Abstract

In Indonesia, the position of English is as an foreign language. This is studied in formal schools as an important subject but not used for daily communication outside the classrooms. This condition become a big challenge for Indonesian students. They are defiance to employ various strategies to become successful English-language learners. This study was aimed to know the habitually of students' in strategies language learning use among students of different program: natural science and social science. The research design of this study is quantitative approach since it examines tendency and the data was in numerical form. The study was conducted at a Senior High School in Cikalong Kulon- Cianjur. In this study, the subject are 120 students containing of 60 natural science students and 60 social science students. The data was using SILL questionnaire. This questionnaire measures 6 strategies types of strategies language learning  which contains of 50 items. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2013 to calculate and to know the number and average, the last is rank to find the liability of language learning strategies used by both Social science students and natural science students. The data showing that the liability of types of strategies language learning used by the students are different. Natural science students most oftentimes used Compensation strategies. In contrast, social science students used metacognitive strategy as the most oftentimes used strategy.Keywords:  SILL, Language Learning Strategies, Learning English

Abstract

Listening is skill that seem very difficult to be mastered, because it needs more attention and concentration to comprehend the sounds (listening material).Teachers always uses their students, they may become interesting for one of the teaching which can make the students milirtes in studying is listening to song’s. They will not understand what they study wel as a result, the use of song is impelemented in this research to improve students’ listening skill. The researcher uses classroom action research method with 2 cycles at seven grade Students of MTs Nurul Wahab. Pre test is given to students before treatment while post test given in each cycle. The data analysis is conducted by calculating the mean score of each post test and compare it with minimum standard score (KKM).As the result, the pre test mean score is 59.3. The post test cycle 1 is 69.4 and the post test 2 is 77.5. The data shows students’ improvement in each cycle, There are 42% of students who pass KKM in pre test, 66% students pass KKM in post test 1 and 87.5% of students pass KKM in post test 2. Abstract

The objective of this research entitled Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension through Small Group Work Technique at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP ROSA JAYA on academic year 2016/2017 was to find out whether or not the technique was effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension. In this research, the method that the writer used was one group pretest-posttest design and quantitative research method. The instruments of the research were pretest and posttest which contained five questions which should be answered based on a text they read. The pretest was given to find out the comprehension of the students at the beginning before the treatment, and the posttest was given to find out the ability of the students after they were given treatment. The research population was the students of the seventh grade of SMP ROSA JAYA which consisted of three classrooms, and the sample of the research was 30 students selected using random sampling technique. The data of this research were collected by giving the students pretest and posttest. The collected data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of this research showed that: the mean score of pretest was 59.67. The mean score of posttest was 77.83. The t-observed was 4.812. The t-table critical value was 29 and significance level at 0.05 was 2.045. Based on the data analysis, the writer concluded that the alternative hypothesis was accepted because the tobs was higher than the ttable (4.812 > 2.045). It also meant that Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension Through Small Group Work Technique at the Seventh Grade Students of SMP ROSA JAYA on Academic Year 2016/2017 has significantly shown that the technique could improve the students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

Pragmatics is the study of the relationship between language and context that forms the basis of determining understanding of utterance. This study was entitled “An Analysis of deixis in The spider wick chronicles script”. The problems of this study were what types of deixis are used in the spider wick chronicles script, and what is the dominant deixis used in The Spider wick Chronicles movie script. The objectives of this study were to find the types of deixis and to find the dominant of deixis in The spider wick Chronicles movie script. This study was purposed to find out the types and the dominant of deixis are used in The spider wick chronicles script. The script was get from internet. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The following steps, it applied was the first, this study looked for the movie, the second, this study watched the movie, then, looked for the movie script of the movie “The spider wick chronicles”, the fourth, this study identified the sentence of the movie script based on four types of deixis. From the analysis, it is found that there are four types : personal deixis, time deixis, place deixis, and discourse deixis. Keywords:  Pragmatic, deixis, the spider wick chronicles script.

