Abstract

This research aims at examining the potential determinants of overtime risk preference in Indonesia–one of the most diverse countries in the world. We used household and individual data as well, taken from the fourth and fifth wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS). The risk aversion of the individual was observed and elicited using hypothetical gambling questions. From the result of Ordinary Least Square (OLS) estimation, we find preliminary evidence that there is a decrease in risk-aversion among individuals over time. However, there is little evidence that catastrophe will alter risk choice as a proxy for a significant life event. Furthermore, our empirical finding also revealed that risk tolerance is motivated not only by demographic factors but also by the education level and individual’s time preference.

Abstract

Escalation of commitment is a form of cognitive bias that has characteristics where decision-makers tend to increase their commitment to an unfavorable investment. This study aims to prove the demographic factors of decision-makers such as work experience and rigid thinking as determinants of escalation of commitment. This research applies a 2 x 2 factorial experimental research design with a case study as an instrument of investment decision making. The participants of this experiment were regular undergraduate students as a proxy for inexperienced decision-makers and non-regular undergraduate students (executive class) as experienced proxy for decision-makers. Participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique with the adequacy criteria for General Point Average (GPA) above 3.00 and have attended and passed the Financial Management course and Theory of Decision Making course. This research uses two-ways ANOVA with a significance level of 5%. Using total 64 respondents, the results showed that work experience and rigid thinking have a significant effect on the escalation of commitment. This study also proves that the interaction between work experience and the rigidity of the decision-making mindset does not affect the level escalation of commitment.

Abstract

Aside from identifying the determinants of transfers from children to parents in developing countries like Indonesia, this paper's primary purpose is to examine the effect of education level attainment on the amount of transfer from children to parents. We use the Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS-5) data, which covers approximately 34,000 adult individual respondents. Out of all respondents, 16,016 observations met the sample criteria of aged 15 years and older who have parents living outside the household. The result shows that 75% of children provided assistance to parents in the form of money, goods, or labor/time within a year preceding the survey. The average money transfer per year is IDR 1,030,000 (approximately 70 USD), goods transfer worth IDR 303,000 (approximately 20 USD, and 16 days of labor. The result from logistic regression analysis identifies that the determinants of transfers from children to parents are some of the children's characteristics such as education, age, marital status, work, income, and living in urban regions. In addition, from the parent's perspective, parents' characteristics that affect the transfer amount are age, health condition, and widow status.

Abstract

This paper investigates the effect of job satisfaction on a turnover intention at the Star Hotel Semarang. We use 113 respondents using a non-probability sampling method at the Star Hotel Semarang. Using linear regression, we found the negative relationship between job satisfaction and turnover, suggesting a problematic association between job satisfaction and turnover intention. Therefore, our result suggests that other factors could be the obstacles to job satisfaction, such as the nature of the employee's work that was not under the job description, too strict supervision by the superiors, and a very long time to obtain the job promotion.

Abstract

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) is an epidemic that has affected all aspects of life, especially transportation and tourism. The operational mode of transportation has strict requirements from both the passenger and operator side to carry out health protocols and support the Government's efforts to prevent the increase in the positive rate of Covid-19 with a large-scale social restriction (PSBB) policy. On the other hand, these regulations impact the decisions of tourists and passengers to postpone or even cancel their trips. So this research was conducted with qualitative descriptive analysis method by describing the object of research based on related data and information. In general, this description can explain the phenomena relating to how AirAsia Indonesia is dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. The data are taken from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Central Statistics Agency on tourism and transportation developments in Indonesia, and the AirAsia Indonesia Annual Report. The results found that there was a decrease in passengers, both domestic and International, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. So AirAsia Indonesia's strategy is to maintain the Company's performance by launching Unlimited passes, AVA Chatbot, Super ASEAN, and opening six new flight routes.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how the COVID-19 pandemic impacts the Indonesian tourism sector. By investigating some secondary sources, we find that the number of tourist arrivals in Indonesia fell by 71 percent during the pandemic. In addition, foreign exchange earnings through industry and tourism in 2020 decreased by 81 percent at $3.2 billion compared to 2019 of $16.9 billion. On the other hand, this study found that government policies such as social restrictions taken by the government greatly affected the Indonesian tourism sector. The tourism sector that is most affected is the sector that is directly related to the presence of foreign tourists and domestic tourists, such as MSMEs, hotels, and the culinary industries. The government needs to periodically evaluate the policies taken so that the tourism sector can also continue to run as it should while still complying with health protocols.

Abstract

This study intends to see the meaning of happiness of women entrepreneurs in the business. This research was conducted in the city of Surakarta using qualitative methods with a phenomenological approach and social constructivist perspective. The results showed that happiness that is in line with a successful business is accompanied by a calm heart and mental condition and away from worry and sadness. In achieving happiness, there are supports influenced by both material and non-material aspects. Women entrepreneurs in Surakarta interpret success not only from the material side but also from the peace of mind, such as the absence of worry and fear, which shows that happiness goes in the same direction with success.

Abstract

Asian financial crisis has led many countries to perform related party transactions, which are transactions made by the firms to affiliated parties and often performed by controlling shareholders. The emergence of related party transactions cannot be separated from the existence of pyramidal ownership, where the controlling shareholder has several layers of ownership. Just as related party transactions can create a conflict of interest between the controller and the minority, the controller may transfer firms’ resources or assets to a parent entity that is not normally listed on a stock exchange. Therefore, in our paper, we would like to discuss about different aspects and arguments on the impact of related party transactions. Prior studies provide various contributions, as one argues that related party transactions are part of an efficient contract, where the two connected parties have better information with each other due to the connection than the unaffiliated parties. On the other hand, several studies suggest that related party transactions have a bad impact and are full of expropriation of minority interests.
