Abstract

Interjection was an important part of language used to express feelings or emotions under any circumstances. In Digital communication, interjections were often used to express feelings quickly and efficiently. The purpose of this research was to describe the expression of interjections in digital communication. This research used qualitative research. The method used in this research was the descriptive method. Digital communication, WhatsApp user was the subject of this investigation in WhatsApp Group. The object of the research was the text used in conversations within the WhatsApp group.The findings contained 6 type interjections from 12 data. There were Interjection of Annoyance, Interjection Admiration or Satisfaction, Interjection of Gratitude, Interjection of Hope, Interjection of Surprise, and Interjection of Call which were found as a consequence of the research. Annoyance was the most frequently used interjection.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the impact of Whatsapp-based instruction in using indirect Language Learning Strategies (LLS) on their academic writing performance. The participants were Indonesian 60 female and 52 male students aged 16 to 26. The current study was experimental in design, with quasi pre and post-tests for the experimental and control groups. There was one independent (experimental) variable and two dependent variables. The post-test treatment's means were all higher than the pre-test treatment due to the six indications. In other words, from the pre- to post-tests, all indicators increased on average. In accordance with current trends, Whatsapp can be employed as an LLS teaching tool.

Abstract

This qualitative exploratory study, utilizing the Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (SILL), examines English learning strategies among 16 high English proficiency students majoring in Information Systems. The research aims to uncover critical insights into their English language learning strategies. The results revealed two primary findings. Firstly, metacognitive strategies emerged as the most highly used strategy, with 57% of respondents using it. Metacognitive strategies, characterized by their indirect nature, enable learners to take charge of their learning process. It highlights the significance of metacognitive reflection and decision-making skills in improving English proficiency. Secondly, within each learning strategy category, three strategy actions demonstrated strikingly similar usage percentages, each at 87.5%. These strategy actions encompass focused listening during English conversations, practicing English phonetics, and creating mental associations with new words in contextual scenarios. This research underscores the significance of metacognitive strategies and practical English language learning techniques among high English proficiency students majoring in Information Systems. Future studies using a variety of research instruments can contribute positively to providing more comprehensive insights into English learning strategies.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the following: (1) the use of audiovisual media; (2) the application of audiovisual media; and (3) the impact of audiovisual narrative media on vocabulary acquisition both before and after using the product. This study involved both research and development.This study used both quantitative and qualitative methods, designing research and development utilising the Borg & Gall paradigm. There were three stages to this study project: fundamental research, design and development research, and experimental research. This study employed the Borges and Gall Research and Development (R&D) approach to gather data through the use of an unstructured interviewing tool and questionnaire.There are a few steps involved in using it.The procedures were as follows: (1) gather data (analysis process required utilising data from questionnaires, pre- and post-tests, and other sources), (2) develop product design, (3) validate product design, (4) test product (teaching and learning process), (5) revise product design, and (6) final product.Students in junior high school's IX grade are the subject of the research. This study's scope is limited to creating narrative material for junior high school students in the IXth grade. The final book that can be used to teach junior high school students about vocabulary mastery in the IX grade is this one.

Abstract

Beliefs play an important role in teaching and learning because they can impact on teaching behaviors and direct teachers’ decision making about how they will teach in the classroom. Therefore, the researcher attempted to deeply explore students’ beliefs about the teaching and the teaching profession which were classified into four aspects: beliefs about teaching methodology, teachers’ roles, teachers’ challenges, and the teaching profession. The participants were the students who majored in English Literature and they mostly had little teaching experience. The context of exploring the beliefs was in the post-pandemic recovery or when the integration of technology has become the new face of teaching and learning. Through the open questionnaire, it was found that, in the post pandemic era, the teaching methodology should involve offline, online, and blended learning. Second, the roles of teachers were more likely to be facilitators and motivators. Third, the major challenge was in the use of technology itslef, and the teaching professions could be a potential and promosing career and a profession which contested plenty of obstacles.

