Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the generic structure errors in in tenth grade students' efforts to compose descriptive writings at SMK Al Washliyah Sei Rampah. The researcher described and examined data from 20 student-written texts using a qualitative approach. 20 samples were taken from 50 populations. Testing methods are used by researchers to gather data. After reviewing the findings, the researcher came to the conclusion that three students continued to struggle with both identifying descriptive language and understanding how to describe it. Subsequently, Then, 12 students were successful in analyzing the general structure's content and earned 4 points (or 60%), 5 students earned 3 points (or 25%), and 3 students earned 2 points (or 15%). Students make the following mistakes while writing descriptive texts: a) they struggle to distinguish between identification and description; b) They only write descriptive texts containing broad information about a subject rather than to provide details. Students in the tenth grade at SMK Al-Washliyah 12 Sei Rampah exhibit a range of abilities depending on their gender. The data result for the tenth graders at SMK Al-Washliyah 12 Sei Rampah's descriptive writing proficiency is categorized as “excellent.”

Abstract

Nowadays, teaching and learning activities are not only in the classroom. There are many resources from the internet that can be used as learning tools outside the classroom. One of the activities is playing online games. Even though it sounds like something usual, online games can help students to improve their English skills, especially their vocabulary. Online games provide various vocabulary to the students and help them to enhance their vocabulary knowledge from the in-game facilities. This research aimed to explore students’ perceptions towards RPG online games enhancing their vocabulary knowledge. This research’s results will find out; 1) How the students perceive the online RPGs in enhancing students’ vocabulary knowledge? and 2) How do the students enhance their vocabulary knowledge other than online RPGs? The participants of this research are students from Universitas Internasional Batam who played any online role-playing games. By using descriptive quantitative, this research will gather the data via questionnaire. This research gets positive feedback from the participants. They are agreed that online RPGs is helping them to enhance their vocabulary knowledge from in-game features. There are also some of other apps that participants’ use to enhance their vocabulary knowledge. Researcher hopes this research can give new insights of online games to be used as a learning media for both students and teachers.

Abstract

This study looked into how well tenth-grade students' reading comprehension of narrative texts was improved by Google Play Books. The researchers also looked into the challenges that teachers and students encountered when utilizing Google Play Books in the classroom. A mixed-methods approach with an explanatory design was used in the study. Twenty students from a private high school in Batujajar who were in the tenth grade took part in the study. Through experiments, observations, questionnaires, and field notes, the researchers gathered data. The findings demonstrated how well Google Play Books works to increase readers' understanding of narrative text. Both students and teachers found the software to be helpful in the learning process. The program was not very difficult for the teachers to use, although they did run into some errors and issues while using it on some students' iPhones. Additionally, the students encountered certain practical and technological challenges when using Google Play Books, including signal issues, internet data utilization, and app satisfaction. According to the study's findings, teachers can successfully teach reading comprehension in narrative literature in the classroom by utilizing Google Play Books. However, in terms of technical concerns and selecting an interesting story, teachers need to be more prepared.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the types of participation exhibited by individuals engaged in a Muslim forum, specifically presenters, speakers/ustadz, and residents as participants of the forum. The primary objective of this study is to identify performance trends within the Muslim forum process through the application of an anthropolinguistic methodology. The observed patterns of involvement can be elucidated by examining the phenomena of speaking activity within the context of the Muslim forum process. The primary sources of data utilized in this study consist of video recordings, interviews, and observations. The present study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The findings of this study demonstrate that the presenter's performance include the initiation, conclusion, and facilitation of the event. The primary function of the speaker is to provide a lecture and provide guidance. The performance of the inhabitants includes the act of posing inquiries, providing answers, and reacting to both questions and jokes presented by the speaker. The Muslim forum primarily facilitates a lecture-based form of participation, characterized by limited interaction between participants throughout the lecture sessions.

