Abstract

A language that a person uses on a daily basis inside a society is a flexible tool that can change to meet the needs of its users and the times. The Dutch language continues to have a significant influence on post-colonial writing, particularly in novels and romances. Y. B. Mangunwijaya's Burung-Burung Manyar is a well-known work of post-colonial literature. Teto, the protagonist, is at the heart of the narrative, spinning a tale of adolescent infatuation with undertones of colonialism, treachery, retaliation, and disappointment. Readers are given a sense of wonder by the unusual usage of language. Y. B. Mangunwijaya's choice of language in this story is a fascinating example of how Dutch culture is represented. He gives considerable thought to how a Javanese-born individual who speaks Indonesian as their first language may utilize a Dutch phrase. This phenomenon led the author to use linguistic style and diction to delve deeper into this facet. The research's conclusions are as follows: (1) the author of the novel successfully employs and modifies the diction to represent Dutch culture; and (2) the author's consideration of the speaker's context enables the diction to accurately represent Dutch culture through the linguistic interaction of two cultures, Javanese and Dutch. Keywords: Burung-Burung Manyar, culture, stylistics, acculturation.

Abstract

This study applies Greg Garrard’s ecocritical theory to analyze J.G. Ballard's The Drowned World and explores twelfth-grade students' insights of its environmental themes at MAN 2 Rejang Lebong. Aiming to enhance students’ environmental literacy, it uses an integrated approach combining literary analysis with qualitative and quantitative methods. Ecological themes in the novel are explored alongside an assessment of students’ awareness and understanding of environmental issues. Data were collected through questionnaires completed by 40 students and semi-structured interviews with a subset of students post-reading. Findings indicate that The Drowned World—a portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world shaped by global warming—contains key ecocritical components such as wilderness, apocalypse, animals, dwelling, and the Earth. However, the mixed-methods analysis exhibits 80% of students faced challenges in understanding themes connecting to the components, due to language barriers, limited interest, and insufficient classroom discussion. Only 20% demonstrated an understanding of critical issues like climate change. These findings suggest that the novel alone may not effectively enhance environmental awareness. The study recommends contextual teaching and guided discussions to aid students in grasping ecological themes. Its contribution lies in integrating mixed methods and ecocritical approaches. Both strategies are very essential for promoting environmental literacy and advancing sustainability education.

Abstract

This study examines Prabowo Subianto's presidential inauguration speech using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to explore how language shapes and is influenced by power and ideology in the context of Indonesian politics. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method is employed to provide a deep, comprehensive analysis of the speech text, without altering its original meaning. The data for this study is the text of Prabowo Subianto’s inauguration speech, sourced from official transcripts or recordings. Data collection involves observation and documentation, while data analysis utilizes the three CDA dimensions, i.e. textual analysis, discourse practice, and social practice. The findings reveal that the speech is structured to emphasize gratitude, a national vision, and a call for unity, using inclusive language and repetition to foster a sense of national responsibility. The discourse analysis shows that Prabowo’s speech aims to build a positive, inclusive image and reach a broad audience through media distribution. Socially, the speech positions Indonesia as a strong, independent nation, with Prabowo portraying himself as a leader committed to democratic values and national unity. The study concludes that the speech effectively constructs a political identity based on inclusivity, responsibility, and unity.
