Abstract

This research aims to discuss the disaster narration during the PPKM period on the Bantul Regency's social media. This research uses the qualitative method from interviews and social media data analyzed by the Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDS). The data were showcased in crosstab analysis and word cloud analysis. The result shows that 1 Bantul District has succeeded in building a community understanding of crises rather than increasing the reputation of actors. The narrative built through crisis knowledge created by the Regional Disaster Relief Agency (BPBD) Bantul Data and Information Center (Pusdalops) needs to be better informed. 2) Then, in the social media dimension of Twitter, COVID-19 data is only presented with updates without showing collaboration between actors. 3) public interaction on BPBD Bantul's Twitter social media was primarily positive, with 63% (supporting all parties in tackling COVID-19), damaging 21% (distrust in COVID-19 data), and neutral 11% (impartial). In word cloud analysis, the dominance of words often used as narratives is Bantul with 31 counts, followed by data, COVID-19, district PPKM, etc.

Abstract

This article illustrates how the YouTube platform, particularly the Muslimah Media Center channel of Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia, has become the main platform for spreading anti-feminist narratives that relegate women to domestic roles. In the context of Indonesia's predominantly Muslim society, this narrative interprets feminism as a threat to Islam, creating tension between traditional values and social change. This article analyzes how the language, symbolism, and narratives used in Muslimah Media Center's YouTube content can influence perceptions and expectations of women in society. While there are diverse views within the platform, there are concerns that narratives that promote the "domestication" of women may reinforce gender stereotypes that disadvantage women in various aspects of life. This article asks important questions about the extent to which these Muslim women have the freedom to shape their own identities on and off these platforms, as well as how they cope with the social pressures and expectations that may be imposed on them. Using discourse analysis provides insights into the role of social media in influencing gender norms and opens up space for reflection and discussion on its impact on social and gender change in societies affected by religious and cultural values.

Abstract

Nigeria's film industry had a significant year in 1992. Since then, numerous films have faced criticism for promoting negative behavior and attitudes. However, this study challenges those claims, demonstrating that Nollywood films can promote positive attitudes and sustainable development. The study analyzed two films: Daybreak in Udi and Nigeria: A Squandering of Riches. To achieve this goal, Nollywood is expected to facilitate the needed development through productions aimed at persuading the people to adopt values that enhance a better life and motivate them to greater heights in development. To this end, it was advanced that there was a need for Nollywood to revisit the changing prism by making significant films geared towards social and cultural reorientation leading to sustainable national development rather than placing undue emphasis on entertainment value and box office returns. The study appealed to the government at all levels and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to come to the aid of the film industry to enable it to play this significant role.

Abstract

Flood is a hydrometeorological disaster whose intensity and geographic scope continue to increase due to climate change, global warming, and lack of environmental management. Floods often need to be better managed through policy implementation and communication. This study reviews the communication of public policies for flood management. This review uses a traditional approach by referring to previous publications from articles and books, whereas analysis and synthesis refer to the qualitative methods. Public policy must pay attention to fairness, transparency, accountability, participation, and accommodating all parties' interests. The implementation for flood disasters needs to consider elements, the existing programs, and target groups that will receive policies. Flood disaster communication has principles such as transparency, responsiveness, efficiency, effectiveness, accountability, participation, measurement, fairness, and environmental sustainability. Effective and timely communication is very important in dealing with disasters because it can help reduce losses and increase community preparedness. The infrastructure system, which includes drainage, reservoir management, water infiltration zones (green space and densely vegetated land), and mapping of flood-prone areas, must also be communicated adequately. Flood management requires adequate public communication, thus the policy synchronization between different institutions and regions to address socioeconomics and environmental interests within a participatory-based flood management framework

Abstract

This paper has three critical purposes. Firstly, to describe the content and activities presented by the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram account as an attempt to enrich our understanding of sociology. Secondly, to explain the shape of the Instagram account strategy for building sociological imagination. Thirdly, to illustrate the sociological analysis of learning sociology based on the Instagram platform using Wright C Mills' thinking about sociological imagining. A qualitative approach with case study methods was used for research, and data was collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and online documentation. The results of this paper show that the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram account has a variety of content and activities consisting of writing spaces, discussions, and information activities that improve sociological understanding, academic and soft skills, and critical thinking. In the context of sociology learning, such an increased capacity makes sociology a fascinating and easier-to-understand discipline with popular learning formats. The various content and activities on the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram platform are part of building sociological imagination that helps students link situations and social structures with their personal experiences.  This process also trains and stimulates students to reflect on the social world with sociological concepts

