Abstract

Teaching English vocabulary to young learners is an essential component of early language education, serving as a cornerstone for building effective communication skills, fostering cognitive development, and enabling academic success. Studies on strategies teachers use and their perception on the effectiveness of the strategies they implement towards the teaching of vocabulary to young learners are still scarce. The purpose of this study was to examine the methods used by teachers to teach words/vocabulary to young students in English and to ascertain how these methods were perceived by the teachers themselves. A qualitative method was employed to seek answers. This study used interviews and observation as its instruments. Four teachers with a degree in English education who have been teaching young students in the language for more than a year made up the research participants. The results revealed that the teachers used games, pictures, memorizing techniques, translations, realia, action/mime/gesture, and songs. The teachers felt that various techniques were appropriate for teaching vocabulary to younger students since the teachers could combine more than two strategies in a single session. As a result, they used a variety of techniques and activities in their instructions to help young students enjoy studying English vocabulary.

Abstract

Abstract: This research explores the portrayal of dissociative amnesia and the dynamics of the id, ego, and superego in the character of Elly Conway in the film Argylle using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. The study aims to describe how dissociative amnesia is depicted in Elly's character and to analyze the development of her personality in terms of Freud's structural model of the psyche. This study applies the qualitative descriptive analysis method. The findings indicate that Elly Conway suffers from dissociative amnesia, characterized by memory loss and disconnection from her past, resulting from the repression of traumatic memories. The study also reveals the evolving dynamics between the id, ego, and superego in Elly's personality. Initially dominated by her superego, Elly faces significant internal conflicts as repressed id impulses emerge. However, as the story progresses, her ego begins to dominate, allowing her to mediate between the desires of the id and the moral constraints of the superego. This research contributes to the understanding of character development in film, particularly in characters with dissociative disorders, through the lens of psychoanalytic theory.

Abstract

This article examines the lexical relations present in the lyrics of Billie Eilish's album Happier Than Ever. Using Saeed's theory of lexical relations, the study explores various meaning relations, including synonymy, antonymy, polysemy, hyponymy, meronymy, and member collection, as they appear in the album's lyrics. The research adopts a descriptive analysis approach, analyzing the lyrics of all 16 songs in the album to identify and categorize instances of lexical relations. Each song was examined in detail to explore how lexical choices contribute to the overarching themes and emotions conveyed in the album. The analysis revealed 16 instances of polysemy, 13 of antonymy, 12 of synonymy, 5 of hyponymy, 2 of meronymy, and 1 instance of member collection. Polysemy was found to be the most dominant lexical relation, highlighting the complexity and layered meanings in Eilish's lyrics. The findings suggest that the strategic use of lexical relations enhances the thematic depth and emotional resonance of the Happier Than Ever album, reflecting themes of mental health, personal struggle, and societal pressures. This study demonstrates that lexical semantics in contemporary music can serve as a powerful tool for conveying nuanced emotional narratives, contributing to the broader field of linguistic studies in music.

Abstract

Readers play an important role in analyzing a literary work. Each reader gives meaning and response to a work that may be similar but can also differ. Therefore, the existence of various online sites for reviewing a literary work enables other readers to see the diversity of responses to a novel. A Japanese novel that has received considerable attention and appreciation from readers is Yukiguni by Kawabata Yasunari. Various reader perspectives can be found on different online sites or blogs, such as Goodreads.com and LibraryThing.com, or in online bookstores like Amazon.co.jp. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to identify reader responses on online sites and analyzes them structurally. Through literary reception studies, it can be observed that each reader has a unique perspective on literature. Literary reception research also shows that literature is not static but is continuously brought to life and renewed by readers with each reading. This enriches literary studies by emphasizing the dialogical aspect between text and reader. The results of this study reveal readers' synchronous comments on the intrinsic elements of the novel which receive appreciation from readers in terms of both praise and criticism.

Abstract

Education is an effort to equip individuals with knowledge and instill character values to enhance students' future self-quality. This study analyzes the implementation of the Pancasila Student Profile (P3) in English textbooks for class X SMA/MA. The six elements of P3 include: 1) Faith, piety to God Almighty, and noble character; 2) Global diversity; 3) Collaboration; 4) Independence; 5) Critical reasoning; and 6) Creativity, serving as a framework to understand student characteristics. Using a qualitative approach and content analysis, this research involved identifying and categorizing text samples (e.g., words and sentences) to evaluate the representation of P3 dimensions. Findings reveal that the textbooks reflect behaviors and values aligned with the P3 dimensions. These include habitual worship and prayer, acceptance of differing perspectives, effective group discussions, critical problem-solving, and independent, wise behavior reflecting responsibility as Pancasila students. Results are presented in a checklist table, highlighting the integration of P3 values within the textbooks.
