Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability of STBA-PIA Medan third-year undergraduates in using the separable words in Chinese language. Quantitative descriptive research is conducted on 40 students whom are both the population and sample through saturated sampling technique. The instrument created to collect the required data for analysis is a test with 25 questions. Content validity is utilised, and the reliability coefficient of each question in the instrument with KR-20 formula is 0.734, meaning the instrument has highly reliable. The result shows that the students' average ability in using the separable words in Chinese language is 65.3, indicating that they are not competent. Keywords: ability, separable words, Quantitative Research.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the ability of Semester IV STBA-PIA Medan students in using the adjective rexin and reqing. To achieve this goal, the researcher used a quantitative descriptive research design where the population was 113 students, and the sample was taken using the Simple Random Sampling technique to 23 students in the Fourth semester of STBA-PIA Medan T.A. 2020/2021 as the sample of this research. The instrument and data collection technique used is to give test questions to the sample. The validity of this study uses content validity, and the calculation of the test questions for each word is 10 questions using the KR-20 Formula. The reliability value of the reqing adjective test instrument is high, it is 0.612 and the reliability value of the rexin adjective test instrument is also high, it is 0.638. Analysis of students' ability test results in using reqing adjectives shows that from the range of values the highest score obtained is 100 and the lowest score is 50, the mode and median values are 70, the standard deviation value is 15 and the average value is 71.74 which is included in the sufficient competent category. While the results of the student's ability to use the adjective rexin show that from the range of values the highest score obtained is 100 and the lowest score is 40, the mode and median values are 70, the standard deviation value is 14 and the average score is 72.61 which is included in the in the fairly competent category.Key Words: Usability, Adjective, Rexin, Reqing

Abstract

Rhetoric is a way of expressing ideas through language, using language effectively. This paper takes "Send You a Little Red Flower" as the research object. The purpose of this research is to analyze the rhetorical devices used in the movie "Send You a Little Red Flower" and find out the application factors of rhetoric. According to the theory of rhetoric as the theoretical basis, this paper uses qualitative research and literature method for research and investigation. The results of the study show that there are 12 types of rhetorical devices in the film, namely: metaphor, analogy, borrowing, exaggeration, rhetorical questioning, parallelism, contrast, repetition, questioning, duality, loopback, and layering, among which repetition accounts for the most important. The application factors of using rhetoric include objective and subjective factors that affect the script of the film, making the language expression of the film more vivid and vivid, highlighting the image of the characters, and emphasizing a certain emotion of the speaker.Key words:rhetoric; film; "Send You a Little Red Flower"

Abstract

Indonesia consists of various tribes and possesses hundreds of distinctive native languages. Therefore, the influence of native language on English pronunciation is seen as an obstacle for Indonesian EFL learners. In Second Language Acquisition (SLA) it is classified as language transfer. Selayarese language as one of the native languages existed in South Sulawesi Province also gave positive and negative transfer towards English pronunciation. It was verified through a qualitative case study employed towards 20 students from XI IPA 5 at SMAN 1 Selayar. Several methods were undergone to obtain the data namely questionnaires and students’ recording. The result of the study revealed that Selayarese language gave major negative transfer towards English vowel /æ/ and clusters /bl/. Moreover, Selayarese language gave minor negative transfer towards English long vowels /ɑ:/, /i:/, /u:/, /ɜ:/, /ɔ:/ and vowel /ɒ/, diphthongs /əʊ/, /aʊ/, /eə/, /ɪə/ and /ʊə/, also consonants /v/, /ð/, /ɵ/, /ʃ/ and /z/. besides that, Selayarese language also gave minor positive transfer towards; English vowels /ɛ/, /ʌ/, /ʊ/, /ɪ/ and /ɔ/, diphthongs /aɪ/ and /ɔɪ/ and also consonants /b/, /d/, /g/, /h/, /dʒ/, /k/, /l/, /m/, /n/, /p/, /ŋ/, /r/, /s/, /t/, /w/ and /j/.

Abstract

This study used descriptive qualitative research method to describe and analyze 16 students’ exercise while using Chinese complement of duration phrase. This study also used Miles, Huberman, and Saldana for the data analysis. According to Yang’s theory, Chinese complement of duration phrase has four common formulas, which are S1: S+V(+了)+时量补语(+了); S2: S+V(+了)+时量补语(+的)+O(+了)(O为一般名词); S3: S+V(+了)+O+V+时量补语(+了); S4: S+V(+了)+O+时量补语(+了)(O为人称代词/确定的人的名词. Each student was given 10 Indonesian sentences to translate into Chinese sentences using this phrase. According to the results, there were 37 error of omission sentences (49%), 34 disordering sentences (45%), 2 error of addition sentences (3%) and 2 error of substitution sentences (3%). Through interviewing these students, there was one factor that causes error in those sentences; it was intralingual factor in which students did not really understand to use complement of duration. Key Words: complement of duration phrase; Error analysis; Qualitative research

