Abstract

The media became a strong driver of either reliable information or misinformation. The trends of issues during the pandemic indicate that media has been targeted by global health authorities, national governments, and health agencies, among other developmental vital stakeholders, in mobilizing the public at all levels to communicate the preventive measures, symptoms, and non-surgical and hygiene practices that would help in stemming the spread of the virus. The paper indicates that knowledge plays a significant role in driving public health practices. Another critical role the media plays in influencing public perception, opinions, attitudes, and behaviors during the peak of the public health emergency. Media also performed the responsibility of being the watchdog of society through consistent follow-ups on contact tracing, daily broadcasts of the infected, recoveries, and fatalities in different countries across the globe, including Nigeria. The paper recommends that the media should be more watchful in the information they disseminate to the public to avoid jeopardizing the primary aim of reducing people's uncertainty. This can be done by controlling information overload by deploying more instruments of gatekeeping to titrate the kinds of information they send through their channels

Abstract

The study aims at describing teacher immediacy within online learning. Teacher immediacy refers to using verbal and nonverbal symbols to reduce physical and psychological gaps between teachers and students. Immediacy is claimed to improve student motivation in learning. The study employed a mixed method of focus group discussions and a survey of selected senior high schools from multistage random sampling. Results show that perceived online learning is identical to incomprehensible, overload assignments, a shift of the teacher’s role to technology, peer learning, and off-class tutorial participation. On the other hand, online learning is perceived as flexibility in time as students can manage different activities simultaneously. Findings from the survey indicate immediacy negatively influences a shift in teachers’ role to technology, whereas self-disclosure has a positive effect. The results somehow reflect a debatable claim of teacher immediacy impact within the Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) context. Future examinations on the use of multiple technology platforms in forming immediacy are necessary to better comprehend the teacher’s role in online learning

Abstract

The role of civil society power in the history of reform in Indonesia cannot be underestimated because the economic crisis did not solely cause the fall of Suharto's New Order regime. Still, the role of civil society forces was very large and well consolidated. This study used qualitative research. The theory used is the theory of power relations. The results of the study found that in the era of Soeharto's New Order, the relationship between the state and civil society was still not seen to play its role; it can even be said that the existence of civil society was very weak and weakened by the regime, although at the end of the New Order, civil society was well consolidated which eventually gave birth to the reform movement and was able to overthrow Suharto's regime. The results also found that, after the reformation in Indonesia, the civil society movement experienced a golden age at the beginning of the reform because the position of civil society was quite strong and well consolidated in overseeing the course of the democratic system. However, in recent years civil society movements have stagnated and even seem weakened because they are in the circle of power.

Abstract

Communication requires attention to honesty and trust. Communicators must have credibility that can be trusted. The speech will be rewarded if it matches the action. The discrepancy between speech and implementation action will only make a speech as lip service. This research aims to identify lip service from President Jokowi and reveal its context. This intertwined reading of the text and context will provide a comprehensive understanding of President Jokowi's lip service communication as well as an understanding of why this lip service communication occurred. This research uses the Political Discourse Analysis (PDA) method. PDA method analyzes Jokowi's lip service texts and contexts: the permissibility of demonstrations, KPK law revision, call for more criticism, and TWK for KPK employees. It has been observed that President Jokowi engages in lip service communication when the topic of discussion revolves around two key discourses: fundamental democratic values and anti-corruption measures. The research findings suggest that such communication is employed to politicize these discourses and maintain President Jokowi's image as a democratic and anti-corruption leader

Abstract

This study explored the use of social media for decision-making during politics in a multicultural society. The study was anchored on the public sphere theory and was guided by three research objectives, which are to probe the role of social media in building an inclusive society, investigate the role of social media in making an informed citizenry that deepens democracy, and identify the challenges that confront the practice of social media in a multicultural society. The study adopted a qualitative approach where secondary data from extant empirical studies were collated, presented, and analyzed. The study's findings revealed that using social media platforms is a veritable tool to adopt during politics and that these platforms influence citizens' political decisions. However, the study's findings also revealed that social media faces challenges during politicking, especially in a multicultural society like Nigeria. Some of the identified challenges include the proliferation of misinformation, fake news, and hate speech, among other forms of practices that are damaging to a multicultural and democratic society. The paper, therefore, recommends, among other things, that there is a swift need for stakeholders and other relevant government agencies to educate netizens on the dangers of using social media adversely during politics

Abstract

The Internet impacts students' lives and career paths. Excessive use may correlate with tobacco and alcohol consumption despite its benefits. The present study aimed to identify the relationship between gratification of Internet usage, problems in Internet usage, alcohol consumption, and drug abuse among Malaysian youth. The quantitative method was applied by using a survey questionnaire. A total of 440 students from the University Putra Malaysia (32.3% males, 67.7% females) were selected using a stratified random sampling method. The majority of the respondents (93.2%) were single. The students ranged from 23 to 40, with the majority of the younger group (78.3%) in the age range of 18-23. No link was found between Internet use gratification and alcohol/drug usage. No correlation was found between the Internet, alcohol, and drug problems. The association between age and alcohol usage was not significant. However, this relationship for drug abuse was substantial and positive. No significant differences were found in the mean values for the respondents' fields of study and alcohol or drug usage. The findings of the independent t-test illustrated that there were significant differences between marital status and alcohol consumption. Still, there were no significant mean differences between marital status and drug usage.
