Abstract

In the process of producing a writing in English, students certainly experience difficulties since English is a foreign language as experienced by students of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The preliminary observation showed that students have problem in all components of writing and tends to repeat the same mistakes. To overcome these problems, peer-correction techniques are implemented. This study was conducted to improve students’ writing skill using peer-correction, find the most affected component of writing and show students’ responses. There are three steps in this study including pretest, implementation of peer-correction and post-test. Pre-test was conducted at the beggining of the meeting with the aim of knowing the initial ability of students’ writing. The implementation of peer-correction was conducted in two cycles which each cycle including planning, implementation of action, observation and final reflection. Post test was conducted in each cycle to determine the ability of students’ writing after implementing peer-correction techniques. The result showed that the implementation of peer-correction techniques was able to improve students’ writing skill in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language and mechanics in which content is the most affected. Moreover, students showed positive response toward the implementation of peercorrection.

Abstract

The objective of this classroom action research was to know whether or not listening comprehension of the Basic Listening class students of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University academic year 2016/2017 can be improved through dictogloss technique. The present research was carried out through dictogloss technique in two cycles; each cycle consisted of two sessions. The data were collected by administering the instruments to the subjects. The result of the post test in each cycle showed that there was significant improvement of the subjects’ comprehension in listening. The subjects also gave positive responses toward the implementation of dictogloss technique in teaching and learning process. To sum up, the present classroom action research showed that listening comprehension of the Basic Listening class students of English Language Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training, Mahasaraswati Denpasar University academic year 2016/2017 can be improved through dictogloss technique.

Abstract

The success of the teaching-learning process is not only supported by the students but also by the teacher as central learning. In this case, students and teachers have an equally important role. The students will be enthusiastic in learning when they have good teachers in transfer information, material, and knowledge. Teaching English as a foreign language to adult students is not essay job to do. It needs kinds of strategies in teaching and method to transform knowledge into them. It is because English is difficult and not an essay to be learned for them. English language as a foreign language has so many challenges to be faced when learned it. Many factors showed that English is difficult to be learned by students at a higher level such as they are lack vocabulary, confusing to express their ideas, lazy to practice English, bored in teaching strategy, or media that lecture used. In this situation, the lecture should choose appropriate media, strategy, or method when teaching. And one of the media can be used is comic. Comics are a series of pictures that contain images and balloons to write a story. This research showed that learning by implementing comics was so significant to improve students’ willingness in learning vocabulary. It prof by the increasing mark of students in English objects, the present list was always full and the atmosphere of the classroom is so lively. The class was always happy, enthusiastic, and comfortable to follow the lesson.

Abstract

This research was conducted in attempt to analyze and describe the types ofauthentic assessment implemented by the EFL Teachers at MA DI PUTRA NURULHAKIM. This research applied a descriptive research designsince it was aimed at analyzingand describing the types of authentic assessment practiced by the EFL teachers in Englishclasses in MA DI PUTRA NURUL HAKIM. The method of gathering the data wasobservation supported with document study and interview to get more deeply. In relationto the problem raised, the current study found that there were various types of authenticassessment used by the EFL teachers. They were oral presentations and dramatizations,story telling, reading aloud,demonstration, constructed response items, writing samples,and peer assessment. The researcheralso found that the EFL teachers integrated one skillwith others since one single method of assessment can be used to assess more than one skill,and one skill was assessed by using some types of assessement

Abstract

This journal aims to investigate the effectiveness of PICTUREBOOK in resolve the problem of low interest in reading, especially for young learners. Reading is something that is learned. Reading means gaining an understanding of the written symbols represented by the sounds of oral language. This is an important skill to learn as it opens the doors to further studying, better job opportunities and to a whole other world that happens in print. There are many strategies that can be used to teach reading for young learners one of them is by using a picture book. A picture book is a book contained illustrations on each page accompanied by texts which tell about the same story told by the illustrations. In this journal, the authors use a qualitative research method, by reviewing some journals from other researchers. The result of this research proves that picture books can improve and motivate young learners to enhance and also motivate young learners to prefer reading. Picture books can visualization literacy skills and train children to comprehend the story from multiple perspectives.

