Abstract

Previous studies found that academic motivation has a role in affecting academic performance. Along with that, the experts lately investigate mindfulness as one of the cognitive aspects related to student’s performance. This study aimed to find out the correlations among mindfulness, academic motivation, and academic performance in the context of English as a foreign language (EFL) student in Indonesia. Using a quantitative correlation design, this study involved 170 students from English education study program in a university in Indonesia. Five Facets Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), and grade point average (GPA) official data were used as data collection instruments. Furthermore, to measure the correlation and contribution between the variables, Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient and regression analyses were conducted. The result of this study showed that most students had low mindfulness scale, high AMS with a dominant extrinsic motivation type, and very satisfactory GPA. However, there was no correlation among mindfulness, academic motivation, and academic performance. Moreover, it was found that only amotivation subscale has negative significant correlation with academic performance.

Abstract

The quality of communication is directly related to patient satisfaction and can influence health outcomes. However, most doctors still have poor communication skills. A systematic literature search in PubMed, Cochrane, and Science Direct was conducted to retrieve studies reporting the use of peer role-play (PRP) for doctor-patient communication skills training in medical students. The quality of each study was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist. A total of 1,620 studies were obtained from electronic database search and screening of reference lists. After removing irrelevant studies and duplicates, one randomized control trial (RCT) and eight quasi-experimental studies were included in this systematic review. Peer role-play was perceived to be as useful as simulated patients (SP) training methods with comparable post-intervention objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) scores. Majority of students preferred PRP for learning communication skills over didactic lectures. The limitation of this review is the scarcity of eligible studies, high variability in the PRP programs across studies, and the lack of grey literature included. Peer role-play might be a cost-effective method to improve doctor-patient communication skills with comparable results (student’s perception and OSCE scores) with the expensive use of simulated patients. However, further study is needed to support this statement.

Abstract

This paper describes a study with the goal of exposing children to gamification activities in teaching and learning numeracy based on the lexical method by implementing a trajectory image (image representator). Early childhood learning difficulties in understanding abstract and symbolic numerical concepts and procedures have been identified as an issue that needs to be addressed and acted as a starting point in the effort to shape the transformation of early childhood mathematics both in teaching and learning. Therefore, this study would like to inspect the role played by language as the medium used in translating the concept of numeracy whether it is applied contextually or in a variety of contexts. The respondents selected for this study were 10 teachers and 50 preschool children and a numeracy module instrument based on the numeracy comprehension level model framework (MPKN) was chosen and applied to students by using lexical and image methods called trajectory image or image representator. Findings have shown that the understanding of preschool children related to previous aspects of numeracy is still at level 1 and level 2. It clearly stated that children are still unable to grasp the concept of numeracy in detail. This study has introduced the MPKN and LexsMath gamification products that have successfully provided a clear understanding to children regarding the in-depth understanding of numeracy aspects from level 1 to level 4 and also have shed some light on more effective teaching methods that can be employed in the aspect of numeracy teaching and learning.

Abstract

Discussion related to nationalism has become an essential topic in the field of Indonesian education, particularly in the context of education in the border area. This study reported on the condition of educational services, and explored the meaning and experience of nationalism from Indonesian migrant workers' (IMW's) children at the community learning center (CLC) Sarawak, Indonesia-Malaysia border area. The study employed qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach, intended to produce in-depth data on the meaning and experience of nationalism from IMW's children attending CLC Sarawak, Malaysia. The data collected in this study used the main data through exhaustive interviews and observation, while additional data was collected through documentation. The results showed that CLC has made the optimal efforts in growing IMW's children nationalism in border areas, included: i) Implementing educational curriculum in accordance with curriculum standards in Indonesia; ii) Implement programs that can increase IMW's children nationalism; and iii) Improve access and quality education services for IMW's children in border areas. Furthermore, IMW's children interpret nationalism as a feeling of love, pride, and willingness to sacrifice for the nation and country with all their heart. The meaning of nationalism is constructed through various children’s experiences obtained in the school environment, family environment, and socio-cultural conditions in the community. The results and discussions reported in this study can serve as a reference and guideline for the Indonesian government to formulate and prioritize educational designs or policies for Indonesian migrant workers in border areas.

Abstract

A consultation is an act of discussing a certain issue between two or more parties. Consultation is considered very important especially in the context of higher education. The Novel Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has shifted the education paradigm into digital dependency, including consultation management between students and academicians. However, a lack of studies has been conducted on the roles of self-efficacy towards user behavioral intention to use online consultation management systems in the aftermath of a pandemic. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy and user behavioral intention to use an online consultation management system. In terms of respondents, 270 students were selected based on convenience sampling. Findings were analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 26 and SmartPLS version 3.2.8. Hence, this research revealed that proposed hypotheses were all supported. Self-efficacy has a positive and significant relationship with perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. On the other hand, both perceived usefulness and ease of use were found positively influence attitude towards using online consultation management system.

Abstract

Studying physics and many related disciplines at all education levels includes not only learning the theoretical material, but also the formation of skills and abilities to apply the knowledge gained in practice. This occurs mainly during laboratory work when students directly contact with specific laboratory equipment. With the forced transition to distance learning due to the development of the COVID-19 pandemic, the main difficulties in many universities arose precisely during the implementation of laboratory workshops. This study analyzed the possibilities of modern digital teaching aids for the effective remote implementation of a laboratory workshop in physics and related disciplines. The study was carried out on the basis of the Elabuga Institute of the Kazan Federal University. There were 79 students took part in the experiment (second and third-year students). The results showed that a well-arranged combination of various digital tools and technologies makes it possible to effectively implement laboratory works in physics and electrotechnical disciplines in a distance learning format. The research results are useful for university teachers using distance learning technologies in laboratory work in natural science disciplines.
