Abstract

The process of teaching English as a foreign language involves the use of target language as a means of providing language exposure to the students. The apropriate amount and quality of the use of target language affect the quality of the instruction. The present paper reports an effort of describing degree of the use of English by teachers in teaching process, techniques teachers use and problems the teachers usually face of their teaching activity. This research belongs to a case study involving four English teachers in Kutoarjo District. Two teachers were selected from advanced schools with complete facilities, while the other two from rural schools with mediocre facilities. The result shows that degree of the use of English by teachers varies. T1 uses 25% English in teaching, T2 20%, T3 35% and T4 40% in their instruction. Further, it is also revealed that teachers use various techniques in their teaching process. They also face some problems. For example T1’s students have poor vocabulary mastery which can affect the teaching learning process. T2 often feels difficult to master the classroom atmosphere. Some T2’s students have unstable motivation to learn English. The pronunciation of T4 find students’ poor pronunciation becomes a problem.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to: (1) describe the appropriateness of textbooks used by seventh grade junior high school with the criteria of good textbooks developed by Ur’s theory, and (2) reveal the strengths and weaknesses of each textbook. This research was conducted using evaluation research. The data was obtained through document analysis and interviewing expert. Ur’s theory was used to analyze the data. The objects of this research for analysis were two English textbooks; WERB and Bright for seventh grade junior high school. The research found out When English Ring a Bell meets eight criteria of a good textbook by Ur. They are: objectives explicitly laid out in an introduction, attractive layout and visual material, interesting and various topics, the content organization, and graded adequate guidance for the teacher, and readiness of the textbook. Bright meets all the criteria of a good textbook. The researcher also found the strength of WERB lies in its colorful and attractive layout and the textbook also presents various topics that motivate the students to practice actively. There is teachers’ book as guidelines. Meanwhile, the strength of Bright lies in clear layout, pictures and illustration, four skills are covered. Its main weaknesses are the dull color of this textbook and no teacher’s book is provided. The researcher concludes that Bright is better than WERB. This book is appropriate with criteria of good textbooks and used by teacher and student. It is available in many bookstores. Bright is also compatible in terms of coherence and unity of ideas among units and language content.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is (1) to develop supplementary English-speaking materials for the students of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari grade X based on the 2013 Curriculum, (2) to describe the effectiveness of the supplementary English-speaking material for the students of SMKN Tanjungsari grade X in developing their speaking skill. The research belongs to Educational research and Development (R&D) using a simplified six steps of Borg and Gall’s model (1983). The six steps are as follows. (1) Research and information collecting were conducted by performing document analysis, class observation, interview, product testing, as well as experts’ judgement, (2) planning and drafting were conducted following Nation and Macallister (2010), (3) Draft revision by expert, (4) Field testing was conducted in Nautica class A of the X grade of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari, (5) Revision, and (6) Final product. The finding shows that (1) supplementary materials which were developed in this research fulfill the criteria of R&D model. It is necessary to provide speaking materials which were needed for the students of SMKN 1 Tanjungsari who faced the problem in speaking skill. The product of the research also fulfills the teacher’ needs as the materials which are not covered in the recently used textbook can be found in this supplementary material but the focus is in speaking. (2) The effectiveness of the supplementary speaking materials shows it is helpful towards the students in developing their speaking skill which is very needed in working world. The supplementary of speaking materials provides additional learning resources for students as well as the teacher to teach.

Abstract

Between 250-300 words; must focus on: aims of the study, methods, findings, conclusions, and implications. This study discuses the technique to improve students’ ability in speaking English especially for the students of twelfth grade and the students’ respond to the drama technique in teaching speaking. The researcher focuses on the method to improve the speaking ability. The study has two questions as stated in the problem formulation: 1.) How is the use of drama in teaching learning process of speaking at the XII grade of SMA Santo Thomas Yogyakarta? 2.) How were the students’ responses to the application of drama in teaching speaking at the XII grade of SMA Santo Thomas Yogyakarta?This study belonged to classroom action research as a methodology in teaching learning process of speaking. The research involved collaboration and cooperative in learning teaching process of English. Classroom action research occurs through a dynamic and complementary process which was consisting of five essentials moment; reconnaissance, planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. This research consisted of two cycles and each cycle has planning, implementation, observation, and reflection as the research procedure. In each cycle’s researcher using drama technique to deliver the subject of the lesson.The findings of this research showed the improvement in many aspects in teaching learning process of speaking by comparing before and after using drama technique. It indicated that the teaching learning process was successful, both the researcher and the students gained the objectives of teaching and learning process. Based on the result of the research, it showed that drama technique could be applied to improve teaching learning process of speaking for students.

