Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of parents' attention on learning achievement in English, the effect of learning motivation on learning achievement in English and to determine the effect of parents' attention and motivation to learn on learning achievement in English simultaneously. The research method used was a survey. The sample size was 52 students; with the sampling technique used was random sampling. Hypothesis testing uses 2-way ANOVA test. The results showed that there was a significant influence of parents' attention and motivation to learn together on students' English learning achievement at MTsN 6 East Jakarta, as evidenced by the value of Sig = 0,000 < 0.05 and F count = 26.255. There was a significant influence of parents’ attention on students' English learning achievement at MTsN 6 East Jakarta, as evidenced by the value of Sig = 0.001 < 0.05 and t arithmetic = 3.380. There was a significant influence of learning motivation on students' English learning achievement in MTsN 6 East Jakarta, as evidenced by the value of Sig = 0.004 < 0.05. Parental attention and learning motivation had a significant effect on learning achievement.

Abstract

Contrastive parallel-structured sentence (CPSS) was a traditionally artistic kind of Vietnamese literature, which was originated from the Chinese. The aims of this article is to investigate all kinds of the CPSS and the semantic field aspects inherently existing in it; adding that the article targets in what social occasions the Vietnamese use the CPSS the most. To have a deep insight into the semantic field aspects in the CPSS, the article has applied integrated methods such as descriptive method, analytical method and statistic method. In this article, the semantic field in the CPSS was showed, analyzed and discussed to reveal the application of linguistic units such as the phenomena of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, fixed phrases and especially semantic field, adding that to show how words are exploited with the same semantic field.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the book of Proverbs for how someone gets wisdom, which the ability to understand everything clearly and use knowledge to overcome a problem. The problem in this study is how verses in the Book of Proverbs can represent wisdom that aims to teach someone to understand each teaching. This research is a qualitative research using descriptive method. The data are taken from The Book of Proverbs written by Solomon. Data collection techniques are reading analysis and documentation. This study uses three steps of work, they are (1) providing data; (2) data analyzing; and (3) presenting the results of the data analysis. This study uses pragmatic theory. The results of this study indicate that verse fragments in articles taken from the Book of Proverbs can teach someone to have wisdom, that wisdom can direct people into discipline, happiness and achievement of success.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the students’ perception of the use of WhatsApp Group and Google Classroom-based learning in English classes at College of Vocational Studies - IPB University, Bogor. The study was taken for the applied multimedia learning system by the teachers as the authors of this paper. The data were taken from questionnaires of the students’ perception of the implemented based learning by using Likert scale. The scoring system was done by recommended and an un-recommended points. The data were analyzed descriptively using table scoring of percentage 1-100 aiming at the students’ points of view or opinions. The result of this study which was focused on learning material in English classes proves that the students agree that this based learning is effective to be applied and used. The average score of perceptions is 89 indicated from the six components of the product (comfortability, content, efficient use, language, clarity, and fun-use).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to test students' perceptions of using Evieta-based learning in Business English classes at the Vocational School - IPB University, Bogor. The study was prepared by lecturers as authors of the article for the multimedia learning system used. The data comes from questionnaires on how students perceive implemented learning using the Likert scale. The scoring system performed recommended and non-recommended points. The data were analyzed descriptively using a scoring table from 1 to 100, which is intended to represent the students' views or opinions. The results of this study, which focus on study materials for the English Business class, show that there is a consensus among students that this learning-based learning is effective when applied and applied. The average perception score is 87, indicating six elements of the product (comfort, content, efficient use, language, clarity, and enjoyment).