Abstract

Bumble and Tinder are dating apps for those who struggle with online dating-based romance. They allow you to share personal data through a smartphone application, without the need for direct conversation. This study aims to explain the phenomenon of online dating with Dating Apps and the meaning of using Dating Apps Bumble and Tinder from the perspective of Computer-Mediated Communication and Coordinated Management of Meaning. The basic concepts used in this research are the theory of Computer-Mediated Communication from Joseph Walther and the Coordinated Management of Meaning from W. B Pearce and V Cronin. In this qualitative research, informants are determined using purposive sampling and participant observation. The data collection techniques used in this study were observations and interviews with six women and three men who were active users of Bumble and Tinder. The results of this research show a pattern of gender relations in the use of the Bumble or Tinder applications. Bumble gives women more control over relationship development or termination compared to Tinder. The shared meaning of "dating" sustains gender relations, built through communication, relationships, and culture. Online dating prioritizes selective self-presentation to create a favorable impression on the partner.

Abstract

This study analyzed beauty myths on Instagram accounts of three aesthetic clinics in Indonesia using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis. Results showed that First, the women were characterized as an object and became the victims, and beauty standards were reconstructed and reproduced by the subjects, namely the Instagram accounts of @dermaster_id, @ertosbeautyclinic, and @natashaskincare aesthetic clinics. Women objectification could not be separated from the existing beauty myth. Second, there were two categories of beauty representations formed in the three Instagram accounts, namely men's beauty representation that consisted of smooth faces, young looks, and firm jaws, and women's beauty representations that consisted of thin cheeks, firm jaw, firm skin, smooth, acne-free, attractive skin, glass skin, and slim, and halal beauty. The study is expected to enrich the repertoire of social science, especially sociology, and develop research on the sociology of the body, feminism study, and the sociology of gender and media.

Abstract

This paper explores the relationship between mass media and its audience, specifically in Nigeria where this field is under-studied. Since its debut in 1959 as a medium of domestic entertainment, television in Nigeria has been a wonderland for new vistas and foreign and strange concepts that became trendsetters for viewers’ astonishment and enthusiastic lifestyle emulation. This study uses qualitative methods, including Key Informant Interviews and secondary analysis, to explore cross-dressing as a cultural phenomenon. The theoretical framework is based on the gratification and technological determinism theories. The study examines how technological advancements have enabled the normalization of "sophisticated, imported" options in entertainment culture. The paper explores gender fluidity and identity blurring in the artist's perception. The findings showed that the incursion of technology, especially television and its more sophisticated variant, social media, are the purveyors of democratized ideas of individual identity and blurred sexuality profiling that disrupted existentialist binary notions. The study results also showed that cross-dressing, as employed in skit-making, has earned respect on the employment index of the creative sector and art community. Tech shapes youth culture, paving the way for new norms in human relationships and personal expression

Abstract

Regional autonomy, or regional financial capacity, is an indicator used to assess the level of regional autonomy as one of the requirements for financing public services and development. The government's function will not be practical unless it receives maximal budget assistance; the government must have adequate local sources of revenue. This research aims to examine the diversity of regional financial capacity levels and their implications for the sustainability of regional autonomy from the perspective of community interests. This research method utilized multivariate statistics, profile analysis, and variance analysis. Data related to locally generated income, total regional income, total routine expenditure, and fund balance during 2013–2017 were analyzed and compared to assess the level of autonomy. In Lampung Province, 14 regional governments showed low levels of fiscal autonomy, routine expenditure index, and regional financial capacity. These regions were highly dependent on central government assistance through intergovernmental transfers. Between 2013 and 2017, only Bandar Lampung City and Metro City saw an increase in Local Government Revenue (PAD). Other regions stagnated, indicating low financial autonomy in the future due to fund transfers. This makes it difficult to meet public satisfaction levels in infrastructure, health, education, and social development due to budget limitations.