Abstract

This study aimed  to identify the types of errors and the most frequent errors in the use of simple present tense in descriptive writing at SMAN 1 Sumber Marga Telang, Banyuasin. This study used the quantitative method. The subjects of this study were X MIPA 1 class students were selected by using the convenience sampling technique. The data were collected using writing task. The data were analyzed and classified based on the taxonomy of surface strategies proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). The results showed that there were four types of errors: the most frequent error was omission, which indicated that students' difficulty in understanding the use of to be and  suffixes s/es in the simple present tense. The frequency of omission errors was 51.72%, followed by misformation errors (18.39%), misordering errors (16.09%), and addition errors (13.79%). Finally, based on the results of this research, the percentage of errors made by students in class X MIPA 1  SMAN 1 Sumber Marga Telang, is still quite high.

Abstract

The article aims at portraying the learning engagement of high foreign language listening anxiety students in the implementation of narrow listening. The participants of the study consist of 42 English language education students with high foreign language listening anxiety of a private teacher training and education college in Jawa Timur province. This study used a case study method to observe the phenomenon of a listening activity. The data were collected through observation technique by using field notes. The collected data were then analyzed by using coding analysis. The results show that students have positive and negative behavioral, emotional and cognitive engagement dimensions.

Abstract

A speech act embodies many functions such as requesting, stating, inquiring, suggesting, reminding, and so on, that can be conveyed in various forms and through different objects. This study aimed to analyze the use of directive speech acts written on warning boards on modern rail transportation. The data of this study were in sentences on warning boards that contain directive speech acts, and obtained from February 20th – March 10th, 2023 on three selected modern railways in Yogyakarta; 1) Commuter Line (KRL), 2) Railink airport train, and 3) Prambanan Express (Prameks) train. This study applied the qualitative method to describe the explanations and the quantitative method to calculate the data found. The findings of this study revealed the use of directive speech acts on warning boards on modern railways functions to forbid (37.5%), order (18.8%), request (28.1%), suggest (3.1%), and warn (12.5%). The function of forbid is the most frequently used on the warning board with 12 data.  The sentences were conveyed through direct, indirect, implicit, and explicit strategies. Several factors influenced how the speech acts uttered considering the speaking components.

Abstract

This research aimed at investigating (i) internal factors; (ii) external factors which affect students’ writing anxiety in English language learning. Qualitative research method was used to gain the data from participants. The participants were 20 students of English education study program of a State Islamic Institute in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia who have already passed Academic Writing Course. The researchers adopt non probability sampling, namely, purposive sampling in recruiting participants. The data were collected through structured and unstructured interviews and data were analyzed through content analysis. The findings indicate that the internal factors include lack of experiences in writing process; external factors include time pressure, ways of evaluation, and linguistic difficulties. Internal factors and external factors in this research become the reasons why students feel anxious in the writing process especially in English language learning.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain strategies, and most dominant strategies in the translating process used by students of the Institut Agama Islam Negeri Palangka Raya English Language Study Program for interpreting narrative texts. Translation is a means of communication and translation strategy is a way to improve the ability to translate a text. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with personal data sources. Data was acquired through the use of questionnaires and interviews. The authors' analysis was based on the outcomes of a translation challenge given by 55 students. The finding revealed that the students employed all seven translation strategies from Vinay and Darbelnet when translating the narrative text. The three most regularly utilized translation strategies are borrowing (78%), Calque (61%), and Modulation (56%). This research is expected to provide insight into language training, particularly translation linked to translation methodologies utilised to translate. The correct application of the translation method during the translation process will result in accurate translation. Results of this study emphasise the need of offering tailored translation strategies teaching to EFL students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the factors causing reading comprehension difficulties. This study used a qualitative method with a case study research design to describe the factors causing reading comprehension difficulties among the seventh grade students in Palembang. The data were collected through structured interviews with four students and analyzed thematically. The study found five factors contributing to students' difficulties in reading comprehension, including problems with understanding long sentences, the use of poor reading strategies, lack of concentration, house environment, and school environment. This study provided suggestions for teachers and students. Teachers should use creative teaching methods and emphasize the development of all four language skills to make learning more interesting. Students should improve their English by enriching their vocabulary, using effective reading comprehension strategies, and seeking support from parents.
