Abstract

Audio-visual media is a medium that comprise of sound and image elements, such as films or videos, which can be utilised to deliver learning materials in a more interesting way, including visualising teaching materials, so that students are more keen on studying. This research aims to determine significantly the influence on the use of audio-visual media on Chinese language learning outcomes of L3-level students at Edu Smart Learning Centre and is expected to increase teachers' insights into teaching methodologies as well as deepen their understanding of the functionality of audio-visual media, so that it can be applied in teaching Chinese language.The learning material used for teaching L3-level students at Edu Smart Learning Centre is Kuai Le Zhong Wen, the Chinese language book used at Edu Smart Learning Centre and is for own use.This research is conducted at Edu Smart Learning Centre, especially towards L3A and L3B students. It uses pretest-posttest control group design with one type of treatment. The analysis of the research outcome is t-test analysis. The given treatment is the usage of audio-visual media.The research outcome shows that, with the application of audio-visual media, the Chinese language learning outcomes of L3-level students at Edu Smart Learning Centre are better. This concludes that audio-visual media affects the Chinese language learning outcomes of L3-level students at Edu Smart Learning Centre significantly. Keywords: Audio-visual Media, Learning Outcome, Chinese Language

Abstract

This research explains the humor styles used in the stand-up comedy show by Kiki Saputri. She owns material that is known as "Roast." It is used for a specific person on the show. A roast consists of an insult, which is the background of this research. This kind of comedy can be found on TV programs or Youtube videos that contain comedy content because they get special attention from the viewers. Besides that, many films featured comedians, particularly stand-up comedians. They can use comedy to not only make people laugh but also to criticize, deliver messages, and capitalize on unrest. In this research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research as the method of the research. The analysis used the theory of Arthur Asa Berger. In this theory, Berger said that there are 45 indicators of humor, but the researcher just used insult as one indicator to focus on this research. The researcher wants to analyze the use of insults in the Roast Stand Up Comedy Show in a political context from Youtube. The research results show that using insults can be humorous because it can make the audience laugh. Furthermore, the show was served in good humor but not for serious insults in front of politicians. Thus, they not only entertain the audience but also deliver messages or criticism directly to the politicians.  Keywords: Humor, Roast, Insult, Comedian, Politician.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of errors and the factors that cause errors in the use of directional nouns “li” and “zhong” made by STBA-PIA students in the fourth semester of academic year 2018/2019. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, namely to describe the types of errors and the factors of errors. The instruments used in this research are elicitation techniques and interview techniques. The research subject was taken using snowball sampling techniques, which was as many as 25 subjects. The results of the research conducted by research on STBA-PIA students in fourth semester of academic year 2018/2019 are 10 omission errors, 6 addition errors, 14 misformations and 3 misordering. Meanwhile, the factors that cause errors are namely interlingual errors, which are 7 respondents and intralingual errors, which are 15 respondents.Keywords: Language Errors, Directional Nouns, “li”, and “zhong”

Abstract

This research’s purposes are to explain the types of figures of speech used and what are the functions of those used by the author in the novel I Will Be Here with You. This research utilizes the qualitative descriptive method. The data resource is the novel itself entitled I Will Be Here with You. The data collection technique is documentation. The results of the study found as many as 12 types of figures of speech used, namely 比喻 (bǐyù) makes abstract things seem concrete, visualizes things more generally, 比拟 (bǐnǐ) gives a clear impression, helps readers understand the conveyed feelings, 夸张 (kuāzhāng) evokes strong resonance strong and imagination, accentuates elements and characteristics in the novel, 婉曲 (wǎnqū) makes it easier to accept what is written, 对偶 (duì'ǒu) gives a strong sense of rhythm and focused meaning, helps readers draw conclusions effectively, 排比 (páibǐ) increases language momentum and expression effect, emphasizes meanings, 层递(céngdì) deepens understanding and impression, 顶真 (dǐngzhēn) gives fluent expression, fresh writing style or unique writing form, 对比 (duìbǐ) accentuates thoughts, 反复 (fǎnfù) emphasizes main thoughts, written in order , has a strong sense of rhythm, 设问 (shewèn) captures attention and guides the readers’ mind, 反问 (fǎnwèn) evokes feelings.Keywords: Novel, Figures of Speech

Abstract

The in-service training delivered in Pendidikan Profesi Guru (PPG) aims at increasing teacher’s knowledge and skills in teaching English. Language Teaching is dependent on  philosophical assumption on the nature of language and language learning. Language teaching is terminated at using language skillfully in various communicative events. The in-service training is based on a general theory that is implemented through the application of high order thinking (HOT), the innovative instructional design, namely: Problem Based Learning (PBL), and Project Based Learning (PjBL). This study intended to find out the application of HOT, PBL and PJBL. The data of this study were taken from lesson plans (RPP) and its implementation in classroom interaction. The data were analyzed by using the related theory as temporary category of identification, classification and interpretation. The results show that (1) the teachers  are constrained by  the use of operational verbs of HOT in formulating its indicators in KD 3 (knowledge competence), and in KD4 (skills) which resulted in the improper way of teaching English,  (2) the teachers are compelled  by the syntax of PBL and PjBL into improper steps of teaching English, (3) the teachers unconsciously made technology as media as the objective rather than as facilitation to language learning and consequently it turned the teaching of English into teaching about language, like teaching content knowledge such as Biology, Physics, etc, rather than enabling the students to use English communicatively. These findings lead to the conclusion that the teaching of English should be mainly based on the theory of language and the theory of language learning. Other theories imported from other disciplines or from educational psychology should be adapted to the theory of language and language learning.Key Words: Media, Competence, High order thinking, Innovative instruction