Abstract

This study employs qualitative content analysis to explore the diverse vocabulary usage within the animated film "Toy Story I" and its potential to enhance English proficiency in children. The research focuses on systematically sampling dialogues categorized into figurative, idiomatic, and slang vocabulary types, unveiling the intricate language dynamics embedded in the film. Through this analysis, the study highlights how exposure to various vocabulary types in multimedia entertainment can contribute to a comprehensive language learning experience. By immersing children in figurative expressions, idiomatic nuances, and contemporary slang, the film engages their critical thinking, cultural awareness, and conversational skills. This holistic approach aligns with established vocabulary acquisition theories, fostering vocabulary retention and promoting a deeper understanding of language nuances. Ultimately, the study underscores the significant role of multimedia entertainment, exemplified by "Toy Story I," in innovatively enhancing language learning strategies for educators, parents, and language development specialists seeking effective methods to elevate children's English proficiency.

Abstract

Many people do not speak English as their first language. It is possible that they perceive various sounds differently because the languages have different phonological features. This study is aimed to find out the process of phonological in mispronunciation and the factors of phonological that caused the mispronunciation. The elements of linguistics that being analyzed are the sounds in NCT Johnny’s vlogs named Shopping at IKEA & Assembling a Rack and 3rd Ep of Johnny’s Communication Center (JCC). The researcher collects the data by listening to all the conversations spoken by Johnny NCT in his YouTube vlogs videos. All of the words that are mispronounced are listed down and then being transcribed into phonetics transcriptions. the researcher found 25 data of mispronunciation words in Johnny's Communication Center (JCC) vlog. The type of mispronunciation words consists of  5 consonant’s mispronunciation and 20 vowels’ mispronunciation. There are three kinds of mispronunciation based on the phonological process, they are deletion, substitution, and insertion. Furthermore, based on the results of interviews conducted by researchers, four factors influence Johnny's pronunciation errors, namely mother tongue, exposure, language identity, and ego, as well as motivation and concern for sound pronunciation.

Abstract

Language style and language function have been the subject of substantial sociolinguistics research. The movie is one of the media utilized to analyze this point through characters. The main characters are the center of each movie’s constructed story. This study aims to identify the language style utilized by the main characters in The Menu movie, to identify the language function implemented through each style, and to determine which language style is used dominantly in the movie. This study employed a qualitative descriptive methodology. Language style and function are defined and identified using the theories of Martin Joos (1976) and Roman Jakobson (1980). The result revealed that the main characters employed the five categories identified by Martin Joos’ (1976) Language style theory: frozen style (9 data), formal style (18 data), consultative style (10 data), casual style (29 data), and intimate style (6 data). The data also revealed that the main characters made use of the six categories identified by Roman Jakobson (1980) in his theory of language function including referential function (24 data), emotional function (30 data), conative function (12 data), phatic function (8 data), metalingual function (4 data), and poetic function (4 data). The predominant language style is casual. Examining language style with different sources and theories can be done furthermore to fully comprehend the idea of language.

Abstract

To communicate effectively in a foreign language, such as English, a person must first become familiar with the vocabulary in that language. A lack of vocabulary will make it difficult for students to express their understanding and even their production. In the EFL classroom, several media have the potential to help students learn vocabulary, one of which is films with subtitles. The study aimed To explore the extent of students’ involvement in the process of learning vocabulary through the use of movies with subtitles as a medium and to explore student’ perceptions towards the use of subtitled movie as a medium for vocabulary learning. The research method is qualitative using case study design. The participant were 5 high school students in Bekasi. The analysis data used thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke. Research showed that using films with subtitles greatly influenced on how students learned vocabulary. While interactive media aided understanding, clearer instructions were necessary for some. Students actively engaged in discussions, showing enthusiasm. However, the speed of subtitles posed a comprehension challenge. Enhancements in instructions and subtitle speed were crucial for effective learning.

Abstract

Teachers are required to have the ability to manage the classroom so that the learning and teaching process can run conducively. However, research investigating classroom management is scarcely reported. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by Teacher Professional Education (PPG) program students and their perception after participating in the PPG program to their ailment in managing classrooms. The participants in this qualitative research were three PPG students from various universities in Indonesia. Open questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The findings show that there are three main challenges faced by PPG students, namely speaking to students and handling their responses, creating the setting, and communicating the rules to the students. Then, after they participate in the PPG program, they perceive that they are more communicative, innovative, creative, and more aware of students' needs.
