Abstract

Reading is a multileveled and interactive process in which readers contruct a meaningful representation of text using their schemata. While it has been known for some time that both content and formal schemata are necessary for complete understanding of written texts in a reader’s first language (L1), and has been suspected to be true in the reader’s second language (L2). The purpose of this thesis is twofold. The first, to give a brief overview of some of the literature that deals with scanning as the alternative technique to teach reading comprehension. The second goal, to disscuss the implemetation of scaaning in the reading class. This classroom action research was intended to comprehend students’ reading in scanning recount text at SMPN 1 Glagah in the 2013/2014 academic year. It was conducted at the eighth year students. The respondent oh this research was consisted of 54 students who cocsisted of each class of the eighth grade. This respondents were chosen becouse they were as example of sample to establish the technique had goal or not. Involving the English teacher's preparation, the instructional activities conducted by the teachers, the material or technique used in the teaching of reading comprehension, the evaluation reading comprehension, and other factors that students succeed in the reading comprehension. The instruments of collecting data used test and documentation. The reading comprehension focused in recount text which used scanning technique. The reading comprehension test was used to get primary data about the students’ reading comprehension of English passages. In the implementation to find the value of reading comprehension by scanning techinique for the first time was providing related question reading test of recount text. It was done to determine the value students reading comprehension by using that technique mentioned above. So that, it will be known later on how to comprehend reading text. In the evaluation, the researcher got the test score from the respondent or students. Based on the result, it be concluded that the reading comprehension by scaanning technique had side-effect to improve the reading ability students and help the students of the eighth grade at SMPN 1 Glagah who they got some reading test which focused in recount text.

Abstract

Writing cannot be separated from sentences. Constructing sentences is astart to write a composition since it has levels of difficulties starting from wordsto sentences, sentences to paragraph and paragraph to longer composition.Jumbled words is a method of teaching. There are some words or sentenceswhich are jumbled by teacher and the students must arrange them intocorrect sentences. This research is a descriptive quantitative one that focusedon the data analysis with form description with the scoring of the eight gradestudents’ grammatical errors in arranging jumbled words into meaningfulsentences at SMP Negeri 4Banyuwangi in the Academic Year 2016/2017. Purposive method was used todetermine the research area. The number of respondent were 30 students.The result of the data analysis showed that compose sentences was difficultfor the eight year students of SMP Negeri 4 Banyuwangi. (1) There are 126miordering of using adjective followed by noun with the percentage 23,37%.(2) There are 46 misordering of using verb followed byadverb with the percentage 8,53%. (3) There are 98 misordering of usingauxiliary verb ( do, do es and did )with the percentage 18,18%, (4) There are 95 misordering of using to be pasttense (was and were) with the percentage 17,62%. (5) There are75misordering of using Simple Present Tense with the percentage 13,91%. (6)There are 99 misordering of using Simple Past Tense with the percentage18,36%

Abstract

In this research, the researcher wanted to describe about the students’reading comprehension achievement. This research design was applied ondescriptive quantitative research. The respondent was the seventh classstudents at SMP Sunan Giri CLuring in 2013/2014 Academic Year. The totalrespondent was 22 students from one class determined through population. The primary data was a reading comprehension test as an achievement testin the form of multiple choices. The result was analyzed statistically inpercentage then descriptively which presented the students’ scores for theirachievement in Literal Reading Comprehension, and Inferential ReadingComprehension. The secondary data was taken from the documentationand interview. The results of the research showed that the seventh class students’ achievement in reading comprehension is good (73,4%). The details are good(75,4%) for Literal Reading comprehension. And was fair (67,2%) for InferentialReading comprehension. The students get the lowest achievement for Inferential ReadingComprehension and the highest achievement for Literal ReadingComprehension. The students need to improve their vocabulary in order tomake them easier in reading comprehension especially for InferentialReading Comprehension.

Abstract

The research is an analysis the poem structure of William Ernest Henley Invictus. The purpose of this research is to understand the structure that used in thepoem of William Ernest Henley Invictus. The data were taken fromdocumentation of Invictus poem and biographical of the poet. Theresearcher used objective approach as data analysis method. The structureof poetry is consisting of two structures, namely; physical structure and innerstructure. The physical structure is consisting of six sections, they are diction,imagery, concrete word, figurative language, version and typography. While, the inner structure is divide on four proportion they are theme, tone, feelingand mandate. To make a good poetry the poet should pay attention in theelements of poetry, especially the structure of poetry.

