Abstract

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, associated with high morbidity and mortality. This review aims to evaluate the role of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis in the diagnosis and prognosis, particularly in relation to mortality, as well as in therapeutic monitoring of TBM. A narrative literature review was conducted using studies published between 2010 and 2025 on CSF parameters in TBM. Studies reporting associations between CSF biomarkers and clinical outcomes were included. Eighteen eligible studies were analyzed qualitatively. CSF analysis plays a critical role in classifying TBM as definite, probable, or possible according to the Lancet criteria. Elevated CSF protein (≥2 g/L) and reduced glucose (<2.2 mmol/L) levels are strongly associated with mortality, reflecting severe inflammation and blood-brain barrier dysfunction. Additional markers such as CSF lactate, inflammatory cytokines, and CRP further support prognostication. Serial measurements of CSF parameters aid in monitoring treatment response, especially in cases with atypical clinical progress. This review also highlights the diagnostic and monitoring roles of CSF parameters throughout the course of TBM. CSF biomarkers, especially protein and glucose levels, are key to assessing disease severity, predicting outcomes, and guiding treatment strategies in TBM. These findings support the integration of CSF analysis into routine clinical algorithms for managing this life-threatening condition. Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) remained a major public health issue in Semarang City, with 404 reported cases and 16 fatalities in 2023. To address this issue, the Wolbachia-based vector control program, WINGKO (Wolbachia Ing Kota Semarang), was introduced in 2023. However, public understanding of the program remained limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of WINGKOSmart, a digital education platform, in improving community knowledge of the Wolbachia program. A quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted from June to August 2025 in Muktiharjo Kidul Village, involving 30 purposively selected participants aged 18 to 59 years who were capable of using the internet. Data were collected using a validated 20-item questionnaire and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed significant improvement in respondents’ knowledge after the intervention (p < 0.05). The proportion of respondents in the “good” knowledge category increased across all subgroups, with younger respondents (87.5%), females (92%), high school graduates (91.3%), and unemployed participants (90%) demonstrating the greatest improvements, while the “poor” knowledge category was eliminated. The study concluded that WINGKOSmart effectively improved community knowledge of the Wolbachia program and has strong potential as a digital-based health promotion strategy to support dengue control efforts in Semarang City. Abstract

Acne vulgaris (AV) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that commonly affects adolescents and young adults. Medical students are particularly susceptible to AV because of the academic demands and psychological stress they experience. In addition to its physical manifestations, AV can negatively affect psychological and social aspects, potentially reducing quality of life. This study aimed to identify and analyze the correlation between the severity of AV and the quality of life of undergraduate medical students at Jenderal Achmad Yani University (Unjani) from the Class of 2023. This analytical study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 66 students were selected using consecutive sampling. The severity of acne vulgaris was assessed based on facial photographs evaluated by a dermatologist. Quality of life was measured using the Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. Most respondents had mild acne (65.2%) and reported mild impairment in quality of life (51%). The analysis revealed a significant strong positive correlation between acne severity and impairment of quality of life (p = 0.000; r = 0.764). Increased acne severity was associated with greater impairment of quality of life. These findings indicate that the more severe acne is associated with greater psychological and social disturbances. Abstract

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) can cause hearing loss and negatively affect children's growth and development. Many predisposing factors may influence the development of chronic suppurative otitis media. This condition can be prevented through appropriate preventive measures. This study aimed to determine the relationship between age, gender, and a history of recurrent acute otitis media (AOM) and the incidence of CSOM in children. This observational study used a case-control design. The study sample consisted of children aged 6 months to 18 years, selected through consecutive sampling, comprising 51 children with CSOM and 51 children without CSOM. Data were analyzed using the chi-square and Fisher’s exact test. The most common age group was 1-5 years, and the most common gender was female. Age and gender were not significantly associated with OMS (p = 0.227; OR = 1.630 and p = 0.843, OR = 1.082, respectively). In contrast, recurrent AOM was significantly associated with CSOM (p-value = 0.000 (<0.05); OR = 13.143). Thus, a history of recurrent AOM was identified as the most important factor associated with CSOM in this study, conferring a 13-fold higher risk. Abstract

Bay leaf (Syzygium polyanthum) is widely used in Indonesia as a traditional medicine. Despite its many pharmacological benefits, prolonged use at high doses can lead to toxic effects. Therefore, its safety should be evaluated through toxicity testing. This study aimed to evaluate lung histopathological changes in female DDY mice following subchronic administration of ethanolic bay leaf extract. This experimental study employed a post-test only control group design. Twenty-eight female DDY mice were divided into four groups and treated for 28 days. One control group and three treatment groups receiving ethanolic bay leaf extract (EEDS) orally at doses of 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg BW. Using Hematoxylin–Eosin (HE) staining, lung histopathology was examined semi-quantitatively based on the degree of inflammatory cell infiltration and alveolar septal damage under 400× magnification. The results of the study showed that subchronic administration of ethanolic bay leaf extract at all treatment doses did not produce significant differences in lung histopathology compared with the control group. The lung histopathological appearance across all groups was similar, with mild changes that remained within normal limits and did not indicate significant toxic effects. These findings may be attributed to the bioactive compounds present in bay leaves, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, polyphenols, essential oils, and vitamin C, which exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. In conclusion, the administration of ethanolic bay leaf extract at doses of up to 1000 mg/kg BW during the subchronic period appears to be relatively safe for the lungs of female DDY mice. Abstract

