Abstract

The Indonesia Smart Card Program for College (KIP Kuliah) is a form of government intervention to expand access to higher education for students from low-income families. Although this program provides significant financial benefits, KIP Kuliah recipients often face social stigma from their surroundings. This study aims to uncover the experiences and perceptions of KIP Kuliah recipient students regarding the social stigma they experience, especially in the context of lifestyle and consumerism. This study uses a qualitative approach with an in-depth interview method with three informants who are KIP Kuliah recipient students. The results of the study indicate that the stigma experienced by students includes negative labeling and stereotypes that associate the status of recipients with consumer behavior that is considered inappropriate, such as hanging out, traveling, and using expensive electronic goods. The public tends to judge only from the outside appearance without considering the context, such as academic needs, family support, or the results of students' personal efforts. From the perspective of Erving Goffman's stigma theory, this finding illustrates the tension between virtual social identity (public expectations) and actual social identity (student reality). In response to stigma, students demonstrate impression management efforts through academic achievement, organizational involvement, and adjusted lifestyles. This study concludes that although KIP Kuliah has succeeded in increasing access to education, recipients still face social challenges that require attention. An educational approach is needed to dismantle the stigma and build a more empathetic understanding of the social realities of students receiving educational assistance.

Abstract

Germany is a country with an advanced education system that attracts many Indonesian students to continue their studies. Differences in culture, language, and social norms often become challenges in the adaptation process. Indonesian students tend to have less understanding of the importance of intercultural communication as a determinant of successful adaptation in a new environment. This study aims to examine the intercultural communication strategies used by Indonesian students in Germany to support the social adaptation process. The study used a qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of interviews, documentation, and literature studies. Culture shock theory was used to understand the dynamics of adaptation, while the AGIL (Adaptation, Goal Attainment, Integration, Latency) scheme from Talcott Parsons was used to analyze communication adaptation strategies. The results of the study showed that cultural and social differences between Indonesia and Germany were often not predicted in advance by students, resulting in communication barriers, stereotypes, and difficulties in social interaction. The adaptation process takes place through direct experience that encourages students to develop new communication patterns, strengthen cross-cultural understanding, and build social networks. The right adaptation strategy has been shown to accelerate adjustment and support academic and social success. These findings emphasize the importance of readiness in intercultural communication to improve the successful adaptation of Indonesian students who continue their studies abroad.

Abstract

This research aims to explore and examine the role of Acehnese women throughout history, in the political, social, and cultural spheres, by positioning them as active subjects who contribute to the dynamics of society. This research is important because the history of Aceh shows the presence of prominent female figures, such as sultanahs, female scholars, and warriors, who made significant contributions to the sustainability of Acehnese society's identity and social structure. This research uses a qualitative method with a historical-interpretive approach that seeks to understand the traces of women's roles thru narrative analysis, archival documents, literature, and oral testimonies. Data was obtained thru in-depth literature studies of historical manuscripts, local chronicles, colonial archives, and semi-structured interviews with historians, academics, and community figures in Aceh who understand the role of women in local history. The research sample involved 12 key informants who were purposefully selected due to their involvement in historical studies or because of a strong oral tradition heritage in their environment. Data analysis was conducted by reducing information, presenting narratives, and thematic interpretations, resulting in a comprehensive picture of women's position in the historical trajectory of Aceh. The research findings indicate that Acehnese women are not only present in the domestic sphere but also play a significant role in political leadership, the fight against colonialism, and the transmission of cultural and religious values. This finding confirms that the history of Aceh cannot be fully understood without presenting the narrative of women as agents of change. This research contributes to enriching Indonesian historiography with a gender perspective and opens space for a more inclusive and equitable reinterpretation of history regarding women's contributions.

