Abstract

Despite growing interest in visual emotion in Indonesian cinema, limited attention has been paid to how religious–humanist films visualize humanitarian meaning; this study addresses that gap through an analysis of Hayya: The Power of Love 2. Narratively, this film is rooted in the real-world issue of Palestine, providing an empirical context for visually examining the humanitarian dimension. This study analyzes how mise-en-scène generates humanitarian meaning in Hayya: The Power of Love 2 (2019). A qualitative–descriptive approach is applied within Roland Barthes’s semiotic framework at the levels of denotation and connotation. Data were collected through shot-by-shot observation and visual note-taking, analyzed using denotative–connotative coding and occurrence mapping to identify patterns of meaning. The unit of analysis consists of shots or frames from purposively selected key scenes. Overall, the findings show that in-frame arrangements consistently guide interpretations toward humanitarian themes—especially vulnerability, solidarity, and an ethics of care—through relations among visual signs rather than reliance on dialogue. The study contributes to visual semiotics and humanitarian representation by demonstrating how recurring spatial, chromatic, and embodied cues organize and naturalize humanitarian concern in Indonesian religious–humanist cinema.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Digital Storytelling (DST) in EFL speaking classes by examining students’ perceptions, experiences, and challenges, as well as its role in supporting linguistic and affective aspects of speaking development. Grounded in persistent EFL speaking difficulties such as anxiety, low confidence, and limited opportunities for meaningful oral practice, this study addresses gaps in previous DST research that has largely focused on narrative outcomes or quantitative performance gains. Using a descriptive mixed-method research design, data were collected through exploratory questionnaires from 20 English Education students engaged in DST-based speaking activities and analyzed descriptively using frequency and thematic analysis. The findings show that DST positively influences students’ speaking development, particularly in confidence, fluency, and motivation, as opportunities to rehearse, and revise speech reduce anxiety and increase awareness of language use. The multimodal features of DST also support clearer idea organization and expression in both narrative and non-narrative speaking tasks. Despite these benefits, students faced challenges related to technical limitations, time constraints, and idea generation. Overall, the study concludes that DST is an effective and flexible instructional approach for enhancing EFL speaking skills when supported by adequate scaffolding, technical assistance, and preparation time.

Abstract

In an increasingly connected global world, film plays a crucial role in representing the complexities of Chinese diasporic identity and its accompanying emotional legacies. This study compares Lulu Wang's The Farewell (2019), representing the Chinese American community, with Pat Boonnitipat's How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024), focusing on the Sino-Thai community. Both films highlight the tension between tradition and modernity, as well as between family values and economic pressures within contemporary capitalism. Drawing on Benedict Anderson's concept of the Imagined Community, this study analyzes how narrative structure, language use, and representations of death function as symbolic devices in constructing an imagined diasporic togetherness. The results show that The Farewell (2019) emphasizes identity fragmentation marked by linguistic alienation and emotional distance, while How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies (2024) depicts a more connected form of family relations, albeit still influenced by the consumption and economic aspirations. Ultimately, both films represent the Chinese diaspora not only as an ethnic or geographical entity but as a construct of affective experiences born from collective practices of grief, care, and memory. Viewing cinema as an emotional and cultural archive, this study asserts that film demonstrates how diasporic communities continue to shape, negotiate, and reimagine their identities, losses, and legacies in an increasingly transnational world.

Abstract

The study aims to develop and evaluate the feasibility of Nahwu Educational T-shirts, a wearable instructional media designed to support visual and contextual learning of Arabic grammar (Nahwu). The study employed a research and development methodology based on the four-D model, comprising the stages of definition, design, development, and dissemination. The subjects were students in the Arabic language program at Universitas Negeri Jakarta. Data collection used expert validation sheets, questionnaires, and interviews. The analysis used descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative methods. The results show that the product is highly practical, with mean validation scores of 3.46 from material experts and 3.50 from design experts. During the dissemination survey, 87.5% of students considered the product innovative, 79% said the media engaged them more with the material, and 75% reported it helped them learn Nahwu concepts. It demonstrates that integrating grammatical content into contextual and visual media can increase students’ interest and understanding of Arabic syntax. Nahwu educational T-shirts are a modest yet practical and effective visual learning tool that makes Arabic grammar instruction more engaging and contextually meaningful.

Abstract

This study examines how Iran is represented in a The Guardian news article that discusses post-ceasefire Iran–United States relations. The focus is placed on how media language, while appearing neutral, can still carry ideological meanings through subtle linguistic choices. The study draws on Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), supported by Systemic Functional Linguistics and pragmatic analysis, to examine ten selected excerpts. These excerpts contain features such as modality, nominalization, negation, hedging, and rhetorical questioning, which are used to shape how Iran is linguistically constructed in the text. The analysis suggests that Iran is represented as a state actor with strategic positioning and resilience. This representation is not stated directly but emerges through repeated patterns of wording and grammatical choices across the text. In this way, language contributes to how geopolitical actors are understood in relation to power, legitimacy, and conflict. Rather than treating the news text as purely objective reporting, this study highlights how micro-linguistic patterns contribute to the framing of geopolitical actors in news discourse. However, the findings are limited to a single article and are not intended to represent Western media in general.

