Abstract

President Joko Widodo stated that in 2045, Generation Z (gen-Z) will change the face of Indonesian politics. The demographics of Generation Z in significant numbers will influence the direction of Indonesian politics due to their ability to control election votes. Gen-Z, which has grown up with the development of technology and is vulnerable to the impact of misinformation, disinformation, and misinformation, must be strengthened through political education. For this goal, parties and KPU need to devise new strategies for younger generations. Data was collected from political party leaders and KPU commissioners in West Java through questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The results show that Gen-Z West Java is an active social media user, the time spent every day is on average above four hours (46.2%), with the choice of the top four platforms, WhatsApp (94.2%), Instagram (89.7%), Youtube (69.9%), Tiktok (66.7%) and Facebook (44.8%). Gen-Z prefers research, podcasts, memes, and political humor for political communication. However, regional KPU staff and political parties struggle to meet their needs for voter education mediaApproximately 80% of Gen-Z in West Java plan to vote in the 2024 elections. KPU and political parties need skilled Content Creators to engage Gen-Z and encourage their participation in elections.

Abstract

The subject of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in Nigeria emerged with various misrepresentations and conspiracy theories, such as the notion of COVID-19 as a forerunner of the Anti-Christ or the commencement of a 'New World Order' occasioned by the 5G network. COVID-19 information in Nigeria was managed by the Presidential Task Force through daily media briefings. This paper examined the PTF's information dissemination structure and its impact on four indigenous communities in south-eastern Nigeria: Ikwo in Ebonyi State, Iva-Valley Forestry Hill Camp 1 in Enugu State, Umualumu Old Road in Imo State, and Ogbagu Obukpa in Enugu State. TfD was used during lockdown to inform indigenous communities and promote necessary health precautions. The project used TfD and Brecht's Epic Theatre Theory in 4 Nigerian communities to show how TfD can complement other media in informing rural residents about COVID-19. TfD mobilized indigenous communities in southeastern Nigeria to understand Igbo and take COVID-19 precautions despite PTF's robust information dissemination structure. TfD could have helped the PTF share vital COVID-19 info with rural communities in Nigeria. The Nigerian government should establish a robust infrastructure for raising awareness and combating COVID-19 and other pandemics in rural areas through TfD

Abstract

The digital age and the pandemic have significantly impacted communication. The vast amount of data shared by internet users in virtual spaces has made issues related to the pandemic popular. Research was conducted in Indonesia to uncover the hidden meaning behind the pandemic's metanarrative. The study aimed to identify the government's interests behind the pandemic, dismantle them, and digitize communication. The research used Jacques Derrida's "Deconstruction" framework and qualitative approaches with descriptive-critical methods. It found that the pandemic has changed how people interact and communicate leading to significant social problems. These include mass hysteria and the emergence of a new social pathology called the information pandemic, characterized by fear, frustration, and stress. To control the phenomenon, the government has used a panopticon, which is a technique of power. The government strategy uses various forms of discourse, codes, rules, and symbols that trigger symbolic violence. However, the violence is in the form of soft and impressive discourse. The pandemic's impact on communication and society is far-reaching, and it is important to understand its effects.

Abstract

The role of social media in political campaigns has been a significantly growing phenomenon over the past two decades. The proliferation of this new medium has prompted various evolving research questions aligning with the increasingly progressive practices of digitalizing political campaigning. Considering tracking advancements in this field, the study analyzes the publication trends and patterns in scholarly journals and conference proceedings about the utilization of social media in political campaigns from 2008 to 2023. Employing a qualitative science mapping approach, data are extracted from the Scopus database using keywords related to social media usage in political campaigns during the specified timeframe. Data analysis uses the recent science mapping R package called Bibliometrix, supplemented by network mapping visualization and keyword density analysis using VOSviewer. Findings reveal a notable increase in publications, with the United States emerging as the foremost contributor, demonstrating a more than eighty percent increase since 2011. Our study found that Information Communication and Society is the top publisher, and the University of California has the most institutional affiliations. Twitter is the most researched social media platform, and recent publications focus on using computation-based techniques like machine learning and natural language processing to study social media in political campaigns

Abstract

The multicultural attitude of Surabaya youth plays an essential role in realizing inclusive and sustainable global citizenship. In an era of increasingly connected globalization, Surabaya youth are faced with complex and interrelated challenges that require understanding, tolerance, and respect for cultural diversity. Factors such as education, personal experience, social environment, and the media have a crucial role in shaping the multicultural attitudes of Surabaya youth. The multicultural attitude of Surabaya youth contributes to realizing global citizenship through participation in cross-cultural activities, understanding global issues, and efforts to build harmonious relations between nations. Surabaya youth broaden their understanding of cultural diversity by engaging in cross-cultural activities and promoting positive intercultural dialogue. Understanding global issues enables them to play an active role in solving global challenges and fighting for sustainable solutions. Through harmonious international relations, the youth of Surabaya have a positive impact on building a more just, inclusive, and equitable world