Abstract

Digital transformation in the fisheries sector has brought fundamental changes to the social relations and trust systems among fishermen. This study aims to understand how digitalization through blockchain technology reconfigures social networks and shapes new forms of social capital among fishermen in Sumenep Regency. Using a phenomenological approach, this research explores fishermen’s subjective experiences in adapting to digital systems that demand transparency, accountability, and technology-based trust. Grounded in Robert Putnam’s social capital theory, the findings reveal that blockchain implementation not only enhances economic efficiency but also creates a new social arena that fosters digital trust and hybrid social networks between humans and systems. Traditional trust, previously built through patronage and informal relations, is transforming into a systemic form of trust governed by algorithmic mechanisms. This process generates digital social capital that extends fishermen’s networks beyond local communities, yet also produces ambivalence toward the erosion of traditional collective values. Thus, the digitalization of trust through blockchain represents a complex sociotechnical process that reshapes social structures and the collective identity of coastal communities.

Abstract

Lombok Island has considerable tourism potential, but it also has an equally significant potential for natural disasters. Kuta Village is one of the villages with such potential. Its tourism potential lies in its status as the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ), while its potential for natural disasters, such as tsunamis and floods, stems from its geographical location bordering the Indonesian Ocean. Therefore, efforts to mitigate risks and prepare for natural disasters are crucial. This study aims to analyze and examine the challenges in the process of risk mitigation and disaster preparedness in the Kuta Mandalika Tourism Area. The theory used in this study is Pierre Bourdieu's Social Practice Theory. This study uses a qualitative approach through the phenomenological study method. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, while data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, and documentation. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of risk mitigation and natural disaster preparedness activities in the Kuta Mandalika tourism area involves various parties and stakeholders. The involvement of these actors and institutions plays a role in the formation of habitus and adds capital to support mitigation and preparedness efforts. The capital available in the arena is transformed into knowledge, networks, and infrastructure facilities to support natural disaster mitigation and preparedness efforts, thereby producing social practices. However, in practice, challenges such as structural barriers, cultural barriers, and participatory barriers act as obstacles in the implementation of risk mitigation and disaster preparedness efforts. These challenges also lead to conflicts arising from the presence of dual arenas, which result in clashes of interests and capital

Abstract

Child marriage remains a persistent socio-cultural problem in Indonesia, particularly in North Lombok. Economic limitations or education factors do not merely drive this Phenomenon. Still, it is deeply rooted in the local socio-cultural structures that regulate community behavior, particularly among Generation Z. This study aims to analyse the socio-cultural construction of child marriage among Generation Z in North Lombok through the theoretical perspective of social construction proposed by Peter L Berger and Thomas Luckmann. This Research employs a qualitative phenomenological approach to unpack practices, community structures, and symbolic power embedded in local tradition. The findings demonstrate that child marriage remains socially reproduced due to the internalisation of customary traditions such as merarik, religious legitimation, social stigma related to age norms, and the persistence of patriarchal gender relations embedded within local cultural institutions. Although the internet and social media provide alternative channels of information, these platforms have not significantly shifted long-standing communal values that shape individual decisions. Consequently, the construction of marital knowledge among Generation Z emerges through the dialectical processes of externalisation, objectification, and internalisation within familial settings, community life, and digital environments. The study concludes that the prevalence of child marriage among Generation Z in North Lombok is not solely a result of individual preferences, but rather are relations of socio-cultural forces that shape perceptions, meanings, and subsequent actions related to marriage.

Abstract

The farmer group development program is a form of corporate social responsibility (CSR) implementation that seeks to improve the social and economic capacity of the community. PT Arutmin NPLCT implements a development program for the Nirati farmer group in its operational area as part of its sustainable community development strategy. This study aims to analyze the social capital formed within the Nirati farmer group, describe the forms of empowerment provided by the company, and examine the relationship between the two in improving the group's capacity. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation studies. Informants consisted of the chairperson and members of the Nirati farmer group, PT Arutmin's CSR facilitators, and relevant village officials. The results of the study show that social capital, in the form of trust, norms, and social networks, plays a role in sustaining the coaching program. The empowerment program, which includes technical training, facility support, institutional strengthening, and intensive assistance, provides opportunities for capacity development. However, collective participation remains limited, activities are mostly individual, and a majority of members are not consistently engaged. These results highlight the challenges of translating empowerment initiatives into sustained collective action, emphasizing the role of social capital in supporting gradual improvements.
