Abstract

This study analyzes the use of directive speech acts in TED Talk language learning videos through a pragmatic approach, focusing on orders and suggestions as primary categories. The research examines the speeches of four speakers Matyas Pilin, Chris Lonsdale Lydia Machova, and Marianna Pascal to understand how their speech styles influence the delivery of language learning strategies. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling data collection. From the 273 data that the author found, 47 data of utterances were selected from four different videos for analysis. The findings reveal that male speakers predominantly use orders, emphasizing a structured and authoritative instructional approach, while female speakers favor suggestions, promoting a supportive and motivational teaching style. This balance between orders and suggestions highlights the diverse strategies employed to address both cognitive and emotional aspects of learners. This study contributes to the fields of pragmatics and educational communication by demonstrating how directive speech acts influence instructional effectiveness. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, linguists, and public speakers in developing more impactful and learner-centered teaching methods. Moreover, the study offers a foundation for further research into the interplay of speech acts, instructional strategies, and cultural or contextual influences in educational settings.

Abstract

This research examines the application of the principle of politeness in the film "Murder on the Orient Express" using a pragmatic approach. This study analyzes how each dialogue spoken by the characters in the film can be defined as part of the principle of politeness maxims proposed by Geoffrey Leech. There are 6 maxims of politeness principles, namely the maxim of tact, the maxim of generosity, the maxim of agreement, the maxim of politeness, the maxim of agreement, and the maxim of sympathy. Of all these maxims, this study analyzes the order in which these maxims appear in the dialogue conversations in this film, along with possible reasons. The research method used by the author in this study is a qualitative descriptive research method that can examine evidence of the emergence of speech that implies the principles of politeness maxims in it. In this study, the author found (2) maxims of tact, (5) maxims of generosity, (9) maxims of agreement, (8) maxims of politeness, (6) maxims of agreement, and (3) maxims of sympathy. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the relevance of politeness principles in understanding communication dynamics in a fictional context, highlighting how these principles contribute to character development and plot development. Further research is recommended to explore the application of politeness principles across cultures in film and other media.

Abstract

This study investigated the interface between pragmatic and grammatical competence in second language acquisition. This study aims to discover the conceptual framework of how pragmatics competence interfaces with grammatical competence. This study employs three research questions such as (1) how pragmatics competence and grammatical competence are interfaced with each other, (2) what kind of pragmatics competence should be learned by the learner of a second language, and (3) to what extent grammatical construction interface with the pragmatic domain. This study used the groundwork of the library research method, which forms the theoretical framework of this study by searching, reading, and evaluating some journals from the online journal that deals with the topic. The result revealed that pragmatic competence and grammatical competence are interfaced with each other since grammatical construction in the utterance contributes to the language use expression.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the morphological processes of compound words found in the lyrics of Lover, an album by Taylor Swift. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on identifying the types, functions, and meanings of compound words present in the album's lyrics. The results reveal six types of compound words, categorized as adverbial compounds, verbal compounds, and nominal compounds, with nominal compounds being the most prevalent. Words such as sweetheart and daylight represent themes of affection and hope, while terms like heartbreak and homecoming convey emotional nuances associated with love, loss, and relationships. This research highlights the role of morphology in songwriting and demonstrates how compound words enhance the emotional and thematic depth of the lyrics. The findings offer new insights into the intersection of language and art, emphasizing the creative use of morphological processes in popular music.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the factors that negatively affect santri's attitudes toward learning English in an Indonesian Islamic boarding school. Pre-observation revealed that approximately 29% of students exhibited behaviors such as lack of focus, motivation, and interest, often engaging in disruptive actions like joking around, sleeping in class, and neglecting their studies. To explore these factors, a descriptive case study was conducted, involving semi-structured interviews with three 11th-grade students. The findings reveal three primary themes: lack of exposure to English, language anxiety, and lack of motivation. Insufficient exposure to English hindered students’ proficiency, particularly in listening, reading, and pronunciation. Anxiety about making mistakes created emotional barriers, preventing students from engaging in English-speaking activities. Additionally, low motivation, often exacerbated by an uninspiring classroom environment and absence of peers, contributed to disengagement and negative attitudes. These insights emphasize the importance of addressing cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors to promote positive language attitudes and enhance language acquisition.

Illocutionary acts play a crucial role in conveying meaning and expressing certain intentions in communication. This study analyzes the use of illocutionary act in the Inside Out 2 animated movie to understand how the characters use their utterances to achieve their intentions and goals. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to analyze the dominant type of illocutionary act in the character’s utterannces in the movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by transcribing the dialogues and classifying the types of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s (1979) theory, which includes representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The findings reveal that there are 320 total data and representative is the dominant type with 133 data (41%), which indicates that each character in the movie tends to informing, describing, claiming, clarifying, or agreeing. The second most frequently used is directive with 102 data (32%), followed by expressive with 61 data (19%), then commissive with 22 data (7%) and declarative with 2 data (1%) as the lowest. This study concludes that illocutionary acts in this movie can be interpreted into five types of intentions. The writer recommends this study can be used as a reference for the learning about illocutionary acts or as a reference for the similiar study with a different perspective.

Abstract

Representing women's beauty standards in the media significantly shapes people's views on self-esteem. This research is essential to understand how the media reveals a narrow definition of beauty standards. This research analyses the representation of female beauty standard of a main female character on a movie using critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills’ theory. The movie “Tall Girl” served as the data source of this research. The data were analyzed with a qualitative approach through documentation, observation, and note taking and validated by expert judgment to determine the theory of feminism by revealing two research objectives: (1) how is the main female character views the beauty standards from the language used and (2) how is the main female character depicted from the language used in the movie. The findings and discussion of this research revealed that Jodi Kreyman, as the main character, transforms the position of an object of bullying to that of a subject who can accept her physical appearance. In addition, from the reader's position, the film allows the reader to empathize with Jodi's struggle and think more critically about the broader standards of female beauty. In conclusion, the movie challenges narrow beauty standards and demonstrates the importance of self-acceptance. Future research could analyze similar issues or the audience's perspectives on female beauty standards to create new insight.

Simile (make a direct comparison using the term "like"). Personification (inanimate objects namely fan and car are given human characteristics or talents). Symbol (use elements of numbers and drink brands with meanings that are different from their literal meanings). Hyperbole (use clearly exaggerated statements to emphasize certain feelings and situations). Irony (there is a mismatch between what is said or expected and the truth or deepest feelings behind the statement).
