Abstract

The study aims to explore the actors' conceptions of the digitalization of public services through their experiences, perceptions, and understanding, which are not widely disclosed in research. These actors include the government as a service provider and users, as well as business actors and academicians. In principle, the sustainability of the digitalization of public services will be primarily determined by the participation and support of its users or citizens. The study used Phenomenography and interviewed eight informants, including three government officials, a citizen, an academic, and three business people, in Yogyakarta. The city introduced the JSS (Jogya Smart Service) one-door digital platform for public services in 2018. Data collection was conducted with interviews. The study revealed that actors had varying conceptions about the digitalization of public services. These differences were related to media use, advantages and challenges, and stakeholder engagement. Each perception had sub-perceptions, with public information digitalization having the most. The number of variations in the sub-conceptions indicates that each informant has a diverse perception and positive experiences related to implementing JSS. The outcome space demonstrated that digitalizing public services entails three understandings: new skills required, technological implications, co-production, and shared values.

Abstract

This study examines how the Point News Media portrayed the ECOWAS military intervention in The Gambia. ECOWAS intervened when former President Yahya Jammeh refused to step down after losing the 2016 election. Scholars and the media worldwide discussed the intervention's legality and legitimacy in promoting the democratic transfer of power in the region. Initially, the intervention was praised for successfully promoting democratic change in a region that is prone to coups. However, the public later requested the withdrawal of the intervention force. The study analyzed 64 news articles published between 2017 and 2023. Ten frames were identified: dissatisfaction, ECOMIG mandate, ECOMIG success, instability, legitimacy, reassurance, social service, support, uncertainty, and confrontation. The Point news media portrayed the intervention negatively, characterized by dissatisfaction and confrontation in implementing the intervention's mandate. This negative depiction may have contributed to the shift in public discourse towards requesting the ECOWAS military withdrawal. The study used qualitative content analysis as a data gathering and analysis method to explore the portrayal of the intervention. This method allowed the researchers to identify the different frames used to depict the intervention. By presenting the findings in simple language, the study increases accessibility and understanding of the topic.

Abstract

This study aims to see the role of digital media in determining the direction of democracy and public opinion. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with case studies in Indonesia and unit analysis using Nvivo 12 Plus software, which is analyzed with Computer Assistant Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDS) and crosstab. The urgency of the media as an essential actor in democracy is because it can present broad information, active participation, responsiveness, and diversification of perspectives that shape public opinion. The results of this study show that there are three important points. 1) Digital media is able to create spaces for democratic actors in various sectors then, 2) Digital media is an informative and participatory domain, and the last is 3) Digital media is a supervisor of democracy in Indonesia; criticism suggestions and evaluations are straightforward to do by several actors in it. The media is responsible for ensuring the continuity of a healthy democracy. We need cooperation among governments, the private sector, and civil society to support democratic values in media. Criticism, literacy, and active public participation on social media are crucial for maintaining democracy in the digital era.

Abstract

Many societies, including those in the Philippines, subscribe to the traditional concept that the father's essential responsibilities are being the provider and protector of his family. In Filipino parenting, fathers are providers for the family's economic needs while mothers are responsible for nurturing. More women are migrating to work abroad, leaving fathers to assume all primary parenting roles as providers, protectors, and nurturers. This has created a new family dynamic in recent years. This research paper explores Filipino fathers' experiences with a wife working abroad. Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the researcher interviewed some employed fathers to reveal how they accepted, adapted, and made sense of the family set up as they simultaneously fulfilled the roles of both the father and mother to their children. Research revealed that when the mother left to work abroad, the father embraced their role in caring for their children. Filipino fathers are open to reversing traditional parenting roles. Although some fathers still let their wives take care of the children, many have become the primary caregivers. Parenting alone has helped them understand the importance of being involved in their children's upbringing