Abstract

This research is conducted to identify the idiom and its types in JoanneKathleen Rowling’s novel entitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone as wellas strategies used to translate them in the translation versionThe data of this descriptive qualitative research are idiomatic expressionsfound in the novel and its translation in Indonesian language. Documentationis used to collect the data. The data of this research are phrases or sentencesthat contain idiomatic expressions. Meanwhile, content analysis method isapplied for analyzing data in relation to their contexts. The result of this research shows that 140 idioms in 13 types were found in theEnglish novel from chapter 15 to chapter 17. Those thirteen types are phrasalverb (61.43%), prepositional phrase (13.57%), semi-opaque idiom (7.86%), noun phrase (5%), clause idiom (4.29%), idiom of comparison (2.86%), miscellaneous (1.43%), proverb (0.71%), adverb phrase (0.71%), adjectivephrase (0.71%), idiomatic pairs (0.71%), and simile (0.71%). Furthermore, there are three translation strategies used by the translator. Theyare translation using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, paraphrase, and omission. The researcher found that paraphrase is thehighest number with 134 idioms (95.7%). The second strategy is translation byusing an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form with 5 idioms (3.59%). Theless strategy used by the translator is translation by omission with only oneidiom (0.71%). It can be concluded that paraphrase is the most preferredstrategy used by the translator. It was used because she wants to deliver themessage of the text as natural as possible by using the most equivalentmeaning of the idiom in Indonesian

Abstract

This classroom action research discussed certai ways to solve studentsdifficulties in composing recount, and the researcher would like to developthe technique of learning composing recount through guided picture, andthe problem of this research is: How can the students’ ability in writing recounttext through guided picture of X DKV 2 Semester 1 at SMKN 1 Banyuwangi inthe 2017/2018 Academic Year be improved?. This classroom action researchapplied the strategy in order to improve the students’ ability in writingcomposition of recount text, and the strategy which is used in teachingwriting composition is the use of guided picture as the media.. The use of guided pictures as media in teaching writing composition ofrecount can improve the students’ ability of class X DKV 2 SMKN 1Banyuwangi. It can be seen in the result of cycle I and cycle II. Frompreliminary test, the students writing composition of recount score rangedfrom 55 to 68, there were 24 students. It gradually improved to 37.1%, it meansthat the score range in cycle 1 was from 55 to 68 there were 11 students. Incycle 2, there were 9 students in the score range from 55 to 68. It means thatthere was 5.7% achievement. It can be concluded that the test result frompre-action, cycle 1, to cycle 2 have had improved significantly based on thecriteria of success which has been stated in previous chapter that is 75%. On the other hand, it can be concluded that the students’ motivation andinterest in learning writing composition of recount are also improved

Abstract

This research is conducted to identify the noun phrase and its types in Carlo Collodi’s novel entitled Pinoccio as well as procedures used to translate them in the translation version entitled Pinokio which was translated by Wiwin Indiarti. The data of this descriptive qualitative research are noun phrases found in the novel and their translation in Indonesian. Documentation is used to collect the data. Meanwhile, content analysis method is applied for analyzing data in relation to their contexts. The result of this research shows that there are 5.283 noun phrases in chapter 1 to chapter 36 of Pinochio novel. It is also found that there are 3 types of noun phrase. They are: 1) noun phrase type I which is identified as Modifier + Head (M+H) with 2.985 data, 2) noun phrase type II which is identified as Head + Modifier (M+H) with 425 data, and 3) noun phrase type III which is identified as Modifier + Head + Modifier (M+H) with 1.873 data. Furthermore, the translator used eleven translation procedures to translate noun phrases proposed by Newmark. Those procedures are 1) translation by Transference with frequency of 93 data (1.8%), 2) translation by Naturalization with frequancy of 102 data (2.1%), 3) translation by Cultural Equivalent with frequency of 308 data (6.2%), 4) translation by Functional Equivalent with frequancy of 97 data (1.9%) translation by Componential Analysis with frequancy of 773 data (14.7%), 6) translation by Synonymy with frequancy of 738 data (14.9%), 7) translation by Through-translation with frequancy of 1.205 data (24.3%), 8) translation by Shift or Transposition with frequancy of 792 data (17%), 9) translation by Compensation with frequancy of 438 data (8%). 10 translation by Couplets with frequency 173 (3.4%), and 11) translation by Modulation with frequency 43 (1%). It can be concluded that the translator often used Through translation procedure to translate noun phrases into Indonesian. It was used because she wants to deliver the message of the text as natural as possible

