Abstract

The objective of the research is to know the type of lexical relations in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and the most dominant of lexical relation found in the same work. To achieve the objectives, the researcher employs descriptive qualitative method by collecting the randomly sentences of the novel chosen. After collecting and selecting the data, the researcher starts to analyze the words in the sentences by using the theory of lexical relation related to Semantics. The results show that in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland there were 65 utterances of lexical relations. They are 17 utterances of synonyms, 13 utterances of homonym, 5 utterances of hyponyms and 30 utterances of antonyms. It is 17 words of synonyms, 13 words of homonym, 5 words of hyponyms and 34 words of antonyms. By having adequate knowledge on lexical relations, any readers can easily understood the words usage. Furthermore, the researcher finds antonym as the most dominant type, whereas hyponym is the lexical relation type with the least case.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the foremost important components in learning language. Word mapping strategy is depiciting of changing relationship between and among words to encourage students studying English. The researcher used experimental method. The research was conducted at SMK PGRI Banyuputih from 10stAugust until 15thAugust 2018, in the academic year 2018/2019. The population of the research was tenth grade students at SMK PGRI Banyuputih. The samples were class X AK as the experimental class and class X TKJ as the control class. Both of them were consisted of 15 students. This research used quantitative approach with experiment design. The technique of collecting data used was a test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. Based on the result of the data analysis of T-test formula, it can be known the result of t-test was higher than the t table. That was 2,89 > 2,048. it show that there is an effect of word mapping strategy on the vocabulary mastery of the tenth grade students at SMK PGRI Banyuputih in academic year 2018/2019.

Abstract

The objective of the research was to know the effect of Spelling Bee game to students vocabulary mastery. This research design was in experimental research. The researcher observed 33 students’ of tenth grade TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mamba’ul Huda. The researcher used pre-test and post-test and those were in the form of multiple choice tests. The data were analyzed statistically by using T-test. Afterward, T-test was analyzed and interpreted with the degree of significances 5% with db = N – 1 = 33-1 = 32 and the T- table is 2,036. The results of T-test analysis was 12,09. The result showed that there was a significant difference between using and without spelling bee game to students vocabulary mastery. Based on the research result, it can be concluded that teaching English vocabulary by Spelling Bee game was effective and gave remarkable progress in students vocabulary mastery, especially in X TKJ 2 at SMK NU Mambaba’ul Huda Tegalsari.

Abstract

The objective of the research is to know whether the students taught by using WhatsApp group get better descriptive text writing score. The research design of this research was pre-experimental research. The respondents of this research were the tenth grade students of TKJ class at SMK Al-Achyar, consisting of 19 students. Abstract

This research aims to 1) categorize cultural terms with the theory of translation and culture, 2) analyze translation strategies with the theory of translation strategies and their roles and 3) assess the level of accuracy in translation of cultural terms. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The data in this research are 149 cultural terms, 44 data in the form of words and 105 data in the form of phrases. Data are obtained by documentation, questionnaires and in-depth interview. The results of the research found 19 data of arts, 4 data of clotings, 21 data of culture materials, 52 data of ecology, 39 data of socio-culture and 14 data of society. The translation strategy applied in translating cultural terms are 48 pure borrowing, 15 subtraction, 13 synonym, 6 transposition, structural addition and cultural equivalent respectively 5 data, 1 semantic addition and 1 descriptive equivalent. It is also found the using of couplet strategy, pure borrowing+transposition 40 data, transposition+structural addition 5 data, transposition+semantic addition 5 data, pure borrowing+structural addition and synonym+structural addition 2 data each and pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent 1 data. The role of the translation strategy in producing accurate translations, pure borrowing strategy gave very positive impact on the accuracy of the translation. Meanwhile the less accuracies and inaccuracies occured in translation caused by the using of subtraction strategies, inappropriate synonym strategies, and semantic-addition strategy. The translation accuracy of cultural terms in the Visitor's Guide Book: Majestic Banyuwangi is qualified high level of text accuracy. The accurate translations are 133 data (89,26%), less accurate translations are 14 data (9,4%) and 2 data (1,34%) are inaccurate translations. It can be concluded that the translation resulted is accurate based on the using of translation strategies. They are pure borrowing, structural addition, transposition+structural addition, pure borrowing+structural addition, synonym+structural addition, descriptive equivalent, pure borrowing+descriptive equivalent. It means that Banyuwangi bilingual tourism publication is translated accurately by using those seven strategies.

Abstract

Nowadays, code-mixing phenomenon is commonly used in communication. In this case, people sometimes mix the language into another language in order to get understand and succesful of communication. The objectives of the study are to find out the types and the levels of code-mixing used in “My Stupid Boss part 1” movie. In this study, the researcher focuses on Indonesian, English, and Javanese utterance. This research method used a descriptive qualitative method. It described the results of research that was objectively analyzed by collecting data. The data source was script movie. The researcher used free listening method. Then, the analysis method followed the steps of Miles and Hubarman. The result was displayed on the table of code-mixing and explained with narrative text. The researcher used 58 data from the utterances in the movie that are considered is able to represent of code-mixing. Analysis focused on two types and six levels of code-mixing. There are 12 of inner code-mixing and 54 of outer code-mixing used in this movie. Then, there are 40 of word levels, 18 of phrase levels, 2 of clause levels, 1 of baster level, and 7 of repetition word level.

