Abstract

English as international language becomes the bridge between the guests and the host in tourism activities. As the consequence, Indonesia as the country that popular with its tourism potential should prepare its human resource to support the tourism activity for its betterment. One of them is preparing them with English Macro-skill. English macro-skills consist of 4 skills: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. This research is aiming at analyzing the needs of English Macro-skills for the Tourism Students of Higher Education. Empirical data in this research were collected through questionnaire. The questionnaire was spread trough 100 tourism students of Ambarrukmo Tourism Institute Yogyakarta whose experience in doing internship period. The result found that one skill is above important than the others, some found that all of them are important, or they should be taught integrated. As the findings show, based on the students’ internship experience and the students’ perspective, those 4 English macro-skills are important but they have different frequency of use in the work place. Reading is the most frequently use since they often deal with short functional text, such as announcements and notice. Then it was followed by listening, writing, and speaking.

Abstract

There can be multiple sorts of bilingual education, they depend on how the two languages are taught, on the teaching goals and on the teachers. Moreover, it is on the pupils, methods, state policy and society's attitude towards bilingualism. Dyatmika school is an example of a bilingual school in Bali. Dyatmika School (Sekolah Dyatmika) is currently in its 17th year of operation and has grown to offer a rich educational programme in English and Indonesian to children from the age of 3 to 18. The Primary School of Dyatmika School covers classes 1 to 6 and has a dual language program of Indonesian and English. English literacy has been done for years, but intensive Indonesian literacy has just been done for a year and a half. It can be said that this bilingual literacy program has just started for 1.5 years. It is important to see the perspective of the teachers towards the bilingual literacy program run in Dyatmika School. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The research subjects of the present study were the national teachers of Dyatmika school. The subjects were class teachers and one was a substitute teacher. Based on the research conducted, there are two main results, namely (1) there are four biliteracy programs done by Dyatmika School involving reading aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and home reading. (2) According to the local teacher’s perspective, the biliteracy program applied in Dyatmika is beneficial for the students as well as for the teachers. The correlation between both languages in which they are presenting a similar topic but in a different way make the students get a deeper understanding of the topic.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analysed the Instrumental Motivation of English online learning during pandemic covid-19. Teachers and learners must be consistent in carrying out learning in special conditions nowadays. A teacher has very important role in fostering student motivation to take part in online learning, so the failures in the process of transferring knowledge to students can be minimized. This research is quantitative and descriptive qualitative study to examine Instrumental motivation in online learning during pandemic covid-19. The random sampling was used in this study. The questionnaire was used as an instrument in this study. The questionnaire consists of 12 questions as a test of instrumental motivation which is divided into three different types of questions such as: academic motivation, individual motivation and social motivation. The responses obtained from the participants were classified into five categories according to Gardner's Attitude and Motivation (Jefiza, 2017), such as; strongly agree, agree, doubt, disagree and strongly disagree. It was found that the motivation of students in online learning conducted in class was to finish on time. The total mean of academic aspect is 3.61 at the moderate level. Meanwhile, for the personal aspect, it was found that the value for the total mean of the personal aspect was 3.69 at a high level, and the mean of social aspects on instrumental motivation was 3.89 at a high level. It can be shown that, the students still have high motivation in taking online learning even during the pandemic covid-19.

Abstract

The objective of the present study is to find out whether or not speaking skill of thetenth-gradestudents of SMA N 8 Denpasar can be improved through Inside-Outside Circle.This also helps the students to think critically about a topic. A scientific research should havean objective of study because it can make the research being useful and directed. Theobjective of the present study is to find out whether or not speaking skill of the tenth-gradestudents of SMA N 8 Denpasar can be improved through Inside-outside circle. The presentstudy was a classroom action research (CAR) as a research design which concerns withteaching speaking through Inside-outside Circle. In the present study, the teaching andlearning process was a cyclical process and divided into some cycles where each cycleconsisted of some interrelated activities such as planning, action, observation, and reflection.The research instruments which were used in this study were a test (pre-test and post-test),and questionnaire. Based on the findings, the pre-existing data showed that the subjects stillhad low skill in English especially in speaking. The result of the pre-test showed that only 9subjects can pass the minimum passing grade. In line with the post-test of the cycle I, thedata showed that 22 subjects could pass the minimum passing grade. Finally, the post-testof cycle II showed that there were 32 subjects who passed the minimum passing grade. Theincreasing mean score showed that the subjects’ speaking skill could be improved byimplementing Inside-outside Circle.