Abstract

One of the two most determining factors in the teaching-learning process is teacher. Teacher backgrounds which affect the teaching-learning process cover wide aspects to include creativity. This paper reports a study to describe teachers’ creativity in developing the speaking skills of their students in Junior High Schools in Yogyakarta. The study belongs to qualitative research which data were collected from observation and interviews to four teachers selected from all English teachers in Yogyakarta teaching in both private and public schools based on their creativity in developing speaking skills. The observations were backed up with video-recording to catch detailed teacher-students interaction based on which the phenomenon understudy can be described. Follow-up interviews with teachers and students were conducted to help her in-depth understanding of the nature of creativity of the teachers, and thus triangulate the data for the study. Findings show that teachers’ creativity was exercised in encouraging students, questioning and teacher praising, using the learning material, developing learning activities, and Internet and Communication Technology. Further analysis found the teachers’ creativity was also employed in giving positive feedback and response, understanding students, mistake, and clear questions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, English teachers use textbooks to help students in the teaching-learning process and use it as a self-help resource to get rich input in learning. To improve the quality of English language teaching in Indonesia, this research was conducted to measure whether the three books used in Senior High School, i.e. “Bahasa Inggris”, “Pathway to English”, and “Outcomes Upper Intermediate” are right or not. This research used Alan Cunningsworth’s theory on excellent textbook and tried to find the strengths and weaknesses of the three books based on the given methods above. The study was conducted using evaluation research to evaluate the three English textbooks used by some schools in Yogyakarta. Evaluation steps included taking some samples from the books to see whether they meet the criteria of good textbooks that the researcher developed based on Cunningsworth’s framework. The research found out that Bahasa Inggris meets five standards: aims and approaches, design and organisation, topic, teachers’ book, and political consideration. Pathway to English meets four standards of excellent textbook by Cunningsworth: aims and approaches, design and organisation, teachers’ book, and political attention. Outcomes Upper Intermediate matches five principles of excellent manual by Cunningsworth: goals and methods, design and organisation, skills, topic, and teachers’ book. The researcher also found out that the strengths and weaknesses of “Bahasa Inggris”, “Pathway to English”, and “Outcomes Upper Intermediate”. From the findings above, the researcher suggests the teacher use three textbooks in the teaching-learning process because three books meet the criteria in a good book.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the way to design an online test for computer-based final examination preparation for Junior High School Students using Schoology application. The method used in this research is research and development. First, the researcher analyzed graduation competence standards for the 2017 and 2018 National Examinations, English basic competences in 2013 Curriculum, test indicators of 2017 and 2018 National Examinations, and 2017 and 2018 paper-based National Examinations. The result of the analysis was used to determine the skills, the basic competences, and the test indicators for the test blue print of the online test. Based on the test blue prints, the researcher developed the online test in Ms-Words. The developed test instrument was consulted with the researcher’s consultants to get the external validity. After the external validity was obtained, the test was uploaded in the Schoology application. The online test in the Schoology was put into a try out to students of Grade IX G and H of SMPN 1 Pengasih. The student’s scores in the test try out were analyzed using SPSS Product Moment. The result showed that the students’ scores in the test try out coincided with their scores in their end-semester test. This proved that the test is effective to be used. The test items which were not valid were revised through English teacher group discussion in SMPN 1 Pengasih. After being revised, the online test was ready to be used.

Abstract

This study is aimed at developing Informational Technology Based Supplementary Listening Material for ‘Bahasa Inggris Kelas XII’ and describing the effectiveness of the developed supplementary listening materials. The research belongs to an Educational Research and Development (R&D) and adopted the ten steps of Borg and Gall’s model (1983) which are simplified into three main stages. They are: (1) Preliminary Study, (2) Development and (3) Field Testing. The material development follows Nation and Macalister’s curriculum design model in which needs, environment and principles were taken into account in determining the content and sequence to achieve the goals, format and presentation of the materials and monitoring and assessment.  The developed listening materials consist of student work book and audio recording created with listening media and cool edit deluxe programs. The findings shows that (1) the developed IT based supplementary listening materials yields effective listening materials for the 12th grade students and (2) the effectiveness of the product helps students to achieve the targeted competences.

Abstract

This research is aimed at describing the implementation of English program at Pesantren Ali Maksum in terms of the Community Language Learning, and reveal the strengths and weaknesses of English program in English teaching and learning process in Pesantren Ali Maksum in terms of Community Language Learning (CLL).This research is an evaluation research employing CLL model by Larsen-Freeman (2000) and Richard-Rodger (2003). The data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation and document analysis. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman and Saldana’s flow model of qualitative data research which included data collection, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing.The implementation of English program indicates that English program has been generally well-conducted through six characteristics and eight activities although from some parts need to be improved or changed such as in Larsen-Freeman characteristics. Aggression item the tutor needs to keep a distance to junior students to avoid disrespectful. Richard-Rodger activities term has been well-implemented through eight activities some needs improvement and change. Translation term, the tutor needs training. Group work and listening terms need a change in managing the place in order to avoid disturbance each group.

Abstract

The present study is aimed to describe the development of a model of teaching speaking called Set Phrases, to reveal the strengths and limitations of the model, and to reveal students’ perception on the implementation of Set Phrases in SMP Negeri 1 Candimulyo Magelang. This study belongs to an Educational Research and Development. The model was developed by adapting Borg and Gall’s model (1983) simplified into six steps: 1) Research and Information Collecting or Need Analysis, 2) Planning, 3) Develop Preliminary Product, 4) Field Testing and Experts’ Judgments, 5) Product Revision, 6) Dissemination and Implementation. The field try-out was conducted in one class of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 1 Candimulyo Magelang. The data were collected from interview, questionnaire, teacher’s field notes, students’ note, test results, and experts’ feedback. The collected data were analyzed using four stages of Miles and Huberman (1994) qualitative data analysis: data collection, data reduction, data displayed, and drawing and verifying conclusion. The result of the research showed that Set Phrases was an effective model to enhance students’ speaking skill indicated by the increasing students’ fluency, accuracy, and self-confidence in speaking. Set Phrases indicates to be appropriate for novice learners in large classes and for those who have low motivation in learning English. Besides, the students got benefits of understanding English materials more easily, increasing motivation, and having better interaction with others. Furthermore, this Set Phrases is an effective model to conduct speaking in classroom activities because it emphasizes on continuously graded materials.
