Abstract

“Picture tells a thousand words“. It is important that teachers help the students organize their writing which they are learning to build and enhance their writing skill. Graphic organizer is a creative great media for comparing and contrasing text or story and can easily be applied to any kind of topic to help the students understand the differences between the texts or stories. Beside that aim, graphic organizer also helps the students to organize their writing skill and enhance their writing skill well. Graphic organizer is considered to enhance student’s writing skill, also expresses the students creativity by using the all kind of text, image and graphics, so the research employing observation and carried by descriptive research method. By implementing the strategy of using graphic organizer in students’s writing project, teacher will hopefully get the insight of using creative media to enhance students’ writing skill. Key words: graphic organizers; media, writing

Abstract

AbstrakThis research is an overall view over translation of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) especially simple sentences in the novel The Help by an American author Kathryn Stockett and in the translation by Barokah Ruziati. The writer chooses this topic and the novel as main sources that are analyzed because she realizes that the use of Non-Standard English particularly AAVE is rarely used in writing novels in general.The objectives of this research are: (1) to analyze the translation of simple sentences   from   Non-Standard   English   into   simple   sentences   from   Standard Indonesian; (2) and to analyze the result that accordance with a good criteria of translation.This novel is written in Non-Standard English particularly AAVE and it is translated into Standard  Indonesian.  The writer analyzes simple sentences in the novel to figure out the quality of its translation.To analyze this novel the writer uses descriptive    qualitative    method.    The writer analyzes descriptive data in form sentences, in specific are simple sentences that are taken from the novel. From this research it can be conclude that there is63.29% of accurate translation and 36.70% of less accurate translation.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to obtain an empirical data about developing students’ critical thinking by using problem based instruction strategy. The method of this research was experimental study and conducted upon 60 students of fourth semester of English Department at University of Indraprasta PGRI in 2015-2016 academic year. The instrument tests were firstly tried out to determine the validity and reliability. Hypothesis testing techniques performed by ttest, and obtained a value of 6,012 with significance level ? = 0,95%, while the ttable was 1,701. Thus, it seen that ttest was higher than ttable, the hypothesis null (H0) was rejected and research hypothesis (H1) was accepted. So, it can be concluded that developing students' critical thinking by using problem based instruction strategy was significant.

Abstract

Code switching and code mixing are the strategy of adapting two languages in a speech. The objective of this research is to find the reason why the characters switch or mix their speaking. Revealing and classifying the kinds of code switching and code mixing are also the aim of this study. The writer chooses novel as the object of this study because the characters of this novel are bilingual who are able to speak more than one language. The type of this research is library research. Therefore, in conducting this journal, descriptive qualitative is used as the method of the analysis. The writer collects data by reading the novel, and marking them to make it easier to analyze. The result of this research points out that code mixing is frequently used by the character in the novel. The writer has collected about five kinds of code switching externally and ten kinds of code mixing. Further result, they are five kinds of internal code mixing, and five kinds of external code mixing, and the rest, there are five of external code switching. They tend to choose lexical items that are appropriate from the language where their repertoire is more comprehensive

Abstract

This paper offers a broad semiotical overview of the horror film, in Conjuring 2. Horror movies aim to bring the audience to deep fear. Therefore, this out of our complacency in the quotidian world, by way of negative emotions such as horror, fear, suspense, terror, and disgust, that is represented in movies. To do so, horror addresses fears that are both universally taboo and that also respond to historically and culturally specific anxieties.Therefore, this journal focuses in to main characters Valak and Loraine, who lead this film to be a horror. This journal is the result of an exploration into the literary reviews of the contemporary horror genre and a semiotic analysis a paranormal, Lorraine. In this journal, the research would discuss a few ethical and semiotic problems related to reality's ability to actually take place within, and break through, fictional representations. This research concerned with the presence of material bodies in the performing sign and code of binnary opposition. This research of signs, codes and conventions in film is called semiotics. Semiotic analysis is a way to explain how an audience makes meaning from codes. This research describes an innovative film studies assignment in which readers can explore still horrorism and Hollywood cinema

