Abstract

Gamification carries the element of fun and creativity into classroom teaching. It is not an unusual fact that playing games varied among learners and created an effective classroom environment. In the 21st-century teaching era, learners’ fun and creative learning environment are prioritized. Lessons filled with fun games are believed to produce a positive outcome during a lesson. Therefore, gamification prepares learners to be active and take responsibility for their learning. This study aimed to explore learners’ comprehension of the term ‘gamification’ and the effects of gamified elements implemented in the lesson on the targeted learners. A set of questionnaires was administered through an online survey to 100 respondents from local primary schools around Selangor who took part in a service-learning programmed. The data was then analyzed and presented in the form of tables. Results showed that respondents had prior knowledge of the term ‘gamification’ and the game culture’s overall context. The respondents agreed that their respective teachers had implemented several game elements when conducting a gamified lesson. Results also indicated that respondents were in preference to learn using gamified learning activities that helped them learn subconsciously.

Abstract

This study examined the current practices, difficulties and impacts of English as second official language (ESOL) teaching and learning in secondary schools in Cameroon. It investigated the perceptions and attitudes of students, teachers and parents towards the teaching and learning of ESOL, including prevailing teaching and learning practices. This study stemmed from the observation that the exit profile of most students in technical secondary schools does not correspond to the official exit profile set out by the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC). It was therefore necessary to survey students, parents, and teachers with the goal of identifying areas of concern and proposing remedial solutions. Responses of these key stakeholders selected in four education institutions (including two technical high schools and two general high schools) to questionnaires have provided data for the study. Such responses offered insights into the current situation in Cameroon’s ESOL, as well as into the possible utility of, and desire for, the development of ESOL courses aimed at students learning in technical schools. The inclusion and development of English for specific purposes (ESP) in Cameroon’s ESOL teaching and learning could help bring education stakeholders and policymakers closer to what they want to see from the country’s ESOL program.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness and level of distance-teaching services provided to students with autism spectrum disorder in the United Arab Emirates, Emirate of Abu Dhabi (from a viewpoint of the teachers and parents). To achieve the study goals, the distance education services assessment tool was built in two forms. The data collection for this study was done by distributing online questionnaires to all participants. The results of the study indicated an assessment of distance-teaching services in a high level from the teachers' viewpoint with a total average (4.16 of 5), and the parent's viewpoint indicated their assessment of these services in a high level with a total average (4.18 of 5). The study suggested for future researchers to conduct more studiestargeting the challenges and difficulties during the distance-teaching for parents and teachers of students, include or limit other programs to assess the distance-teaching among parents and teachers of autism spectrum disorder students of severe degree.

Abstract

Accountant educators are among those who are blamed for scandals in practice because the journey of ethical learning is believed to begin in the college. Therefore, this study investigated the perceptions of accountant educators about the ethical environment in colleges and plagiarism behavior. More specifically, this study compared the perceptions of accountant educators in: i) State and private universities; ii) A-accredited universities and B-accredited universities, and examined the relationship between ethical environment and plagiarism. Comparative analysis (t test and one-way ANOVA) and regression analysis methods are used for data analysis. Based on the responses of 147 accountant educators, it was found that accountant educators who work at state universities and at A-accredited universities perceive an ethical environment significantly stronger than accountant educators who work at private universities and at B-accredited universities. Average of the respondents perceived plagiarism behavior as unethical. There were differences in the perception of the ethical environment in terms of gender and academic position, and there were significant differences in plagiarism behavior in terms of type and institutional accreditation, working period, and academic position. The findings also showed that the perception of the ethical environment has a negative effect on plagiarism behavior.

Abstract

Mentally retarded is a mental disorder with an intelligence quotient (IQ) between 55-70, besides those mentally retarded children are only able to think concretely. For this reason, learning mathematics for mentally retarded students requires learning media that can bridge abstract mathematical material with the abilities of mentally retarded children who are only able to think concretely. The objective of this study was to improve the recognition of 1-20 numbers using number cards for students with mild mental retardation. The research used is single subject research method with basic design non reversal. Study subjects were selected based on a purposive sampling technique, as the researcher had to look for subjects with mild mental retardation. Data collection techniques use documentation to find out subjects with mild mental retardation characteristics, and tests to determine the subject's ability to recognize numbers 1-20. The results of this study indicate that the number card media can improve the ability of mild mentally retarded students to recognize numbers 1-20. This can be seen from the average in the baseline phase of 39 with a percentage of the ability to recognize numbers of 33.3%, and in the intervention phase of 74.44 with a percentage of the ability to recognize numbers of 88.89%.

Abstract

At present, there are several literature reviews on teachers’ assessment literacy (AL). However, little attention has been paid to a systematic analysis of AL measures. The review on AL measures helps to evaluate the available tools and provide recommendations for developing AL measures in further exploration. Hence, the purpose of the current literature review is to focus on analyzing the measures of teachers’ AL proficiency from 1991 to 2020. Across the contexts, 28 quantitative tools made up of questionnaires or tests were collected. Among them, 10 were designed to investigate overall AL proficiency and 18 were constructed to examine the sub-categories of AL proficiency among teachers. Each instrument was analyzed from the format, guiding framework, item characteristics, targeting population, and psychometric quality. Results showed that the current AL measures were derived more from instrumental than social-cultural conceptualization, examined more on sub-categories than the overall proficiency level, targeted more at in-service teachers than pre-service teachers, and focused more on elementary and middle education than pre- or higher education. Further studies are welcomed from four aspects: construct social-culturally, test generalizability, target at specific groups, and cover various types of AL.

Abstract

This research paper focuses on the effects of the parent autonomy factor that supports the needs of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) learning and builds the interest of students in STEM careers. This was a quantitative research study that employed the parent authority questionnaire (PAQ). Based on the research objective, the questions in the PAQ were altered to evaluate the effects of parents on student interest in STEM careers and adapted to the purpose of the study. The PAQ comprises a scale of 1-10 ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Research respondents included 419 upper secondary students from national schools in Malaysia, and the research used a proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The research determined parents’ autonomy towards the development of students’ STEM career interest and the data was analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The results found that the autonomy of parents significantly affected upper secondary students in the development of STEM careers of students. The research question was answered by proving that the autonomy of parents is directly significant (p<001). Results showed that parents explicitly offer meaningful impacts and valuable values to motivate students of the science stream at the secondary level to ensure that their STEM career interests are well nurtured. The findings from this research provide useful insight into the learners, and lead to the value of autonomy of parents in promoting a curriculum design that suits the needs of students in the future.