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the applying of K-W-L (Know-Want-Learned) strategy in teaching reading comprehension at IAIN Takengon. The subjects of the study were 30 students of HTN (hukum Tata Negara) class which were at second semester. By using qualitative design, the data were collected through observation, and giving questionnaire. Moreover the researcher administered pre-test and post-test to the students in the way measuring how the KWL strategy brings improvement in students reading comprehension. It was found that the mean score in cycle 1 was increasing, from 50,50 to 75,83  and in cycle II, the mean score was 85,67. Furthermore The result of observation and questionnaire given to students showed that students became more understand about the text read and more enthusiast and the class activity become more fun and enjoyable. Keywords: KWL Strategy,teaching English, reading comprehension.

Abstract

The study aims to find out whether the application of visual learning media in the form of flash cards either has a significant or no effect on the mastery of Chinese nouns in students in the Jiayou Mandarin Course. The research design used is a quantitative research design. The data collection technique used is in the form of a test which amounts to 20 questions with data processing techniques for reliability testing, normality testing, homogeneity testing, and hypothesis testing. The results of the calculation of the reliability test with KR20 obtained a value of 0.710 which means the reliability criteria are high, the Lilliefors Normality Test in the pre-test data for class I-A is 0.198 and class I-C is 0.094 at a significant level = 0.05 of 0.220 which means the data is normally distributed. Homogeneity test of the two data groups with the F test obtained a value of 1.01 at a significant level = 0.05 of 2.48 which means the data is homogeneous. Hypothesis Testing with t-test obtained a value of 7.795. Then the t table obtained at the significant level = 0.05 is 2.131. From these two values, it is found that  thitung bigger ttabel (7.795 bigger 2.131). So, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means that there is a significant influence between flash card media on noun mastery in class I-SD students of the Jiayou Mandarin Course in Medan.Keywords: influence, use, flash card, mastery, noun, Jiayou mandarin course.

Abstract

The rapid development of technology has had an impact on the field of education. In this case, an educator must be able to be more creative and innovative to build and stimulate students' interest to learn in the classroom while teaching learning process. One of the positive things from the impact of technological developments to support the teaching and learning process is the use of technology-based learning media such as making interesting videos and uploading them to YouTube. YouTube videos can be repeated and can be accessed anywhere if the device and internet network support. YouTube videos were used in this study as a learning media to improve students’ grammar ability. The sudents in this study are the first semester majoring accounting at Institut Teknologi dan Bisnis Indonesia. The total number of students in this Classroom Action Research (CAR) is 30 students. After taking two cycles of action, it can be concluded that the use of videos that are made as attractive as possible and uploaded to YouTube as a learning media to improve students' grammar ability is effective in the teaching and learning process, besides that YouTube is also universal, can be viewed repeatedly, and can enhance the creativity of an educator.

Abstract

It is a fact that emojis are a growing phenomenon in the last few years. They have gained their popularity with their typical varieties in the digital era across countries in the world. The emojis are used among people as a way to assist the process of conveying emotions in textual communication that lacks nonlinguistic cues. Emojis were created and developed as visual mixed expressions of sentiments, attitudes, or moods for use in modern communication technologies. Then, in more broad perspective and context, in term usages, they are also generally perceived that they do not only have unique semantic and emotional features, but also are closely related to many areas such as marketing, law, education, health, etc. This paper reviews the nature of emoji, the developmental history of emojis, the functions of emojis in communication, and the usages of emojis in a real-digital world interaction and communication. Key words: emoji, function of emojis in communication, and the usages of emoji in digital world.

Abstract

This study about the semiotic interpretation of Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film with Roland Barthes Theory. This study aims to (a) find out the signs that found in “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film and (b) describe how the signs interpreted in “Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan” film. This reasearch uses descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from words and phrases which are collected from ‘Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan’ film script. The results shows that there were 15 signs found in Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan film. Timbangan (balance) as the most frequent signs was about 8 data such as: stranded whale; stairs vibration; power head waste; eating tissue; broccoli hair; remember your thigh; you are so fat ya, but it’s OK it’s fresh; and both of you are so different, even you are sisterhood, followed by Cinta (love) with 4 data namely: moles; stretch mark, reduce the rice; and use sunblock, and 3 data for Karir (career) such as pregnant; round face; and she is so old school. The signs includes in Karir (career) when it relates to the development, growth, and progress of someone’s job/profession. The signs that associate to Cinta (love) connects to the deepest someone’s emotional and interpersonal affection. The signs Timbangan (balance) that have a correlation with someone’s weight and physical condition or appearance. Timbangan (balance) were realized by the utterance that refers to physical condition and closely to mock. Cinta (love) associate to the word, gesture, or utterances that express a love or deepest personal affection. Karir (career) was described by a simple word to mock that closely sounds sarcastic and exaggerating. Keywords: Semiotic, Film, Imperfect: Karir, Cinta dan Timbangan
