Abstract

Lamalera fishermen in Lembata Regency traditionally hunt sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and preserve the blubber by sun-drying it on the beach prior to barter trading. The oil extracted from this blubber is typically characterized by a strong fishy odor. This study aims to determine the quality of sperm whale oil produced through this traditional preservation method. The research employed an experimental method. Solid blubber samples (221.34 g) were processes using thermal extraction to obtain the oil. The research procedure included sample preparation, thermal extraction, and analysis of physical and chemical properties with all experimental performed in triplicate. Physical analyses included oil yield, moisture content, and density, while chemical analyses comprised free fatty acid (FFA) content (by alkalimetric titration), saponification value (by acid–base titration), and iodine value (by Wijs method). The results showed an oil yield of 76.65%, moisture content of 1.43%, and density of 1.051 g/mL at 32°C. Chemically, the oil had a free fatty acid (FFA) content of 8.95%, saponification value of 80.41 mg KOH/g, and iodine value of 9.86 g I₂/100 g oi1l.

Abstract

This study elaborates the effect of different rearing container colors on the survival rate and growth performance of Tor douronensis juveniles. The experiment was conducted for 90 days using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and three replications. The treatments consisted of transparent, orange, yellow, blue, and dark green container colors. The observed parameters included survival rate (SR), daily weight growth (WGR), daily length growth (LGR), specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (K), coefficient of variation (CV), feed conversion ratio (FCR), and water quality. Result revealed that container color significantly affected (P<0.05) survival rate and most growth parameters, while no significant effect was observed on FCR (P>0.05). The yellow container treatment consistently showed the best performance, with the highest LGR (5.34±0.06 mm/day), SGR (2.29±0.04%/day), and survival rate (98.67±2.31%). Bright-colored container enhanced fish visibility and feeding efficiency, leading to better growth and reduced stress. In contrast, darker-colored container resulted in lower performance, presumably due to reduced light reflection and increased stress levels. Water quality parameters remained within the optimal range throughout the study, indicating that container color was the primary factor influencing fish performance. In conclusion, bright-colored container, particularly yellow, significantly enhanced the survival rate and growth performance of Tor douronensis juveniles. Manipulating container color is a simple and cost-effective strategy to improve productivity in freshwater fish farming. Keywords: Tor douronensis, container color, growth, survival

Abstract

The Industrial Revolution shifted production toward mechanization, significantly increasing fuel oil (BBM) dependency in Indonesia's fishing sector, particularly for lift net (bagan) operations. Bagan fishermen rely on generators (gensets) to power lamps that attract fish, yet the resulting exhaust emissions threaten environmental quality and climate stability. This study aims to analyze fuel consumption and emissions from gensets used in lift net fishing in Pagatan, South Kalimantan. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, primary data were collected through field observations of lift net units. The results revealed that one Lift net unit consumes approximately 1,000 liters of Pertalite per year, generating 2,300 kg of CO2 emissions annually. Collectively, the 200 units in Pagatan produced 460,000 kg of CO2 per year. These substantial emissions contribute significantly to air pollution and climate change, with CO2 levels reaching 700 ppm potentially impair human cognitive function and physiological health. These findings underscore the urgent need for a transition to eco-friendly alternative energy sources to support government programs in reducing pollution and mitigating climate change impacts in the fisheries sector.keywords: Carbon dioxide; Emissions; Fuel consumption; Generator, Lift net

Abstract

Scad fish (Decapterus sp) is a high-value pelagic fishery commodity in Indonesia, widely known for its abundance and high nutritional content. However, different drying methods can significantly affect its nutritional quality. This study aims to determine the effect of drying methods on the nutritional composition of Scad fish. The research employed a comparative study with two treatments: traditional sun-drying and oven-drying. The study was conducted in October 2024, with sample preparation carried out at the Larantuka Institute of Teacher Training and Technology, and nutritional analyses performed at the Feed Chemistry Laboratory of Nusa Cendana University, Kupang. The analyses were conducted using standard methods: gravimetric for moisture content, dry combustion for ash content, Soxhlet for fat content, Kjeldahl for protein content, and by-difference calculation for carbohydrate content. The results demonstrated that drying methods significantly affected moisture, ash, fat, protein, and carbohydrate content of the Scad fish. The oven-drying method yielded the best nutritional profile, with moisture content of 14.337%, ash content of 36.00%, fat content of 9.187%, protein content of 53.262%, and carbohydrate content of 1.551%.Keywords: Decapterus sp; gravimetri; kjeldahl; Oven; Soxhlet: Solar Thermal