Abstract

Perception is the experience about objects, events, or the relations that are gotten by concluding the information and interpreting the mesagge. The more complex definition is given by Pareek in Alex (2003:446) who states that perception is a process of receiving, selecting, organizing, interpreting, evaluating, and giving relation to stimulate of the sense. Based on the definition above, it can be summarized that perception is a process of recognizing/receiving the stimuli in form of events, objects, or others through the sense, then those stimuli are organized and interpreted, and lastly giving reaction toward them. To achieve the research purposes, this research uses analytic induction. The researcher use theory from Walters that is self perception Self perception is based on self-efficicacy. It means that the perception occurs based on individual mind (intrinsic). Because the student’s appreciate about the foreign volunteer’s role by themselves. They will appreciate does the foreign volunteers give positive or negative impact.Learning with foreign volunteer made the seventh grade’s at SMPN 2 GlagahBanyuwangi more interested to study English and foreign volunteer give big impact to the students, so they can study hard. Based on the result, it is suggested To the teacher it is suggested to imitate the techniques applied by foreign volunteer, or the teacher can consolidate the teacher’s techniques and the foreign volunteer’s techniques. Students should be active, creative and also fun in teaching learning process and be more confident and do not afraid with English lesson. Students should pay attention to teacher explanation.While for the the other researcher, it is suggested to use the information to know the student’s perceptions about the foreign volunteer’s roles in English learning process at SMPN 2 Glagah. The other researcher are also suggested to use it as reference if having similar research

Abstract

English is international language which everyone should understand even a little. In this research, the researcher deals about translation shift especially in the bilingual children books. Indonesian is the source language while English as the target language. The objective of this research are to find out kinds of translations shift and to know how are the translation shift applied in translating two of short stories there are “Cerita Si Lebah and Cerita Si kupu-kupu”. This book very interesting, many children like to read this book, because this book makes children easy to learn English. In book Cerita Si Lebah and Si Kupu-Kupu translating Indonesian into English there are a shifting. Shift is departures from formal correspondence in the process of going from SL into the TL. There are two types Translation shift they are Level Shift and Category Shift. The method of this research uses descriptive qualitative method. The data analysis used by the researcher is content analysis. The researcher read and compares both Indonesian as the source language and English as the target language. The researcher took the entire sentence from the Indonesian text and English text, check whether there are shifts in translations which are taken the valid data. Then, analyze the types of translation shifts occurred and draw conclusion based on the analysis. The objects being analyzed are books entitle Cerita Si Lebah and Cerita Si Kupu-Kupu. The researcher takes the data from that’s book found 22 data there are 1 data is Level Shift and 21 data is category shift. Then, from Cerita si Lebah was found 9 data, they are level shift and category shift. The category shifts found are unit shift, structure shift and class shift. From Cerita Si Kupu-Kupu book found 13 data they are category shift, they are structure shift and Intra system shift. So, it can be concluded that the translation shift found in two short are mostly category shift.

Abstract

Reading is one of the language skills. There are four components of the language skills are: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Reading is one of the important skills in teaching English. In this research, the researcher is interested to discuss about a content analysis on the quality of short stories in short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust. The purpose of this research are to measure the quality of short stories in short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust, and to identify the readability and gender equality of short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. To get the data of the research, The researcher used a documentation. The researcher used flesch reading ease formula. The data sources from this research taken from book entitled short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust. In this book consist of 17 titles from 17 authors. Based on the result of the data analysis of documentation, it can be known that all of short story can be read by children from the age 8 – 11 years old. Types of reading level in this short stories are easy and very easy. From the 17 short stories, total number of short stories that tell about men life there were 12. While total number of short stories that tell about women life there were The researcher concluded that the quality of short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust is enough. The readability of short stories in short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust is easily understood by children’s and all short stories are suitable as children’s books. The gender equality in short stories for children’s published by children’s book trust is gender bias. The short stories only focus on one gender. The suggestion are for the readers, the researcher suggest that the readers can selecting to choose short stories which is most suitable to reading. The reader can also apply the result of this study as feedback on their reading activities, improve their knowledge and experience in choosing appropriate book, so that the reader is better in reading skill. For the other researchers, it would be useful for the other researcher to use the result as additional reference for those who want to conduct research. The researcher suggest that the other researchers can add research on the short story
