Abstract

Making the advertisement is like we do communication with the others. In speech act, there are words include the meaning to convey the message to the viewers. The aim of this research is to describe the type of act of illocutionary and to analyze the most dominant illocutionary function produced in the advertising. This research is a descriptive research. The subject of this research is child milk advertising on television namely Bebelac 3, Nutrilon Royal 3, and Pediasure. The object of this research is a form of act illocutionary functions contained in advertising speech. Data acquisition uses note technique. Based on the analysis, the researchers get conclusion that the types of act illocutionary found in child milk advertising on television are declarative, representative, expressive, and commisive. In a child milk advertising on television, illocutionary function shows dominance representative and commisive. In the representative, this indicates the presence of a statement and affirmation. Moreover, in the commisives, this indicates the speaker give the promise to the viewers. Keywords:  Pragmatic, Speech act, Advertising

Abstract

This study discusses and analyzes the use of song in improving vocabulary mastery in listening to seventh grade students’ of Mts Al-Barry Cikalong. The main concern is about the description of song implementation in the classroom and the extent which song can help students’ improve their vocabulary mastery in the listening class. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the progress of students’ in terms of vocabulary mastery before and after listening to songs. This study uses classroom action research method. Ideally, classroom activities and assignments that form the methodology for teaching different language skills must be designed by the teacher and must be felt by students. The researcher conducts interviews to provide information and then the results of interviews are developed and analyzed. This data is analyzed through two cycles in action. Students' vocabulary mastery ability increases, we can see from the results of cycle 1 (pre-test) before listening to English song the average score is 52.0, 62.7, 58.6 and cycle 2 (post-test) after listening to English song the average score is 71.3, 83.4, 91.4. As an end point, this research is expected to bring contribution as an alternative technique to improve vocabulary teaching in listening classes as well as to develop teacher creativity.

Abstract

In the learning of English language at school there are many ways can be done by teachers, including in using of tools or props and media can be appropriate to the level and level of education available. For learning English at level of basic education there are a number of learning that can be used as alternatives, one of which is the song media. This article discussed about steps of implementation song media of elementary school at Cibeber 1 Cimahi. Analysis of the problems used as research materials using descriptive qualitative analysis, while the focus of the object of observation is the steps of media song implementation in the school mention above. From the result of observation and analysis conducted by the autors, it is known that there is still incompatibility in the steps of media song. Implementation conducted by teacher with the steps implementation of instructional media as recommended by the experts of English education, especially experts who deepen the problem of media implementation song in learning English at school.

Abstract

English is foreign language in Indonesia. In English, reading is one of skill that must be mastered by students. By mastering reading skill, it can be easier for student to comprehend the text that they read. However many students not understand how to comprehend the English text well, it caused by inapropriate technique used by the teacher in English teaching. According to the problem an appropriate technique should be applied to improve their reading comprehension. The aims of the research is to find out whether there is any improvement in the students’ reading comprehension using jigsaw technique. In this research, the writer uses pre-experimental design.The researcher takes 30 students as the sample of this research. The instrument of this research is a test uses in pre-test and post-test.The result of this research presents that the jigsaw technique is successful to improve the students’ reading comprehension. It can be sees from paired samples t-test that there is a significant difference for the pre-test score (M = 52.33 SD = 22.234) and post-test (M = 80.17 SD = 9.048), t (29) = -9.275 , p <0.05. It can be concludes that the jigsaw technique improves the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Listening is one of the language skills that quite difficult to master. Listening to more attention and more concentration is needed than any other skill. Listening is different from hearing. Hearing refers to the ear that the voice enters. Physically process, depending on whether they have a hearing problem, which happens automatically. While listening not only give an attention to the story, but the way it is told, language, intonation, voice, and body language. The objective of this study entitled “Teaching Listening Using Duolingo Application” was to reveal whether or not using an application called Duolingo in English learning significantly improves students' listening skills. This research used pre-experimental design and quantitative research method. This study involves 799 consisting of 24 classes in SMKN 2 Karawang and the author takes only one class of 36 students in X- Tata Boga 3 Class. Furthermore, the data taken from pretest and posttest results to find out whether using Duolingo apps improves students' listening skills. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 24 version. This study found that test of normality consist of the data of pretest is (0.076) and the data of posttest is (0.200) in 33 samples. In addition the value of Sig. (2-tailed) 0.000 because of the value of the Sig value. (2-tailed) < 0.005 it can be concluded that using Duolingo Applications can improve students' listening skills and also able to make the teaching list motivate students in learning English.Keywords:  Teaching, Listening, Duolingo Application