Abstract

This research become performed in MA Al-Mukhtariyah Mande West Bandung. The objective of this research is used to investigate the implementation of CIRC technique in improving the students reading comprehension of descriptive text. The method used in this research was quantitative method. The design of the research was pre-experimental design. There are three steps involving pre-experimental design. The first step is the administration of pre-test measuring the dependent variable. The second step is the application of the experimental treatment (independent variable) to the subjects, and the final step is the administration of a posttest measuring the dependent variable again. It has seven times of conducting data, namely pretest, posttest, and five times treatments. Based on the result of pre-test, we observed that students’ reading comprehension is below average, the mean score of pre-test is 42.79. After the implementation of CIRC technique in every meetings, the students’ reading comprehension had been getting better, it is able to be seen in average of the mean score of post-test becam 73.82. It is able to be concluded that CIRC techniqiue can improve students’ reading comprehension. Keywords:        Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Text, CIRC Technique

Abstract

Vocabulary known as an essential skill for learning to read, speak, write and listen. It is important to find the appropriate technique in order to improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The researchers did research with focuses on students’ perception towards using “dictionary pocket” in order to improve their vocabulary mastery. It was conducted using a qualitative descriptive method. To collect the data, the researchers use the instruments of an open-ended questionnaire and interview section. The samples were 36 students of second grade from Broadcasting major at SMK Negeri 1 Cimahi. The result of the questionnaire shows that it was found that almost all of the students feel that with learn vocabulary can be easier when they use the technique of remembering dictionary pocket. They also agree that dictionary pocket is an appropriate technique which is used to learn vocabulary. In the other hand, the result of interview shows, the students concede that they are feel helped and being motivated. It can be sum up that dictionary pocket is suitable to strengthen their vocabulary mastery. Dictionary pocket is useful enough because it can help them when they forget the word.

Abstract

Pronunciation is an aspect that students in Indonesia should be known and und  erstanding how to express each word in English. To make students easier to produce something in English, the writers take English song as a media to improve students’ pronunciation. Beside of they can learn how to produce something in English language; they can gain the language or a new vocabulary.  The research used pre experimental design with one group pre test and post test design which consists of 36 students as the sample. Then the data processed by SPSS 21. And the result of this research showed significance value was .00 and it is lower that the criteria .05. It means the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted that English song is influence media in improving students’ pronunciation.

Abstract

In teaching learning, teachers can use a lot of instructional media for students. Instructional media in teaching learning is very significant. In this technological age, the use of social media began to be used in all fields of life, including education. One of the most popular social media for students is instagram. Nowdays everyone has instagram accounts, including students. The students usually use it to share their personal information, such as uploading their pictures or videos and writing instagram captions about their activity. Therefore, this study aims to find out students’ perception towards social media instagram as an instructional media for students of Smk TI Pembangunan Cimahi. In this research, the researchers used qualitative descriptive method, the data was obtained from questionaire and interview. The participants of this study were 30 students in SMK TI Pembangunan Cimahi at X Rpl A. The results of this study is social media instagram has high potential if it is used as an instructional media in vocational school. Because it can use for consulting with teacher, share material, giving announcement, media for quiz and for discussion. On the point of that, based on interview and questionaire can be known 80,7% of students agree and strongly agree that socaial media is used as an instructional media.

Abstract

This research is titled "Figurative Language Analysis In Disney Song". The background of this research is to understand the use of figurative language contained in Disney song lyrics from the films Frozen and Tangled (Rapunzel). The objectives of this research are: (1) What types of figurative language are contained in the song, (2) figurative language functions contained in the song lyrics, and (3) what implicit meanings are contained in the lyrics of the song. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive in observation, collecting data and conclusions from the research. The results of this study indicate that there are 5 types of figurative languages used in the lyrics of the two songs including idioms, hyperbole, personification, simile and alliteration.

Abstract

This article aims to investigate equality meaning or synonym of swearing words in two language are English and Sundanese, other than this research was known the participants about meaning of swearing words in daily conversation. 44 people in one college with random sample technique answered the eleventh question in questioner with their perception of swearing words, and the transcript of daily conversation used to analyze their frequency and understanding about it. The results showed that 80% of participants did not understand with synonym of two language used, but almost in their daily conversation used it. Results can be inferred that people who use the swearing words did not certainly with meaning of it, they only say everything of swearing words but did not known about the meaning.
