Abstract

This study examines the identity negotiation practices among ethnic Chinese in inter-ethnic relations in Madura, Indonesia. Even though ethnic Chinese have been living in Madura for quite a long time, they are still often considered as “strangers” by most of native Madurese. This study used qualitative data from literature review, field observations, and in-depth interviews with fifty informants of the ethnic Chinese who were born and lived in Madura. This study found that the practice of identity negotiation carried out by the ethnic Chinese in Madura includes several ways: using local language in daily conversation, changing their Chinese names into native Madurese names, practicing the Madurese indigenous cultural traditions in daily life, embracing Islam – the majority religion of the native Madurese – as their new religion, and marrying native Madurese men or women. The findings of this study corroborated prior studies that in unequal inter-ethnic relations, the ethnic minority often have to sacrifice themselves to be accepted by the ethnic majority. Moreover, ethnic minorities often have to negotiate identities, by hiding their master identity and highlighting other minor identities in order to be accepted and coexist with the ethnic majority.

Abstract

This study examined recent virality of “Ok Boomer” in the United States. The term of Ok Boomer gained overnight momentum in the public sphere as the symbol of a generational war. While previous research has primarily examined racial and gender tensions, this study introduced a new phenomenon of the generational conflict between “Ok Boomers” and “Baby Boomers,” in which social media originated the term of Ok Boomer and traditional media diffused it with framed meaning. Diffusion of Innovation theory was used to better understand the path of how “Ok Boomer” as a catchphrase, hashtag, noun cluster or trend resulted in attracting a massive amount of media and public attention. Relying on Node XL, Google Trends, and Nexus Nexis for data gathering and analyses, this study categorized four themes for a word, or an idea as an innovation to be publicly acknowledged: collaboration of social media and traditional media, public figures’ involvement for debate; confrontational social issues, and media-framed agenda. In sum, this study argues the term of Ok Boomer symbolizes the advent of a generational war in society in line with the long-standing race and gender wars in the media coverage.

Abstract

A novel coronavirus; COVID-19 is posing a great threat to mankind worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the deadly pathogen as a pandemic in view of its alarming spread. Literature affirms that universities have a higher potential to be centres of a pandemic outbreak. The infectious disease could easily transmit from one person to many others within a university vicinity, thus creating a cluster if not properly contained. The Malaysian government has imposed the movement control order (MCO) to flatten the curve of infection. All economic sectors were closed during the MCO period. This study was conducted to explore the knowledge, attitude and health practices towards COVID-19 among internal stakeholders of a public university in Malaysia. An online survey was carried out on the first week of MCO. A total of 340 respondentsD comprised of students and staffs took part in the survey. The regression analysis found knowledge and attitude were significant predictors for adopting appropriate health practices among the internal stakeholders during the new coronavirus outbreak. This present study extends the existing literature on health crisis focusing on internal stakeholders of an institute of higher learning particularly during an early phase of MCO in Malaysia.

Tapered political and economic interests have become a religious problem that is prevalent in Indonesia. Even opposition to the religious background in East Java is very high and the East Java community is ranked second as an intolerant society in Indonesia. But not so in the multi-religious Resapombo Village they lived in harmony and side by side without any open conflict among the community. Therefore in this study the focus of the study was based on how the role of the BPD and LPMD was interpreted by the Resapombo Village community to play a role in managing inter-religious harmony. This study uses the perspective of Blumer symbolic interaction, namely social interaction can be understood through the meaning interpreted by the actor. This study uses qualitative research methods with a phenomenological approach. The social process can take the form of several mutual cooperation activities and consensus agreements. with the existence of official village institutions in the form of BPD and LPMD which are accommodative places to accommodate all political interests at the village level.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to prove that undergraduates have the capacity to be engaged in conducting empirical research and generating knowledge. It discusses the outcomes of a recent research training programme offered to undergraduates at the International Islamic University Malaysia. The training programme was organized and conducted by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. As of early 2020, about 700 undergraduates, including those studying at different departments at the Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences (KIRKHS) have been trained. Working in teams, the undergraduates produced remarkable research projects presented in the form of written reports, oral presentations, and open discussions. To document these papers, the first social research collection book titled “Khalduniyyat” was submitted to the respective faculty, KIRKHS, for review and publication. This paper is based on a qualitative research approach, employing semi-structured interviews with fifteen academics who supervised or attended the training activities. Further, the paper reflects on the feedback provided by the trainees. The originality of this research paper is presented by showing how the programme explored and enhanced the intellectual capabilities of IIUM undergraduates, that resulted in the enhancement of their research skills equivalent to postgraduate level