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution 4.0 and the COVID-19 pandemic changed the habits and workings of the business world and the industrial world with a digital technology approach, which has the potential to threaten various professions and employment opportunities. Graduates add to unemployment rates. Prospective workers need digital literacy competencies to compete in the current world of work. This study seeks to measure the extent and importance of digital literacy competence for the Gen-Z workforce of higher education graduates facing the world of work. This study uses an explanatory method with a sure approach. Data collection was done using a Likert scale 1-5 questionnaire, distributed to 133 respondents selected by the researchers, and targeted the workforce of college graduates aged 24-29 (Gen-Z) in the South West Java region with a simple random sampling technique. Then, the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and structural equations, such as structural equation modeling. Digital literacy competence, including knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values, has a positive effect on the work readiness of Generation Z in rural South West Java. Further research is needed to develop human resources in these areas

Abstract

This paper examines the construction of a dominant discourse criticized by parody in film. The construction of Javanese cultural discourse has been the dominant discourse since the beginning of the Indonesian state; even the meanings born from the construction of the discourse remain to this day. Javanese cultural discourse refers to all forms of discussion related to cultural aspects in Java, including values, norms, traditions, art, language, and local wisdom of the Javanese people. Nagabonar's film deconstructs Javanese discourse with historical parody in its story. This research is expected to open up another way of thinking from the dominance of Javacentric thinking. Two approaches are used to recite and criticize Nagabonar's film as text: cinematographic theory and deconstruction. First is the mise-en-scene approach and staging in cinematographic theory, while the second is the theory of deconstruction to see what history hides or forbids and recasts a discourse construction of thinking that was previously marginalized or even alienated. This study aims to show the meaning of criticism in Nagabonar films against Javacentric dominant discourse through the deconstruction of film texts. Critics of this film tend to open questions about the concept of Indonesian nationalism

Abstract

The search for cultural expertise capable of laying bare cultural biases that impede equable interaction in cross and multicultural workspaces has yielded theories such as cultural humility, cultural intelligence, cultural competence, and cultural reflexivity. These theories propose new ways of interaction in groups outside our origin cultures, where culturally institutionalized banalities resulting from our origin culture can be reduced in cross and multicultural settings. This study examines the use of pride in reinforcing culture and its impact on employee relationships in multicultural workspaces. It distinguishes between authentic and hubristic pride and highlights that cultural differences can pose a challenge. To conduct cultural research, pride needs constant review as it is a universal neurocomputational program designed to orchestrate cognition, physiology, and behavior. This inevitable challenge drives the need for competencies in cultural humility, competence, and reflexivity to taper situations of cultural diversity where ideas are contrary.  We propose the development of global tribal village workspace communication, holding a more expansive room for valuation with a focus on respect for the sensibilities of others and eschewing quick judgments that bring about incidences of disharmony.

Abstract

This study aims to cover the transformation of social capital in a digital society and its support for tolerance. This study used a quantitative method with descriptive content analysis. The research subjects are Twitter social media users. The object of this research is identified through user involvement in tolerance issues on social networks such as Twitter. The analysis tool that is maximized is Nvivo 12 Plus. The study reveals that disseminating harmful and intolerant content on social media platforms can pose a significant obstacle to establishing meaningful social connections. Such content is capable of provoking conflicts, reinforcing intergroup divisions, and eroding the social trust needed to foster tolerance. Fake news and negative narratives can reinforce negative stereotypes and have a significant impact on society's mindset. Promoting positive social values requires increasing digital literacy, taking a strong stance against content intolerance, implementing policies that promote tolerance, and ensuring access to information for all. This study highlights the grave danger of spreading harmful content on social media platforms like Twitter, as it can significantly threaten the building of substantial social capital. To promote digital tolerance, we need to increase literacy, enforce strict policies, strengthen online networks, and promote constructive dialogue

Abstract

This study examines how the role of religion in a democratic environment is related to the history of democracy itself, especially in the country of Nigeria in 2023. Religious leaders often mobilize their congregations or allow politicians to use their podiums to mobilize support during elections. The findings of this study imply that religious leaders have now become active political actors in Nigeria, a country divided along ethnic and religious lines. The mobilization of voters based on ethnic and religious sentiments will have a negative impact on the development of democracy in the country, in the sense that leaders are chosen not based on the leadership qualities they possess or based on their competence, but rather based on primordial sentiments. This research uses explanatory research to explain and examine how religious leaders influence the results of several elections in Nigeria, especially the 2023 elections. This research uses secondary data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), an election management body in Nigeria