Abstract

In discourse features, including cohesion, there is an ellipsis. Ellipsis is one of the features to make communication more effective especially in written. Ellipsis exist in three kinds there are a nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. Based on that problem, the researcher wants to investigate what are the ellipsis elements used, implemented and how are the ellipsis expressed in Hinglish Short Movie which have title “Divorce” . In order that can give critical analyze, describe the ellipsis elements and the interpretation of the ellipsis in the dialogues of that movie itself and practically it gives contribution for the teachers, students, researcher, education and other researchers. The technique used by the researcher was documentation by watching “Divorce” Hinglish with analysis of the dialogues from the movie. From the data that have been analyzed, it was found that there were three types of ellipsis elements that occurred in the analysis of ellipsis in “Divorce” Hinglish Movie. The most frequent types were verbal ellipsis occurred 3 times clausal and nominal ellipsis occurred once of a time both of them. Abstract

Thematic progression is important in coherence to be considered as good text. So, it needs the element of thematic progression or it can be called theme and rheme. Theme and rheme constitutes the main part of clause, because comprehending the thematic progression may help to understand whole clause.  The coherence text should also be necessary written by students in senior high school in Batujajar. This investigation is conducted to consider the thematic progression and coherence in descriptive text. The purpose of this research is to identify types of thematic progression in students’ descriptive text and the levels of coherence in students’ descriptive text. The researchers use descriptive quantitative method.. The data are all clauses from paragraphs on text. The result of the result shows that there are two of three models of thematic progression found, namely zig-zag theme and re-iteretion. In addition, the finding also found that  there are three level coherence in every students’ descriptive text such as a good, fair, and less levels coherence.

Abstract

This research is entitled the analysis speech acts of Donald Trump’s speech. The study analyze the speech acts of President Donald Trump’s speech. The speeches used as the data are taken from White House online on September until October 2017 in USA. Moreover, the researcher focused on speech act of illocutionary acts. In this study the research used theory from Searle. From Donald Trump's speech, the researcher found 7% Declarative, 18% Representative, 31% Expressive, 29% commissive, and 15% Directive. The result showed that President Donald Trump’s more on sentence expressive. Analysis speech act help in the interpretation of the message in the selected speech.Keywords:  Speech act, types of speech acts

Abstract

The objective of this research focuses on students perceptions toward grammar in the English classroom. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method, the procedure for collecting data uses questionnaire analysis in google forms free online questionnaire. The population is 30 students in class TEI C at SMK TI Pembangunan Cimahi. The sample is 30 students. The results of the data analysis showed that 60% of students stongly agree that grammar in the English classroom important, while the other 40% agree. In addition 96% of students admit that their need to increase English grammar. The most dominant of students perceptions grammar showed to increase skills on grammar 96% of students choose to agree on statements. The findings revealed that students perceived differently toward grammar in the English classroom.CeivedKeywords: Students Perceptions, Grammar English.

Abstract

The objective of the research entitled “Teaching Speaking Throuh Group Discussion” at ten Grade student of SMKN 2 KARAWANG  was to find out whether or not teaching speaking using small group discussion technique was effective to increase the student speaking ability. The research used was used quantitative method one group pretest – postest design. The population of this research was 30 of the ten Grade student of SMKN 2 KARAWANG in academic year 2017 – 2018 and the sample was entire population. The instruments of this research was speaking test. The data of this research was collected by giving pretest and post test of speaking to the students sample. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23 version. The study found that the test of normality consist the data of pretest is (0,116) and the data of postest is (0,076). In addition the value of sig (2-tailed) 0,000 because of the sig value (2-tailed) <0,005 it can be conclude that using small group discussion can improve student speaking skill. Keywords : Teaching, Speaking, Small Group Discussion