Abstract

Speaking is an important things in interaction, and speaking English is very important to learn to communication when people from the different nations meet. This research aimed to find the type and the dominant barriers in speaking English learning at Senior High School in Songgon Sub-district. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The respondent were 160 from three school in Songgon Sub-district, they are 69 respondent from MA Alfatah, 17 respondent from SMA 4 Muhammadiyah, and 74 respondent from SMK Nurut Taqwa which determined by using cluster sampling. The data were taken by using online system of questionnaire and interview. The data from questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. The data analysis was determined based on theory linguistics barrier and non-linguistic barriers. Analysis questionnaire and interview data showed that students at Senior high school In Songgon sub-district have high Barriers in speaking English learning. The type of barriers had by students showed the percentage score of each indicator are 66% in speaking barrier, 57% in lack of vocabulary, 65% poor in grammar, 64% poor in pronunciation, 71% in lack of motivation, 62% in fear of mistake, 61% in anxiety, 65% in lack of confidence, and 57% in shyness. The most dominant barriers had by students are poor in grammar from linguistic factor and lack of motivation from non-linguistic factor.

Abstract

This research is a comparative study of translation using descriptive qualitative approach. It aims at examining the quality (accuracy and acceptability levels) of religious terms translation of two translation works of an outstanding qualities novel written by Umberto Eco entitle The Name of the Rose. To be exact, this research airmed to: 1). Measure the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra, 2). Measure the translation accuarcy and acceptability of religious terms in The Name of the Rose published by Bentang Pustaka, and 3). Describe the differences and similarities of the translation accuracy and acceptability of religious terms published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka. The research data are religious terms found in The Name of the Rose which is collected using documentation method. The collected data are analyzed by using three following steps, 1). Comparing, 2). Describing and 3). Reporting. To assess translation accuracy and acceptability, the researcher used the translation quality assessment instruments by Prof. Mangatur Nababan. The research results that the translation accuracy and acceptability of The Name of the Rose published by Jalasutra and Bentang Pustaka are good. Both provide accurate translation of religious terms since they successfully translate 321 terms accurately. However, Bentang Pustaka translates 14 terms less accurately and 6 terms with inaccurate while Jalasutra translates 10 terms less accurately and 10 terms with inaccurate. The different quality of accuracy and acceptability was due to the translators’ different consideration between maintaining the accuracy and acceptability level or reaching high readability translation. The conclusion is that Bentang Pustaka provides better translation than Jalasutra.

Abstract

Language is primarily a speech. It is used in a society and it is a social event. People use a language for communication with each other. This research aimed to describe students’ perceptions toward code-switching used by English teacher, and the types of code-switching that used teacher in teaching-learning process. The research design was descriptive qualitative. The respondents were 36 students in SMK Negeri 1 Banyuwangi which determined by used purposive sampling. The data were taken by used documentation and questionnaire. The data from documentation used to analyze the types of code-switching. The data from questionnaire analyzed by using Likert scale. The data analysis was determined based on theory of interest with four indicators. They are effect of code-switching in rising their confidence, learning materials mastery, learning motivation, and interaction in teaching-learning process. The result of documentation show that there are three types of code switching that used by teacher in teaching-learning process. The percentage are tag code-switching (27,55%), inter sentential code-switching (43,87%), and intra sentential code-switching (28,57%). Analysis of questionnaire data showed that the index percentage of students’ perceptions toward code switching used by English teacher was 73% that consists of effect of code-switching in rising students’ confident 75%, analyzing learning materials mastery 77%, learning motivation 73%, and 69% interaction in teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Code switching and code mixing are phenomenon of bilingualism that are used in speech community. The goals of this research were to identify the types, to find out the most dominant type, and to analyze the reasons focused on code switching and code mixing found in Aku Juga Tak Sempurna episode on Perspektif Metro TV. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were classified based on Hoffman theory. Then, converting the number of types of code switching and code mixing by using Walizer formula. The analyzed method followed Mile and Huberman. The classifications of code switching occured 79 times, including: 70 data (88,6 %) of inter sentential switching, 7 data (8,8 %) of emblematic switching, and 2 data (2,5 %) of establishing continuity with the previous speaker. So the most dominant type of code switching is inter sentential switching. Moreover, the classification of code mixing occured 150 times, including: 120 data (80 %) of intra sentential mixing, 23 data (15,3 %) of intra lexical mixing, and 7 data (4,6 %) of involving a change of pronunciation. So the most dominant type of code mixing is inter sentential mixing. Then, the highest reason showed talking about a particular topic were 168 data. The intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor and expressing group identity had the same result, they reached 16 data. Showing empathy about something were 11 data. Quoting somebody else, interjection, and repetition used for clarification had the same result, they reached 6 data.
