performance. Students were excited to use Moodle because of its simplicity, usefulness, and accessibility. Moodle’s effectiveness in other contexts should be investigated in future research. This study confirmed Moodle's dependability in broader contexts.

Abstract

Difficulty in understanding problem solving is due to the absence of critical thinking. Students lack knowledge in assessing critical thinking during problem solving. Hence, there is a need to study critical thinking infused through a learning strategy to enhance problem solving. Critical thinking (CThink) is a learning strategy designed which combines critical thinking and Integral Calculus. The development process of CThink combines the critical thinking process and questioning for critical thinking using the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. In the learning strategy, questions were applied based on CThink processes which consist of interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation, explanation, and self-regulation. Besides, different questioning for CThink is presented based on the critical thinking process. CThink has achieved a content validity of 94.12% with a coefficient value of 0.94, and the value is above 70% or 0.70. Based on the result, the contents in the CThink are considered of good validity. From the calculation of the percentage from the expert given score, CThink has achieved the validity measurement for the language of 97.50% with a coefficient value of validity is 0.975, which is above 70 or 0.70. Based on the result, the activities and syllabus used in CThink achieved good validity measurements. The experts concluded that this CThink meets the content of Integral Calculus, in line with the level of polytechnic students, allowing students to think critically to solve problems as well as activities in CThink help to enhance student problem solving.

Abstract

Bullying is one of the major issues worldwide and is one of the most prevalent school violence. Bullying is a negative behavior toward an individual or group of individuals that are considered weak. Bullying is often associated with self-esteem. Therefore, this study was conducted to identify the influence of students’ tendency to be bullies (physical, verbal, anti-social, and cyber) on self-esteem. This study involved 150 secondary school students in the north of peninsular Malaysia. The study also used the cross-sectional survey method by distributing a set of questionnaires to the respondents. The findings of the study found that students who tend to be bullies for the four categories of bullying, namely physical bullying (ß=0.076, t=3.048, p<0.05), verbal (ß=0.080, t=3.052, p<0.05), anti-social (ß=0.084, t=3.055, p <0.05) and cyber (ß=0.046, t=2.815, p<0.05) had a significant influence on level of self-esteem.

Abstract

Evaluation in secondary schools has been left in the hands of school management, administrators, and teachers. Little or no attention has been paid to the concerns of students, who happens to be another important stakeholder in the teaching-learning process. Students’ voices regarding teachers’ classroom practice can have great implications for teaching and learning. This study investigated students’ ratings of secondary schools’ physics teachers with particular reference to teachers’ use of instructional material(s), methods, and classroom management. This study adopted the descriptive survey design, which involved 1,256 physics students randomly selected from the three senatorial districts in Ondo, Nigeria. A researcher-designed questionnaire was used to collect data for this research and the data obtained were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings from this study revealed that physics teachers were rated low in their use of instructional materials and instructional methods. However, physics teachers were rated high in the area of classroom management. This study concluded that the use of good instructional materials and methods while still adopting the best classroom management is crucial to the realization of classroom objectives. The paper contributes to the scholarship on how students’ views of their teachers can have great implications for teaching and learning.

Abstract

Due to the rapid development and dynamics of education, parents are becoming increasingly focused and concerned about their children’s education. Parents have a significant influence on students’ academic performance (AP) based on various perspectives, one of which is socio-economic status (SES). A systematic literature review is required to provide an overview for educators and policy makers in Indonesia to address problems that arise in students’ AP due to SES factors. However, there are limited research studies that systematically review the literature on SES in regards to students’ AP. This study was guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) review protocol employing two databases: Scopus and Google Scholar, regarding students’ SES and student AP. There were 316 articles were screened and 51 articles that met the predetermined criteria were obtained. This study performed content analysis to codify, organize categories, and develop themes. Based on the thematic analysis, this study grouped three main themes: SES based on student roles, SES based on teacher roles, and SES based on family roles. This review contributes to the existing literature by providing direction for further research and as a catalyst for developing new literacy related to SES in education.

Abstract

Securing universal access to affordable electricity by 2030 is one of the sustainable development goals. Meanwhile, energy consumption efficiency has a vital role in determining the achievement of this goal. Therefore, exploring behavior toward energy is crucial. Energy behavior is often characterized as individual actions that influence energy consumption and understanding of its production. On the other hand, the perspective of the young Indonesian generation is interesting to explore as their country is well-known as a fossil energy producer. In this study, the participants were 475 junior high school students in the ninth grade from four public schools in Indonesia. The questionnaire has 39 items that explore students’ perspectives on their behavior toward energy. The result shows that students’ energy behavior is mainly at a moderate level with no significant difference by gender. Students with experience in informal energy education showed higher energy behavior. The result suggests the urgency of a better quality of energy education, both formal and informal, that supports reinforcement in energy behavior.

Abstract

The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) requires the workforce to be equipped with new skills when existing skills need to be upgraded or improved because they are no longer in line with technological advancement in 4IR. Thus, it is crucial to determine what the new skills or 4IR skills are that can help the future workforce obtain a job after graduation. This study aimed to explore and verify the attributes of nine 4IR generic skills (GS4IR) for entry-level civil engineers in Malaysia by using a qualitative approach. An interview session was conducted with five senior engineers in the civil engineering (CE) field and three experts (two engineers in CE and one lecturer in CE faculty) for reliability data verification. The interview data were analyzed using coding analysis and presented in a matrix table. The results show 76 items identified as attributes of nine GS4IR constructs. Next, the verification of the constructs and attributes of GS4IR was obtained from Fleiss Kappa's reliability analysis to determine the overall approval index. The results of the analysis revealed an overall Kappa coefficient value of 0.61, which indicates a good level of agreement. The findings of this study consist of 58 attributes for nine constructs of GS4IR approved after the inter-rater reliability among the experts. The findings from this study are beneficial for the development of a framework of 4IR generic skills for civil engineering graduates as guidance to instill new skills in producing future engineers.

Abstract

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a complex problem-solving that depends on the deep structures of domain-specific prior knowledge (DSPK) in mathematics. However, there is a lack of mathematics DSPK tests measuring several mathematics topics in every problem-solving phase in conceptual and procedural knowledge. This study aims to develop a mathematical problem-solving test as a mathematics DSPK test and investigate the content and construct validity. The product of test development is a 30-multiple-choice-item test in six mathematics topics. Every topic underlined all problem-solving phases in conceptual and procedural knowledge in a science or individual context. There were six experts performed the content validity sheets which analyzed using the content validity index (CVI) and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The construct validity was examined using the Rasch model from 175 data of 7th grader students in Indonesia (Mage=12.66, SD=55). The result of content validity revealed overall items were valid (CVI≥83) and reliable (α=863; rxx=513). The construct of all items indicated fit (90≤weigheted MNSQ≤1.16) and were reliable (α=74) with various levels of difficulties and six low discrimination items. The recommendation for improvement is emphasized in language aspects. The absence of knowledge of facts could be an improvement for further study.
