Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss the relevance of the political ethics of Peter L. Berger's development to the development and development of tourism in Indonesia in general and NTT in particular in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai. The development and development of tourism in Indonesia aims to increase the quality and quantity of tourism destinations and create a tourism industry capable of driving the national economy. This has been carried out properly according to its purpose. However, there are several tourism developments in NTT which in the end only give rise to domination, resource grabbing, marginalization, subordination, exploitation and violence in its various forms. Peter L. Berger through his book Pyramid of Sacrifice, suggests a moral dimension, namely the problem of costs that may exist in political policies. A politician must take into account the consequences of his actions for others, especially cost considerations, namely the calculus of pain and the calculus of meaning. It is interesting that tourism development also creates a new context for the work of the Catholic church's pastoral ministry. Therefore, the Catholic church is required to actively participate in directing tourism development in order to ensure that all people can access and enjoy prosperity and justice together. The method used in this paper is the method of literature and the contribution of this paper to the welfare of the nation and state in all dimensions of life.

Abstract

The practice of interpreting Scripture by the Church Fathers has become a precious legacy and has significantly contributed to the development of current methods of interpreting Scripture. One of the figures in this context is Origen. This paper explores Origen’s method of scriptural interpretation through observation of his homily on the figure and story of Rahab (Jos 2:1–24) contained in his Homilies on Joshua. The research method used is a literature study. Based on the analysis of his homily on Rahab, it was found that Origen intensely used allegory as a method to convey profound spiritual meaning in interpreting Scripture. In addition, he also combined allegorical with other methods such as typological, Scriptura scripturae interpres, Christological, and ecclesiological. The findings can make significant contributions for Christians today. First, by interpreting the physical violence in the story of Rahab as ‘spiritual violence’, Christians are invited to counteract and prevent the misuse of violent texts in Scripture as motivation and justification for committing wrongdoing. Secondly, by placing Rahab as a symbol of divine love and mercy, Origen shows that all people can belong to the family of God through faith in Jesus, repentance, and good deeds.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the relationship between politics and technology by specifically discussing how the Internet supports and hinders democracy. This conceptual elaboration was prompted by recent controversies about the democratic power of the Internet. The controversy is framed in three perspectives, namely the perspective of utopia, dystopia, and syntopia. By using a qualitative approach and constructivist paradigm as well as literature studies, this paper argues that the three perspectives are reductionist and simplistic. Based on their technological determinism approach, they ignore subject agency and socio-cultural context in framing the relationship between the Internet and democracy. This paper offers holistic reading that the success and failure of technology adoption in democratic practice is a product of the organic interaction between technology and subject agency as well as social, political, and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Famous for its distinctive Komodo dragons (Varanus Komodoensis) and features home to underwater ecosystems, the Komodo National Park (KNP) has become a prominent and favorite destination of visitors locally and globally in recent years. Situated in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, KNP has three prime islands: Rinca, Komodo, and Padar. The infrastructure development in KNP formulated in 2020 by the central government of Indonesia, including establishing offices, photograph areas, clinics, warehouses, public spaces, and tour guides' offices, raises controversy about this decision. While the government of Indonesia persuaded citizens that this erection was a conservation effort for protection, preservation, and utilization, UNESCO refused this plan by enacting a refusal document and assessing whether the development could affect the property's Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) before the review of the relevant environmental impact analysis by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Additionally, the local people argue this plan will threaten the giant lizard's habitat regarding the entry of heavy equipment and disadvantage local tourism actors. Using a systematic literature review method, this piece collects and discovers a different concept in the issue of infrastructure development in KNP instead of another scholar's perspective. Walpole and Goodwin (2000) find that economics and facilities are the prominent aspects of tourism, while UNESCO considers the environment in development. In contrast to popular belief, this paper indicates a significant role of local people, known as Ata Modo, in the KNP establishment. This paper's findings propose that Ata Modo, as local people/tribes in KNP, should not be relocated from their area and instead be involved in the decision-making process. The bottom-up approach can be executed as a practice in a democratic process. From the fiscal approach, this development will positively impact local people's economy through collaboration and stakeholder participation.

Abstract

In this paper, I explore the philosophical ideas of Karol Wojtyla, focusing on his anthropology rooted in personalism. Wojtyla emphasized the interconnectedness of individuals, drawing attention to themes like participation, solidarity, and self-giving. His philosophy underscores the complexity of the human person and their inherent relational nature. I analyze his thoughts on the experience of actions and events, the relationship between person and action, and the person's transcendence through truth and self-gift. This study highlights the inherent dignity of each individual and argues that Wojtyla’s philosophy offers a coherent personalist perspective that merits further exploration.