Abstract

The internet advance technology allows an answer to the needs above. Young people are familiar with electronic devices, e.g., smartphone, tablet, iPad and computers as their part of daily activities. At this moment the writer proposes how the limited time and space of learning condition can be facilitated by accessing the anytime-anywhere interactive class even when presenting on a small smartphone. In a traditional classroom, the teacher is the primary source of information, and students are required to be in the same place at the same time engaging in the same activity. Making use of technology using smartphones as learning device has created an alternative to traditional classroom interface into a limitless time and space. It also changes the role of the teacher from being the primary source of information to facilitator and supervisor, and it allows the teacher to pay equal attention to every student. In addition to that, technology gives the students a new opportunity to access instructional materials at different times from different locations. Therefore, it is necessary to as the essential question: What can the applications of the designed material, as the designated teaching medium for Budi Luhur Junior High school students who were preparing for their involvement in the IYSF (International Youth Study Forum) Program.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out morphological and syntactical errors made by the students in their composition, the frequency of errors and  the dominant type of error, the sources of error, and find a remedial teaching. The method that was used in this research is descriptive method, a method which seeks to provide the depicition or description of a case. This research conducted on the second semester of 2016/2017 in SMK Kharismawita 2 Jakarta. Meanwhile, the sample of this research is 30 students of XI APh class of SMK Kharismawita 2. In this case, the researchers use purposive sampling in choosing the sample and  the method of this research is qualitative research.In this research the researchers are going to find some morphological errors made by the students, these errors can be classified into 9 categories of morphological errors. These are categories, number, percentage of morphological errors made by the students : adverbs, adjectives, indefinite demonstratives, adjectives, nouns, plurals, possesive adjectives, past formations, singulars and to infinitives.Meanwhile, in this research, the researchers are going to find some syntactical errors made by the students. These categories are categorized based on surface strategy taxonomy. These are the categories, the numbers and the percentage : omission, addition, misformation, and misordering.

Abstract

This article aims to prove that American people really still believe in the myth during the early twentieth-century. The writer has found many historical data that support this research. In literary research he uses an analytic descriptive method. Finally, the collected data is explained and analyzed in order to answer the research problems. To support this research, he uses two theories; they are mythology theory and literary sociology approach.Thornton Wilder describes portrait of the American society that still believed in the myths in his best play entitled Our Town (1983). They lived in fictional small town namely Grover’s Corner. In their daily activities, they kept firmly the belief in the myths without missing the faith to religion. They realized that there were many positive things and goodness in every myth. The central values on the play are talking about three phases of life such as childhood, marriage and death.We find many myths about the childhood, marriage and death on the play. All they are talking about myths of days, months, weather, time, color, and ghost. In every belief of the myths, all of them contain how we can choose a good and bad one in facing problem. We should not do what the belief forbids. If we disobey them, -as in myth told- we will get some bad effect.

Abstract

This paper explained about the language acquisition of the preschool students.  The language acquisition involved the mini research by using qualitative approach. The researcher did observation to TK. A Bintang Semesta and did case study to know the acquisition of classroom language in that school. The researcher also identified the process of children’ language acquisition and also identified the process of acquisition. In this paper also explain the relation of data in the field with expert opinion about language acquisition.Key words: language acquisition, classroom language, preschool students

Abstract

In this research, the writer  uses an action research. For collecting the data, the writer uses test and observation. The data sources of the research are the eleventh grade of  MA Mutmainah Bogor which consists of 38 students and an English Teacher  as the observer. Cycle I consists of planning, action, observation and reflection. Cycle II added by the revision of cycle I. Based on the results of the research, in  cycle I the percentage of students who achieved  Minimum Accomplishment Criteria (MAC) 75 is 63%. In other words, 24 students had achieved Minimum Accomplishment Criteria (MAC), while 14 students have not reached MAC. In cycle II, all of  students have reached Minimum Accomplishment Criteria (MAC). The result shows, in cycle II all of the students are able to comprehend  the text and to determain the main idea and reached Minimum Accomplishment Criteria (MAC) in  reading  it is 75. Thus, the hypothesis in this research is acceptable. It  means,  there is a significant  increasing in using SQ3R method  to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of MA Mutmainah Bogor. Therefore, the research was discontinued on the second cycle.
