Abstract

Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency has a great potential for mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea) resources. This commodity is highly valued, as its price range from Rp. 143,600 to 180,700 for each individual. Annually, the total catches constitute 125,000-225,000 individuals, which become one of export commodities to various countries. In Tanjung Jabung barat, the mantis shrimp has been caught by using gillnet with mesh size of 10 cm. Unfortunately, mantis shrimp fishing deal with a significant number of bycatch and discards, which potentially have negative impact on sustainable fisheries resources. Therefore, the purposes of this study was to emphasis on sustainable fishing effort of mantis shrimp and identify the composition and proportion of bycatch and discards. A series of surveys was conducted for collecting the amount of species caught by gillnet during mantis shrimp fishing operation. The result shows that the bycatch and discards dominated the total catches making up to 54.99% (7 species) and 22.69% (7 species) respectively. Mean while, the total of fishing catches for mantis shrimp was 22.32%.Keywords: bycatch, discards, gillnet, mantis shrimp (Harpiosquilla raphidea)

Abstract

Mantis shrimp is an export commodity that caught by fishermen in Kuala Tungkal. Mostly, the fishermen use gillnet as their main fishing gear. However, this fishing effort shares open access and common property to be its aquatic resources with other fishing businesses that may bring potential conflicts related to fishing areas, utilization of aquatic resources, fishing gear, etc. Thus, this current study aims to analyze economic value and potential conflicts in mantis shrimp catch in Kuala Tungkal. A survey method was applied as the research method. From 2015 to 2017, the export volume and value of shrimp commodities continued to increase. The results show that profit value (π) possessed by catching mantis shrimp is Rp637.500,00 per trip, R/C 5.6 and PP 39 trips showing a good financial value and potential to be developed. Meanwhile, potential conflicts in catching mantis shrimp tend to be low since there is no overlapping fishing area for each fishing gear operated by different aquatic resource users. It means that the operation of fishing gear has been set well by the community of fishing businesses in that area so that the potential for social conflicts between aquatic resources users is also low.

Abstract

Trawl has the size a mesh size  a small size pockets of the cod end. This allows the trawl fishing gear to potentially be a fishing gear that is not selective about the size of the fish and the species that are targeted for its catch. If this fishing gear is left, its existence will eventually have a negative impact on the sustainability of fish resources, especially in coastal waters. The purpose of this study is to calculate the composition and proportion of main catches, bycatch and discarded catches. It is expected that knowing the composition and proportion of the main, by-product and discarded catches can provide an overview of the pressure on stocks and sustainability of fisheries resources in the waters where trawl is operated. The method used in this study is a survey method. A series of survey activities were carried out directly in the field to identify and count the types of species caught by trawlers. Based on the percentage of main catch, by-catch and discard per type, it Matuta planipes are the dominant species caught by trawlers (23.65%). The main catch Parapenaeus longirostris 15.92%. In addition, the main catch caught were Parapenaeopsis sculptilis (9.787%), Penaeus merguiensis (0.646%), Metapenaeus brevicornis (10.118%), Penaeus indicus (0.029%) and Squilla mantis (0.153%). Percentage of bycatch reaches 2.245% of 10 species caught and discarded catches reach 61.103% of 25 species caught.

Abstract

Fish feed is one of the highest cost components in carrying out intensive system fish farming activities which makes the high price of feed will affect the continuity of the aquaculture business. For fish cultivators, high feed prices will cause difficulties because about 60% of production costs come from feed. The high cost of feed is partly due to the fact that some of the raw materials for feed are still imported. Biogas waste from cow dung is a potential source of alternative raw material for fish feed with adequate quality of carbohydrate nutrients accompanied by guaranteed quantities and availability throughout the year. The purpose of this activity is to socialize in the manufacture of fish feed from biogas waste from cow dung in Teluk Roban Village, Sorkam Tapanuli Tenah District. The method used is to carry out direct training activities with demonstrations of the procedures and stages of making fish feed in the form of pellets for fish cultivators and the community. The results obtained from this activity are expected to be later for fish cultivators or community groups to understand the manufacture of fish feed in the form of pellets from biogas waste from cow dung as a business that can fill the local market that has not been filled with much and can compete in the business of making fish feed. . With this activity, it is hoped that there will be an increase in the skills of making fish feed in the form of commercial-scale pellets for the local market

Abstract

Abstract

Mantis Shrimp is one of economically important species due to its high value for export commodities. Mantis shrimp fishing in Kuala Tungkal is categorized as small-scale fisheries. This study aims to investigate the spatial distribution of mantis shrimp catches, both the number (individuals) and body length (BL) (cm) based on the distance from the shoreline to the fishing ground. A survey method was conducted in Kuala Tungkal, Tanjung Jabung Barat Regency, Jambi Province in December 2018. The observation covered 23 fishing trips by gillnet within 437 km2. The results revealed that the spatial distribution of the average number (individuals) of mantis shrimp in various stratifications reached 28-31 individuals. However, the farther fishing ground with higher salinity levels obtained a larger average size of mantis shrimp body length (BL). In the 0-4 mile stratification, it was found that the average catch size is 17.3 cm under the first maturity size which should be 19 cm. Meanwhile, in average the observed water condition as follow temperature is 28.2oC, DO = 7.4 mg/L, pH = 7, brightness = 1.1 m, and salinity is 20.9 ppt. At the end, the result of this spatial distribution may become an input for coastal resource management strategies and can support sustainable mantis shrimp fishing efforts.

Abstract

Pangasius polyuranodon is one of the fish that lives in the Siak River, Riau Province. Where the water quality in the Siak River is included in the heavily polluted category. Availability of food, reproductive success, and growth patterns of fish are important factors in fish survival Pangasius polyuranodon. To determine the effect of decreasing water quality on these fish, a study was conducted in December 2016. Sampling was carried out once / a week and was caught at four stations in Pekanbaru City. A total of 42 fish were caught with 18 female fish and 24 male fish. Observation of gastric contents was carried out using the gravimetric method. The gastric contents that have been analyzed are used as a basis for, counting Preponderance Index (PI). Observations showed that the main food of fish Pangasius polyuranodon are plants (PI 56.19), insect complementary foods (PI 18.04) and oil palm (PI 16.45), additional foods in the form of gastropods (PI 2.97) and fish (PI 0.20). Based on the level of maturity of the gonads, the results showed that fish eat more insects and oil palm for gonad development. Based on the data obtained from this research, this fish is an omnivore and the decrease in the quality of the Siak River waters does not significantly affect the eating habits of the juaro fish.