Dry eye syndrome is a multifactorial condition affecting the ocular surface and is characterized by disruption of tear film homeostasis, inflammation, ocular surface damage, discomfort, and visual disturbances. Its severity is classified as mild, moderate, or severe. One contributing factor is prolonged use of Visual Display Terminals (VDTs), which are electronic devices used to display information. VDT use is categorized as < 3 hours and ≥ 3 hours per day. This study aimed to examine the relationship between VDT use duration and dry eye syndrome among medical students at Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta. Primary data for this cross-sectional study were obtained from the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire and a questionnaire assessing computer use. The sample consisted of 223 medical students who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of the 223 respondents, 156 (70%) were female. Severe dry eye syndrome was identified in 112 respondents (50.2%), and blurred vision was the most frequently reported symptom, occurring in 49 respondents (21.9%). Most respondents (94.6%) used VDTs ≥ 3 hours per day. Data analysis demonstrated that VDT use duration was significantly associated with dry eye syndrome (p = 0.009 (p < 0.05)). Participants who used VDTs for ≥3 hours per day had a 1.53-fold higher risk of developing dry eye syndrome than those who used VDTs for <3 hours per day. Abstract

Menopause is a natural biological transition that typically occurs between 45 and 55 years of age and is often accompanied by somatic, psychological, and urogenital symptoms that may affect quality of life and work performance. Healthcare workers may be particularly vulnerable due to occupational stress and high physical and emotional demands. This descriptive cross-sectional study aimed to describe the profile of menopausal symptoms among nurses and midwives working in IRNA 3 at Dr. Saiful Anwar General Hospital, East Java, and was conducted from February to April 2025 using the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS). Of the 213 questionnaires collected, 121 eligible nurses and midwives aged 40–60 years were included after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a demographic questionnaire and the validated Indonesian version of the MRS. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed. The mean age of participants was 46.94 ± 4.27 years. Most respondents were midwives (56.2%) and married (89.3%). Somatic and psychological symptoms were predominantly mild to moderate. The most frequently reported symptoms were joint and muscle pain, sleep disturbances, physical and mental exhaustion, and irritability. Hot flashes were commonly reported but less frequent than musculoskeletal and psychological complaints. Most participants reported no sexual problems, although moderate to severe vaginal dryness was relatively common. Menopausal symptoms among nurses and midwives were predominantly somatic and psychological in nature. Workplace monitoring and targeted support strategies are needed to maintain quality of life and professional performance during the menopausal transition. Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major global health concern with increasing prevalence rates and is often accompanied by gastroparesis, a disorder that affects gastric motility and negatively impacts diabetes control. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and severity of gastroparesis symptoms among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the area served by Waled Cirebon General Hospital. This cross-sectional observational study recruited 96 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who met the selection criteria between May and June 2025. Gastroparesis symptoms were assessed using the validated Gastroparesis Cardinal Symptom Index questionnaire . Data were collected through structured interviews and review of existing medical records. Statistical analyses included univariate descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses using Spearman’s correlation test and the Chi-square test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The severity of gastroparesis symptoms was classified as severe in 43.8% of participants, moderate in 24.0%, and mild in 32.3%. The results revealed that significant associations existed between the severity of gastroparesis symptoms and age (r = 0.354, p = 0.001), gender (p < 0.001), duration of diabetes (r = 0.535, p = 0.001), blood glucose control, (r = 0.379, p = 0.001), smoking (r = 0.636, p = 0.001), and body mass index. The prevalence of severe gastroparesis symptoms in this population exceeded reported global rates. All identified risk factors were signicantly associated with symptom severity, with obesity and smoking showing the strongest association. This study highlights the importance of optimal diabetes control involving several modifiable risk factors, proper screening for gastroparesis, and appropriate intervention among the high-risk population. Abstract

LBP (Low Back Pain) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder in adults, affecting up to 84% of the population. The Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, reported that approximately 60-80% of individuals worldwide experienced at least one episode of LBP during their lifetime. This study aims to evaluate the influence of excessive lifting, age, and job tenure on the incidence of LBP and its associated disability levels (mild, moderate, and severe) among market porters. The research method used is an observational analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 42 male porters who met the inclusion criteria: actively lifting loads greater than 15 kg without equipment, aged 20-60 years, and having a Body Mass Index ≤ 25. Data were collected using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaire and analyzed through the the chi-square and logistic regression tests. The results showed that age had a significant effect on the incidence of LBP (p = 0.000), while job tenure and load weight did not (p > 0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that age contributed 61.5% to the incidence of LBP, while job tenure and load weight only contributed 5.9% . In conclusion, although excessive lifting and job tenure positively correlate with the incidence of LBP among porters at the Cimahi Antri Market, these effects are not statistically significant, leaving age is the primary significant determinant.