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out whether the number/amount of chinese movies watched by 1st grade of Kristen Hosana high school students would have positive impact with their mandarin listening ability. This research/study used quantitive research/study method, with 42 1st grade high school students of Kristen Hosana as the subjects. The test used in this paper are from YCT 3rd level questions, therefore the validity and reliability are trustworthy. Afterward used Excel software to process the data into data description display. Through the result of the data calculation of correlation analysis it can be known that r = 0.69 and refering to the interpretation of the correlation coefficient, the relationship between these two variables is high. These two variables were significantly related (t = 6). Therefore it can be concluded that the number of chinese movies watched by 1st grade high school students of Kristen Hosana is significantly related(affected) their listening ability.

Abstract

This article aims to reveal the outcome of the new normal habit of wearing face mask and its contribution in boosting or improving students’ self confidence in speaking English. The habit which was once forced as the token of keeping someone healthy and to break the spreading of corona virus -19 disease during the pandemic turns out to be a bless in disguise. The subdue of the pandemic is the good news to educators as well as students. Teaching and learning activities conducted from home has raised other issues regarding the behavior and mental health of students. The restriction in socializing bored the students. The opening of schools and allowing students and teachers have interaction during the teaching and learning activities is followed by health protocols, one of them is wearing face mask. Face mask is obligatory.  The reluctance and the awkwardness in wearing the face mask in the beginning has become the reluctance and awkwardness in taking the mask off. Students in English speaking classroom admit the fact that they feel more comfortable and more confidence expressing themselves during presentation or speech delivering with their masks off when the wearing of face mask is no longer obligatory.The approach of this writing is descriptive qualitative. Observations, field notes and interview were conducted to eighty-one high school students who use English as their second language at school. The finding is surprising. Twenty-five percent of the students claim that their self-confidence improve when they wear mask during class presentation.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to reveal the forms of ancient, modern and contemporary poetry in expressing social problems and the reasons for the expressions of social criticism. The design of this research is a descriptive qualitative. The objects of the research are the forms of expression towards social criticism and the reasons behind them which are found in the ancient Tang poetry “Zi Jing Fu Feng Xian Xian Yong Huai Wu Bai Zi自京赴奉先县咏怀五百字”, the modern poetry “Da Yan He Wo - De Bao大堰河——我的保姆”, and the contemporary poetry “Xiang Chou乡愁”. The results of the research show that there are 26 forms of expression of social criticism in the three poems, including 13 straightforward social criticism (50%), 6 symbolic social criticism (23.08%), 2 cynical social criticism (7.69%) and 5 explanatory social criticism (19.23%). There are three reasons for the expressions of social criticism: (1) the historical aspect (national administration), (2) psychological aspect (sharpening the author's expression attitude), and (3) imagery.Key Words: Social Criticism, Expressions Form, Poem

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of language styles and the factors in language style usage used in the film The battle at Changjin Lake directed by Cheng kai ge, Tsui Hark and Dante lam. Language style is a way of expressing thoughts through language in a unique way by choosing appropriate words and combining them in certain sentence structures, in order to create new and fresh ways of conveying. The design of this study is descriptive qualitative with documentation data collection techniques. The results of the data analysis show that there are 6 types of language styles, namely 3 styles of Jièdài (Metonymic), 7 styles of Fǎnwèn (Erotesis), 2 styles of Duì'ǒu (Antithesis), 1 style of Páibǐ (Parallelism), 4 styles of Fǎnfù ( Repetition), 3 styles of Shè wèn (Rhetorical) . The style of language most often used is Fǎnwèn (Erotesis). The results of the data analysis also show that the factors causing the usage of these language styles in the film are a person's identity, work, external environment, mood, time and location. The factor that causes the most language style usage is the external environment, so that the audience can feel that environment.Keywords: Film, Language Style, The Battle of Chang Lake

Abstract

Deaf students are included in students with special needs because it is a type of physical disability. In teaching, teachers are faced with various challenges. For this reason, special methods are needed in teaching so that learning becomes effective. The support and participation of the school are also needed. English lessons in public schools find many difficulties, especially in schools with special needs. This study aims to describe the teacher's strategy in teaching English to deaf students at SLB C Muzdalifah. This research used a qualitative method. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, and documentation (pictures). To analyze the data obtained, the authors use data collection techniques, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the teacher applies a learning strategy that contains repeating material and periodically checking students' understanding. However, in practice, it is still less effective. The sitting position of students in the classroom is also arranged before the lesson begins. Total Physical Response and Grammar Translation Methods are used as a strategy for developing English vocabulary for deaf students combined with sign language. However, even though the teaching is still not effective, in general, it can be concluded that the objectives of teaching English using this strategy can be achieved.