Abstract

This paper examines how a particular cultural product (cuisine) from a demographically minority ethnic group is transformed in a multicultural social setting. The expanding process of commodification and the development of the urban culinary industry, supported by innovations in digital technology and media, provide opportunities for ethnic cuisines to compete with other culinary traditions. This research aims to determine how the cultural identity embedded in specific cuisines is built in the culinary market and how the intrinsic value of ethnic culinary traditions is transformed in multiethnic societies. The theory used is food culture and food habits. (Foster and Anderson 1978; Jerome, Kandel, and Pelto 1980). This study used qualitative research methods with an ethnographic approach.  Data was collected through interviews, observations, and the author's participant observation as a citizen of the city under study. The study found that togetherness is an intrinsic value of Lampung's seruit commensality that is adaptive amidst socio-cultural transformation into a multicultural society. Seruit becomes an arena for constructing Lampungnese during a multiethnic urban society and growing commercial economy. Sharing meals (seruit commensality) can promote harmony among Lampung's urban ethnic groups. Mass and digital media have transformed Lampung's identity

Abstract

This article identifies cyberspace as an alternate theatre environment for audiences to see performances.  There is no doubt that the internet has had a tremendous influence on human society; the interconnectedness and easy access to information and resources which it enables is a testament to this. Theatre artists have recently tapped into cyberspace to create content for an expanding online audience. This article explores how performance can enhance children's theatre in this digital space. It examines the concept of children’s theatre and defines children-centered online content as performance. The article broadens the definition of "liveness" in cyberformance to include not just live events but also pre-recorded content that engages viewers continuously. It analyzes three videos from Janelle and Joella, two sisters addressing children's issues online. This content is positioned within the framework of children-for-adult children’s theatre and identified as cyberformance. It highlights the videos' themes and presentation styles as exemplary of children’s theatre. Also, the attributes of performance, which are interconnectedness, liveness, and engagement, were established within the Janelle and Joella children’s theatre paradigm. The article concludes on the note that cyberformance offers a veritable platform for the continuous exploration of theatre.

Abstract

The killing of a human being by his or her fellow beats rational imagination. It becomes extremely difficult to comprehend the rationale that makes individuals become deliberately responsible for the death of their kind. Murder is a baffling issue that poses a significant threat to humanity and highlights the challenges to civilization and societal development. Its ongoing presence questions the overall health of any society. This paper examines the reasons murderers in prisons provide for their actions, using strain and social disorganization theories as a framework. Semi-structured questionnaires were given to 615 convicted violent offenders in four Niger State prisons, selected through a multi-stage sampling technique. Additionally, sixteen prison warders were interviewed for further insights. The findings indicate that low income (P= .934) was not statistically significant at (P= 0.05) level of significance for the explanation of murder unless redolent with peer pressure (p= 0.02). Special loan packages and partnerships for and between members of the community are suggested to be instituted and encouraged to reduce the pangs of hard economic situations and lack of social capital, which are also potent factors for the explanation of murder.

Abstract

The poor justice system in the Philippines intensifies poverty among underprivileged people. It leaves them with no choice but to handle conflicts through Trial by Publicity or go to radio or TV stations and programs for their brawls to broadcast. The belief that immediate justice will be served made these Filipinos continuously choose these avenues to resolve disputes. This quantitative study uses the descriptive-evaluative method since this study assessed the perspectives to trial by publicity among barangay citizens, officials, and media practitioners. This study surveyed 270 respondents composed of barangay constituents and officials from the three identified barangays of Naga and media practitioners. Results showed that the barangay citizens, officials, and media practitioners are highly aware of trial by publicity regarding objectives, procedure, and judgment. It was also concluded that the trial by publicity is irrefutably one way of influencing the public through media by catching the audience’s attention, giving them what they want to be sure of without in-depth analysis and exploration.

Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomena of social criticism and cancel culture in the context of the Gisella Anastasia sex scandal, focusing on analyzing netizen comments on YouTube news channels. Foucault's discourse analysis is used to explore how comments reflect power dynamics on social media. These comments fall into four categories: social media shaming, slut-shaming, redemption support, and superficial praise. The research findings show mixed reactions from netizens about the Gisella Anastasia scandal, with social media backlash and slut shaming highlighting strong criticism of her behavior. On the other hand, redemption support illustrates support and forgiveness towards the celebrity's efforts to amend their actions following clarification or apologies. Shallow praise focuses on compliments that are not related to the main issue. The research reveals that social media shaming and slut shaming are the primary comment categories. Using a Foucauldian approach, it examines how these comments reflect systems of discipline and punishment, highlighting the complexities of cancel culture and its impact on interpretation and judgment in the social media age.. The analysis of netizen comments provides insights into how power and social control are manifested in online interactions and their implications on the reputation and public perception of celebrities.
