Abstract

Corona virus pandemic which hit the world soon after the launching of school digitalization policy in Indonesia, has forced teachers and students to teach and learn from home, hence from a distance, including teachers and students in frontier, outermost and least developed regions (Daerah 3T) such as those in TTU, Malaka and Belu of NTT Province of Indonesia. This research, therefore, is designed to investigate how English language teachers at high schools in the three regencies managed distance learning during covid 19 pandemic, the effectiveness of the distance learning, problems encountered and the solution: and the potentiality for future enhancement of distance learning. Descriptive method is employed in this research and data obtained were analyzed qualitatively throughout identification, classification, and validation stages. The result shows that English language teachers at high schools in the three regencies generally ran two types of distance learning: digital and non-digital; but both were not effective because of such problems as: the limited access to the internet, electricity supply and lack of skill of both teachers and students in digital learning platforms and education apps. It is to overcome these problems that, teachers also ran non-digital learning. Possibility for digital distance education to be developed and enhanced in the future is obvious because teachers have very strong willingness to collaborate with teachers, also to let their students be able to collaborate with students, from other schools through digital schooling in this era of education freedom (merdeka belajar).

Abstract

This study aims to see whether the university entrance selection path significantly affects the first-year GPA of UNDANA Mathematics Education students. This research was carried out in the mathematics education study program FKIP UNDANA by taking data on the university entrance selection path of 220 mathematics education students who entered in 2014 – 2020 and their GPA data after studying for one year in the mathematics education study program. This data then analyses using simple linear regression theory – one categorical independent variable with several categories assisted by the SPSS application. The study results show that the university entrance path has a significant effect on the first-year GPA of mathematics education students. The F value obtained is 5.043 with sig. = 0.007 < 0.05, so the hypothesis H0 is rejected, and Ha is accepted. In addition, this study also shows that students with SNMPTN entrance pathways have a higher average first-year GPA than students with SBMPTN and SMMU entry pathways.

Abstract

This research aims at describing teacher’s behaviours, students’ behaviours and the interactions which are performed by teacher and students in the classroom. To achieve the aims, the researcher used a case study method, which is qualitative, focusing on Junior High School (JHS) teacher and students, who use English as a foreign language (EFL), in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT), Indonesia. The instrument technique to get the data was participant observation. It was conducted from January to March 2020. The data were analyzed descriptively. It was found that: 1) teacher behaviours including ‘gaining students’ attention’ and ‘giving reinforcement’ are very good and expected to be maintained; others, including ‘motivating students’, ‘managing classroom’, and ‘providing follow up action’ are not really good and expected to be improved; and others including ‘informing learning procedures’, ‘evaluating’, ‘making references’, and ‘reviewing the newly learned material’, are bad and strongly expected to be improved; 2) students behaviours including ‘paying attention to teacher’ and ‘responding teacher’s reward’ are very good and expected to be maintained; others including ‘getting motivated’, ‘participating in classroom management’, and attending to follow up activity’ are not really good and expected to be improved; and others including ‘knowinglearning procedures’, ‘participating in review of material’, ‘demonstrating learning achievement in learning assessment’, and ‘making references’, are bad and strongly expected to be improved; 3) teacher and students mostly performed teacher-oriented interactions which can be seen in activities of ‘asking and answering questions’ and ‘providing patterns of interaction’. It is really recommended for teacher and students to be able to demonstrate those behaviours in the classroom. Behaviours that serve as high class of appearance started from 80% to 100% are very good and expected to be maintained because their capacity quality of supporting learning are high.

Abstract

Research with topics like this is not new, educators usually try to find out the weaknesses of their students in terms of mastery of grammar to solve the teaching and learning problems. English study Program of FKIP, Universitas Nusa Cendana also see this as something urgent so it is very necessary to do to see and identify the weaknesses of students English Education study program in writing scientific papers (thesis) from the grammatical point of view by using the surface strategy taxonomy approach introduced by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). This research is expected to contribute to the teaching and learning process in the study program, especially for several related subjects such as Writing I, II, III, and Academic Writing. By identifying students’ problems in writing thesis proposals, educators, especially lecturers of the English Education Study Program are expected to be able to map the problems of English study program students and make them a reference for teaching.