Abstract

Through this paper, the strategies of avoiding plagiarism implemented by the participants were presented. There were 136 fifth semester students of English Language Education Study Program (hereafter, ELESP) in Mahasaraswati Denpasar University who willingly contributed to the research investigation. All of them enrolled the Writing IV course which mainly focuses on academic writing and plagiarism. To attain the data, an open-ended questionnaire was distributed which followed by interview and Focus Group Discussion (henceforward, FGD). The obtained data were analyzed by means of Interactive Model which involves data collection, data filter, data presentation, and verification. It was found that the students encompassed 4 strategies in the attempt to avoid plagiarism such as producing a thorough outline prior to drafting, using own words, citing: quoting, paraphrasing, and utilizing plagiarism checker. These strategies are categorized into 3 different divisions based on the period of applying them.

Abstract

This study aims at describing how the students can improve their speaking skill and that also part of the teachers’ job. A teacher is expected to have right teaching techniques to provide students with appropriate teaching materials and to create a positive classroom environment. The data of this study were collected through observations, planning, action, and reflection, some of the researchers were conducted in two cycles. The data were obtained by interviewing the English teachers and students. The result of this study showed that the speaking skill can improved through guessing games. These were confirmed by the data on the finding and discussion in the researchers’ article

Abstract

This study involves the discovery of verbal and non-verbal signs, which also describe the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs found in the facial wash commercial advertisements. The data were taken from three printed facial wash advertisements. The data source has been taken from the internet. This study used the semiotic hypothesis provided by Saussure (1983: 65) to find out the verbal and non-verbal signs and the theoretical meaning provided by Barthes (1977) to find out the meaning of verbal and non-verbal signs in the facial wash ads. The analysis used a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the results. As a result, the three facial wash ads show verbal and nonverbal signs that enable the company to market its product. In the verbal signs of the advertising, most of them contain denotative meaning and non-verbal signs which is in part, contain connotative meaning in certain advertisements. Two advertisements used a female as a model; one advertisement used a male as a model. This means that advertisers seek to gain public attention through the use of pretty females, popular figures and natural extracts or ingredients.

Abstract

This paper aims at showing the problems with reference to pronunciation of English sentences spoken by Indonesians. The unavailability of some English consonants in Bahasa could lead the Indonesians into mistaken pronunciations. To obtain the data of how well the English pronunciations uttered by the Indonesians, a speaking test was held. The respondents for this test are fifteen Indonesians with different ages and social backgrounds. The results show that the English consonants which are absent in Bahasa caused some puzzlement for the speakers which made them had a tendency to pronounce the words by using the nearest sound from the Bahasa phonemes towards the English phonemes. Fine comprehension by reading English dictionary frequently together with adequate proper listening and speaking practises are needed by the non native speakers in order to achieve better ability related to English pronunciation.

Abstract

This study was conducted to gather sufficient information on the language use: code mixing, code switching, borrowing, pidginization, and creolization. The method used in this study is through a literature study that collects several previous studies to answer about code mixing, code switching, borrowing, pidginization, and creolization purposes. The results of this study that code can be a variety related to the element of language like sentence, clause, phrase and word which have the limitation because the code which is chosen by the speaker based on his/her necessity in communicating. CodeMixing is the mix of code from two languages or more in some content of conversation in form of a sentence, while Code-Switching defined as a term which is used to indicate exchange of two or more languages, varieties of language, and can be also an exchange in style. Moreover, Borrowing is the process of importing linguistic items from one linguistic system into another, a process that occurs any time two cultures are in contact over a period of time. Furthermore, Pidginization is a simplification of code of language which has arisen as the result of contact between people of different languages usually formed a mixing of the languages. When pidgin develops to creole, it is described as creolization. Creole is a pidgin which is modified and appropriated in its structure and vocabulary.