Abstract

This study aims to determine how to improve the accurate understanding of Indonesian vocabulary and language skills through project-based learning. The problem among English Education students at UNU Purwokerto enrolled in the Indonesian language course is that many have a shallow, limited vocabulary, and their Indonesian language skills are still not good or correct. The problem formulation in this research is how to improve vocabulary understanding and develop good, correct Indonesian language skills through project-based learning. This research employs Kemmis & McTaggart’s model of Classroom Action Research through project-based learning methods. The class action research was carried out for two cycles, cycle 1 and cycle 2, with a span of one month in four meetings. The pretest results in cycle 1 are still below the complete limit of 60. In the post-test in cycle 1, there was an increase of 72, which was 15%. Furthermore, in cycle 2, the pre-test decreased with an average score of 70, but after implementing learning by assigning students to group discussions and presentations related to vocabulary and standard language in the article, students experienced an increase in the post-test with an average score of 83, which exceeded the finish line with an increase of 28.75%.

Abstract

Nature has been widely discussed in crime fiction studies, especially as a setting to support the atmosphere. However, no study specifically examines how nature actively constructs mystery in the story. This article analyzes how nature operates as both a sign and an ecological threat in And Then There Were None. This study uses qualitative close reading. Estok's ecophobia and Buell’s environmental imagination are applied to examine nature’s threatening role in the narrative, while Peirce's semiotics is used to understand how natural elements function as signs that deepen the mystery. The findings reveal that the mystery is represented by the absence of the host, U.N. Owen, and the nursery rhyme "Ten Little Soldiers" as predictors of death. Nature functions as an active mechanism of mystery through the island's geographical isolation, the depiction of nature as a cause of death in the rhyme, and the storm that closes off any possibility of rescue. As a result, the characters experience helplessness, all paths to resolution are closed, and the inescapable fear drives the narrative toward its inevitable conclusion. This article contributes to ecocritical perspectives on detective fiction by showing that nature can be more than a passive backdrop, but rather an active narrative agent working towards both suspense and structural inevitability.

Abstract

Linguistic learning in higher education requires learning materials that are not only informative but also capable of deepening students’ conceptual understanding and encouraging active engagement in the learning process. This study investigates the effectiveness of a context-based textbook in enhancing students’ comprehension of morphology, particularly in the Indonesian Morphology course. The One-Group Pretest–Posttest Design was used, with questionnaires administered before and after the textbook evaluation; its effectiveness was subsequently analyzed using a t-test and N-gain analysis in SPSS. The participants consisted of third-semester students enrolled in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program at Universitas PGRI Silampari. The t-test produced a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, lower than the 0.05 significance threshold, which indicates a statistically significant improvement in learning outcomes. The N-gain score of 0.70 falls within the moderate category, showing that the textbook substantially improved student learning. Furthermore, student responses to the questionnaire averaged 88.58%, which was categorized as “convenient,” indicating a high level of acceptance of the learning material. In conclusion, the context-based Indonesian Morphology textbook has proven effective and practical for higher education. It not only enhances students’ conceptual understanding but also fulfills their needs for relevant and accessible learning resources.

Abstract

This research aims to develop and evaluate ecology-based journalistic teaching materials, supported by the Ekosastra.com website, for the Indonesian Literature Study Program. The research is motivated by the gap in documentation between ecological journalism pedagogy and teaching materials. The research and development (R&D) approach was used in this study, guided by the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). The research involved 42 students in the needs analysis and 20 students in the limited implementation trial. The instrument was validated using a 1-4 Likert scale. The novelty of this research lies in combining an authentic digital platform with a domain-specific digital platform (Ekosastra.com) and teaching journalistic and ecological literacy. This has not been previously studied in Indonesian higher education. The results showed that the six-unit teaching materials received very valid ratings from the content experts (M=3.62) and media experts (M=3.54), and very good ratings from the students (M=3.48), all far above the minimum feasibility threshold. The teaching materials are a replicable model for integrating ecological literacy, journalism practice, and digital competence into the Indonesian Literature curricula, with broad implications for society 5.0-oriented higher education reform.

Abstract

This research examines the novel Zoebaidah (1940) by Njo Cheong Seng, a prolific Peranakan Chinese author of the early 20th century. This novel was published amidst the dominance of patriarchal discourse in Peranakan Chinese literature, which was mostly written by men. Using feminist narratology, this study analyzes how narrative techniques focused on characterization, focalization, and dialogue construct female subjectivity and negotiate power relations in the text. The research findings reveal that Zoebaidah is constructed ambiguously. She is presented as an intelligent and powerful woman, but is unable to free herself from cultural and customary control. This restrictive cultural construction is what Zoebaidah fights against. She is shown to have critical awareness and the courage to fight against oppressive structures. Zoebaidah's negotiation of patriarchal authority, her rejection of forced marriage, and her willingness to sacrifice personal interests for the sake of shared peace represent a subversive model of femininity. With these findings, this study offers a counter-discourse on women's freedom, identity, and agency, while articulating a critique of patriarchal structures through the construction of resistive and empowered female characters.