Abstract

The Dawan ethnic group is one of the ethnic groups who inhabit the island of Timor. This ethnic has artifacts as a hereditary heritage in this society. This artifact is in the form of nonverbal that has a symbolic form and meaning. The symbolic form and meaning of these artifacts can be understood conventionally and must be studied. The process of studying the form and symbolic meaning of this artifact, provides an overview of the ideology, behavior, values ​​and habits of the Dawan community. By knowing the forms and meanings of nonverbal artefacts in the Dawan community, it is possible to know the ideology, behavior, values ​​and habits that exist in this society.

Abstract

This research aimed at finding out: 1. kinds of sentences constructed by semester VI undergraduate students of the English Education Department, School of Teachers Training and Educational Sciences, Nusa Cendana University; 2. their strengths and weaknesses in constructing those sentences; and, 3. solutions to their weaknesses in constructing English sentences. To achieve those aims, this research used descriptive-qualitative research paradigm. The phenomenon to be investigated is how students joining TEFL course constructed certain sentences in communicating with their lecturer or in doing their tasks. The research was done at the English Department of Nusa Cendana University from March 2021 to October, 2021. The instruments used to collect the data were students’online documents and interviews. The data were analysed descriptively based on English grammatical accuracy. It was found that, first, kinds of sentences the students constructed were simple, complex, compound and compound-complex sentences including sentences which are discursive on their own, that is, sentences as complete discourses themselves like “Thank you, Sir!”. Second, the students’ strengths varied: they used various sentence patterns with various words, tenses, structures, and mechanics. Third, their weaknesses were sentence structures, tenses, vocabulary, and mechanics which were not always correctly used. Some sentences, for example, had no subjects or verbs. Fourth, to solve their weaknesses, they say, for example, that they must study harder, memorize English structure, and be more active in reading, writing, speaking and listening in English.

Abstract

This research aims at figuring out possessive construction of Dawan Language in East Baumata Village, Taebenu Sub-disctrict, Kupang Regency. The result of the study shows that posesor in Dawan in East Baumata Village, consists of animate beings (animate) and inanimate beings (inanimate). Inanimate possessors consist of humans and animals, while inanimate beings consist of plants and inanimate objects, such as stones. Semantically, possessive constructions in this language are found in three possessive grammatical relationships (NP-internal relations), namely: meaning ownership(ownership relationship),such as Na David in bidael where bo'nim 'Ox Mr. David fifty-tail', meaning relations section(whole- part relationship),such as Bi Merry muti bilsin missin 'teethwhite clean Meri', and the relation of meaning familial / kinship(kinship relationship), such as Bi Susan bi mokof anmate ton nuan duen 'Grandfather Susan died two years ago'. The possessive construction of the Dawan language in East Maumata Village, Taebenu District, Kupang Regency in general, the owner (possessor) always appears in the left position or precedes the possessor (possessed), both of which appear with the possessive marker mui 'belonging' and constructions that appear without the marking.

Abstract

This article shows and analyses forms, meaning and functions of nouns’ signs of Helong language. The method used in this research is field method with taking note technique and recording. The results of this research shows that there are three nouns’ signs of Helong language that are categorized into: basic forms, combine forms and gemination forms (due to phonological process). There are three basic noun forms of some relative distances, those are -a (that/close to the speaker); -ia (this/close to the speaker) and –ua (far from the speaker). There are three forms of positions’ signs due to the combination of preposition -ne and nouns, those are: nia (ne + -a), nua (ne + ia, = ni) and nua (ne + -ua). There are fifteen forms of nouns gemination due to phonological process are: nga, ngua, ngia, sia, sia, sua, tia, ta, tua, pa, pia, pua dan ra, ria, rua.

Abstract

Figurative language in its function as an artwork is to persuade readers for self-reflection and society as well. This study aims at identifying types of figurative language such as (anaphora, allegory, symbol, apostrophe, personification, metaphor and paradox) employed in three poems entitled “My Sea of Timor”, “I am at War”, and “Oh! Freedom!” of Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão by analyzing meaning, interpreting values pedagogically and giving of vision in terms of community contributions to nation building. “Content Analysis Approach” is utilized, through a documentary research. It was found that the poems portray poet’s hardship experience in the struggle for freedom in the past with his people; and is appealing for a continuous fighting for the enhancement of social and cultural values, and for their sustainability by means of education. It concludes that, to ensure the sustainability of this scientific cultural patrimony it is necessary to preserve and develop the literary works of Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão through educational process i.e his poetries in English language teaching at all school levels in Timor Leste.