Abstract

This Research entitled “Students’ Syntax Error in Making English Conversation, An Error Analysis Study. Basically, it is commonly found that English structure was difficult learned by Indonesian native elementary students. This study was focused on the exploration of foreign language errors and mistakes uttered by younger students. The research method applied in this research consists of approach research, kind and data source, method, and technique of collecting data, method, and technique of analyzing data, and method and technique of presenting the data analysis. A qualitative approach was used in this research and the data source was done by the researcher toward Elementary School 5th Grade Students. The method used in collecting data was by using the observation method and interview method. Then, the result of the analysis was presented by using formal and informal methods. The discussion of the problems was preceded by errors in syntax, such as errors in the scope of clause and phrase, the omission of article and preposition, the omission of the copula be, and error in using to (infinitive). From the result and discussion, it could be concluded that the researcher found some errors in using English done by the Elementary School 5th Grade Students, related to syntax. The writer was aware that this research has some limitations or shortages so it is hoped that this research could be continued in order to get a better result for the society in general.

Abstract

Textbook is one of the learning materials that can be used by teacher and students in order to help the teaching and learning process in the classroom. An analysis to a textbook is needed, moreover after the curriculum was launched. The object of the study is students English textbook entitled “ Think globally act locally” published by Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia. This study was designed in descriptive qualitative research because the object of the study was a document book. Moreover, as the data was in the form of words and documents, so the data were analyzed qualitatively. The results of the study show that the suitability of the material in the textbook is 78.12%, which can be concluded that the material from the textbook has met the standard of content eligibility in the textbook. Meanwhile, the feasibility of using the language in the textbook is 75%, which can be concluded that the book uses language in accordance with BSNP assessment standards

Abstract

The development of the global world has demanded the children of today to grow faster and compete more closely. One ability they should have to be able to compete with the globalization is ability to communicate in English. As we know that the ability of children to absorb a variety of information around it is extraordinary. So, when we want a child can have a good ability in communicating with English, English learning should be done since the early phase. But in practice, there are some obstacles encountered such as the children difficulty in understanding the subjects of this foreign language. This is reasonable because the position of English in Indonesia is as a foreign language. To overcome these obstacles, it requires effective learning techniques, appropriate, and interesting so that learners are motivated to learn this foreign language. Abstract

Family takes important influences on the education of children's moral and personality development. Families especially parents are the main agencies to teach children new things as well as goodness or badness. Early family education should include three aspects namely cognitive, affective and psychomotor aspects. In early family education, parents should impart honest behaving, polite speaking, and responsibility-taking. In this early family education, educational interaction occurs firstly and foremost to the children who would become the foundation of their further education. Cultivating children's attitudes should be carried out by school teachers. There are several roles that can be implemented by the teacher namely; as a model, mentor, coach, motivational speaker, and evaluator. The role of teachers as educators (nurturer) are the roles that are associated with the duties of assistance and encouragement (supporter), the tasks of supervision and coaching (supervisor) as well as tasks related to disciplining children the child was being well behaved against the school rules and norms of life in the family and society. By optimizing the role of parents and teachers in the cultivation of the attitude, then it will be able to reduce bullying behavior in early childhood. The children's experiences with bullying will give long term impacts. For the children having bullying victims, the experience will be a nightmare that never disappears from their memories.

Abstract

The 4 Cs 21st century skills framework has included collaboration as one of the critical skills for now and future generation living. In EFL context, studies about collaboration are often connected with collaborative writing (CW). This strategy has been more popular especially in higher education as academic writing and collaboration skills development strategy. Numbers of studies reported not only the outcome but also the process of collaborative writing. This paper synthesizes research reports in the last decade collected from online publication including unpublished thesis and dissertation as well as articles in journals related to language education. Inspired by Dillenbourg (1996), this synthesis report is organized into four dimensions; focus on effect, condition, interaction, and technology use. Finally, some possible future research questions are pointed out.

Abstract

Structure is improbable separated with the English literature and this concept should be simply applied for linguists or apprentices in English for Foreign Language and English for Second Language as well. However, in the process of presenting the text using grammar, pupils tend to make inaccurate comprehension frequently. So in this occasion, the researcher analyzed the learners’ grammar mistakes in written text through narrative of 31 apprentices in STIBA Saraswati Denpasar. The method in delivering the result of this article used qualitative research which discovered and explained students’ inaccurate grammar on some typical of structure. The final achievement found by the writer was that more than 50% sample of texts had mistakes on past sentences while the least number of grammar mistakes which on present perfect, simple past: be, preposition plural – singular, modal, gerund, to infinitive, passive voice and subject pronouns were slightly under 49%.
