Abstract

The Chinese television historical drama has attracted world attention. Langya Bang is a successful television drama serial that is considered a social media phenomenon. This research was conducted to explore the heroic aspects of Mei Changsu based on the concept of heroism according to the Confucian teaching. This qualitative descriptive research used John Fiske’s television semiotics method that consisted of three levels: reality level, representation level and ideology level. The results show that at reality level analysis, looking from clothing, appearance, way of speaking, behavior, body movement, expression and environment codes, we can conclude that the protagonist Mei Changsu was represented as a warrior, a scholar and a prince, and can also be considered as a Junzi or a superhero figure with the concept of wen-wu who internalized the virtues in the Confucian teaching. At the representation level, the technical and conventional codes represent the five Confucian ethics are reflected through camera, lighting, music, and audio aspects and at ideology level we can conclude collectivism ideology and patriarchal leadership. Through a semiotic meaning study and the use of television code, we can understand that the television media Langya Bang is the medium to promote traditional Chinese culture and also indirect way to understand the Confucian teaching, in this case is about Confucian ideal of cultivating individual and responsible leader, who devoted to rules for the benefit of society. The representation of Confucianism in the storyline of Langya Bang is important in legalizing the unity of culture, that is Chinese culture.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the student community's resistance to developing geothermal power plants (in Indonesia, referred to as Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Panas Bumi, abbreviated as PLTP), analyze movement patterns, and assess the resistance movement's challenges. This study used qualitative research methods. Data were collected by interview, observation, and document study. According to the study's findings, the rejection movement began with local media coverage of police officers' coercive tactics to secure the activities of corporations conducting preliminary research at the project site. The student community perceives PLTP development activities as environmental injustice, even though the projects are ostensibly environmentally friendly. Patterns of rejection movements are carried out in three ways: 1) Disseminating information; 2) Employing provocative tactics (delivering criticism of environmental injustice and police repression through performing arts such as theatre, murals, short monologues, and poetry readings); and 3) Mobilizing public support (through campaigns in public spaces and using social media, to campaign for the potential impact of PLTP development). The roots of rejection are typically minimal because there is no apparent conflict of interest between students and the PLTP development business (in contrast to the local community as the affected party).

Abstract

Illegal logging has damaged the ecosystem of Meru Betiri National Park (henceforth defined as TNBM), as indicated by the loss of water sources and the destruction of the forest. As citizens around the forest, hardly can women do anything to address the problem, except see the ongoing forest destruction. This study scrutinizes women's perceptions of deforestation in Meru Betiri National Park. Women have limited access to TNMB management, making women the most disadvantaged due to forest destruction. This research aims to investigate women’s perceptions of deforestation in the national park through a phenomenological approach. Documentation and interviews were involved in data collection. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted descriptively. This study found that pessimism and powerlessness colored women's perception of the forest. Empty and infertile, without water sources and animals represent ironic women's subjective perception. The dominant patriarchal structure, corrupt forest management, and the view of illegal logging as a way of survival have reflected women's perceptions of TNMB deforestation.

Abstract

In the buildup of 2019 general election in Nigeria, there were tensions in the Southeastern part of the country over the clamours for election boycott campaign initiated by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, requesting that a referendum should hold in the region for the purpose of secession rather than conduct an election in the area. This drew critical attention nationwide and in diaspora as some rose to condemn the call while some supported the move. Few days to the election, the polity was heated up as to whether the Southeasterners will heed the clarion call to boycott the election or not with the IPOB foot soldiers on ground driving the campaign and threating mayhem to anyone who come out to vote until the “Supreme Leader” of IPOB called off the election boycott 24 hours to the election and there was total compliance and suspension of the campaign in the region. This could not have been possible without the effectiveness of Radio Biafra Internet broadcasting. How this Internet radio station was effective in the mobilization of members of IPOB to drive the “No Referendum, No Election” campaign is the focus of this study.  Anchored on Technological Determinism theory, survey method was used to carry out the study with a population of 803,416 and a sample size of 382 listeners in Anambra and Abia States as respondents drawn using Krejcie and Morgan Sample Size Determination Table. The findings revealed that people were highly exposed to Radio Biafra No Referendum; No Election Campaign through Internet broadcasting on Facebook, Word of Mouth and Radio Biafra Terrestrial Broadcasting and this influenced their attitude toward 2019 election resulting to voter apathy in the area. Based on the findings, the researchers therefore, recommend that Radio Biafra should engage their digital broadcasting for national cohesion and integration rather than preach the message of secession disintegration
