Abstract

The issue of culture, tradition, and its unassailable conflict with modernity in certain parts of Africa, as obvious in several communities in Nigeria, is a challenge that affects our social development today. As it is often echoed; “it’s a man’s world”, most times women fall victim of these long-held traditions that have over time become canons we hold dear. The glib dispositions of these practices situate patriarchy at the epicenter of societal construction and places women on us, the fringes, mostly becoming unwilling casualties of unfriendly traditions. Thus, this paper examines how tradition and its attendant problems impede on the social standing and general development of the woman in society using Tess Osonye Onwueme’s play ‘The Broken Calabash”. Using the thematic content analysis approach the paper explored the potential conflict between tradition and modernity, the paper interrogates Broken Calabash as a reflection of women’s subjugation by obsolete cultural traditions, presenting alongside this, the consequences of social exclusion and the denial of rights experienced by women. The paper concludes that the dramatic experience presented by Tess Osonye Onwueme reveals the intricate relations between tradition and modernity as a potent means for the reading and understanding of texts depicting gender relations.

Abstract

Brexit phenomenon and Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election in 2016 simultaneously sent a signal of the populism movement spreading throughout the world. In Indonesia indeed, Jakarta gubernatorial election stimulated the heat of Indonesian political atmosphere after the Qur'an blasphemy scandal of the incumbent Governor ‘Ahok’ that eventually triggered the biggest demonstration in Indonesian Islamic history namely the 212 Demonstration. This research aims to describe the news coverage of the 212 Demonstration from news agencies belong to the Greatpowers, such as VOA, Sputnik, Xinhua, Deutsche Welle, and BBC by using the documentation method and content analysis. This research found that the Greatpowers’ news agencies framed the 212 Demonstration as an extraordinary event and political strategy of anti-government politicians to gain a short-term benefit. Surprisingly, there was not any Greatpower's media that framed the Islamic populism event of the 212 Demonstration as purely religious movement.

Abstract

Community participation in the government budgeting process provides opportunities for wider and deeper public participation. This paper uses a systematic literature review method with a meta-synthetic approach that aims to examine the practice of participatory budgeting (PB) in Indonesia by comparing PB programs in the early reform era with PB programs in the reform era. The results show that the PB model in the early era of World Bank-sponsored reforms such as the Musrenbang (PNPM and KDP) is a technocratic administrative policy innovation because it has standard rules, innovation comes from the government and the community becomes the object of government policy. In addition, this study also finds that Prodamas indirectly strengthens Musrenbang because of its participation at the RT level. People at the lowest level are encouraged to participate more. Therefore, the researcher hopes that Regional Regulations have greater power.

Abstract

The development of technology and social media today is like a double edged knife. On the other hand, it provides many conveniences and innovations, but on the other hand it also has a negative impact, especially for users who are adolescent. The content and access presented in social media can actually trigger the birth of a private Post a Picture (PAP) area. In addition, at the age of adolescence, the development of sexuality, both physically and sexually, is taking place, coupled with the existence of special relationships between adolescents, making the barrier between private and public spaces a common thing. Through access to various chat media applications, this is the beginning of the phenomenon of post a picture photos or videos in this private area. There are two motives for adolescent to post a picture in a private area, namely the motive for sharing voluntarily and the motive for coercion. This phenomenon is a form of cyber deviance because it leads to virtual harassment in the digital space. This study uses a quantitative research approach with survey methods and uses explanatory analysis techniques. Therefore, this study aims to show the extent to which adolescent understand cyber crime and cyber deviance through the phenomenon of Post a Picture (PAP) in the private area. The results of this study indicate that what causes this phenomenon to occur is because there are several contributing factors including a lack of understanding of values and norms, as well as religious observance. In addition, this study also shows that there is a adolescents’s view that private PAP is a deviant act but is mostly done by them. This article is expected to be a stimulus and awareness to the public, especially adolescent, that this phenomenon requires holistic reinforcement so that this phenomenon can be handled optimally.

Abstract

This study explored men's perception of women's participation and VAW (Violence against women) on an online learning platform called "Hallo." Based on the analysis of in-depth interviewed data collected from male users of the application, the study found that men hold an egalitarian view in respect of the participation of their female counterparts. Though most men perceived the platform as a tool for women's empowerment through educative elements, exchange of knowledge, language learning opportunities, and development of communication skills, they did not fail to give proper attention to women's safety on this digital podium. Emphasis was given to women's 'self-responsibility' and 'awareness' to handle violence perpetrated by male users against them. Primarily, cultural and religious boundaries, strengthened by patriarchy, were marked as leading determiners of women's communication leeway in the learning space. Besides that, the normalization of violence was found justified by divergent labels such as 'mere amusement,' 'right to freedom of expression,' or 'temporary moral shift.' Moreover, the study discovered that women of Asian and Arab origins get victimized specifically for their stereotypical feminine temperament. At the same time, rude talking patterns, fame motives, or dating intentions are considered liable for violence against women regardless of their race, color, creed, or location.