Abstract

The goal of this research is to look into the use of Directed Reading Thinking Activity to improve students' reading comprehension in the tenth grade at SMAN 1 Tanete Riaja. The following research questions were addressed in this study: 1) How does the implementation of Directed Reading Thinking Activity (henceforth DRTA) improve students' reading comprehension?2) What are the students' perceptions toward the DRTA strategy's implementation? This study employs a quasi-experimental design with both an experimental and a control group. The experimental class was taught using the DRTA strategy, while the control class was taught using the conventional strategy. The participants in this study were chosen at random and were divided into two classes: class X-1, which consisted of 32 students as the experimental class, and class X-2, which consisted of 30 students as the control class. The data was gathered through a reading comprehension test and a questionnaire. According to the findings of this study, using the DRTA method increases students' scores more than using the conventional strategy. The experimental class has a mean score of 76.40, while the control class has a score of 50.3. It indicates that the DRTA strategy significantly improves students' reading comprehension and makes a positive contribution to their cognitive development. Furthermore, the results of the questionnaire show that the majority of students respond positively to the implementation of the DRTA strategy in the classroom.

Abstract

One of the most challenging skills for non-English major students is writing an essay since they have to pay attention to the language structure and must be able to transfer their thoughts and ideas into the target language. In regard to solving this problem, regular change and development are needed in teaching English writing. One of the methods that increased to be used is collaborative writing using Google Docs. This study aims to investigate the non-English major students’ perspectives and difficulties in collaborative writing through Google Docs. This study examined 22 students from a state polytechnic in Makassar who have involved in collaborative writing activity through Google Docs. A convergent parallel design was applied in this study, where the data collected by using a questionnaire which consists of closed- open-ended questions and interview. The closed-ended questions data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive statistic with SPSS. Further, the collected data from the open-ended questions and the interview was analyzed qualitatively using a narrative method. The results show that the students have positive perspectives on collaborative writing activity through Google Docs and did not encounter many difficulties when they were involved in this activity.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics is a linguistic branch that studies the relationship between language and society. In this entire world, every people have their personal language style when they have interacted with other people. With the language variation that people have, they are able to mix some languages on their single utterance. When one language is mixed with the other language, in the sociolinguistics study it is called code-mixing. By applying code-mixing in social life, it has been widely used by a lot of people over the world. One Indonesian YouTuber named Gita Savitri Devi does code-mixing in some of her videos. Therefore, this research focused on code-mixing appears in Gita Savitri Devis’s YouTube channel video. This research aimed to find out the types of code-mixing that emerge in Gita Savitri Devi’s YouTube video. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and the writers are the main instrument. This research applied the documentation method in collecting the data. This research focused on analyzing the types of code-mixing of Hoffman by applying content analysis. Furthermore, the result of the types was calculated by using Sudijono formula. In this study, the writers found that there were fifty-two data in types of code-mixing. The type of intra-sentential of code-mixing was the highest type and involving a change of pronunciation was the lowest one.

Abstract

People with high levels of literacy usually have low crime rates and high intelligence. It is expected that the school community itself will happen in the school environment like teachers and students. The purpose of this research is to collect information on the learning styles and preferences of young junior high school students who are curious and critical. It is very useful to cultivate interest in reading English literature books in order to increase the cultural and social value of students who intend to apply for school literacy campaigns. The reading literacy development model used is the Plomp model: preliminary research, prototyping and evaluation. Science books such as textbooks recommended by the Cambridge Courses may have a major and popular impact because they can increase their value in various courses that use English. Educators are expected to use related books in their learning and lead the school's reading and writing movement. The result of validation of teaching materials indicates that reading literacy material with the use of English-language publications is important and can be tested.

Abstract

Writing is a skill that requires students to keep on practice. This research is held to answer research questions as follow: (1) What are the writing problems that common appear to the 1st semester students of English Education program of Universitas Muslim Maros in the academic year 2020-2021, and (2) What are the possible factors which cause those students’ problems in writing. This research was conducted in qualitative way. Since this research was conducted during pandemic of Corona Virus 19, Google Classroom application was also used as an instrument. The participants’ selection is based on non-probability sampling based on their availability, time flexibility, convenient and represent some characteristics to ease the writer’s investigation. The writer then analyzed the results of the observation and the interview descriptively. Results of this research showed that (1) most of the students were facing difficulties in Word Chosen, then (2) the main error the students mostly made especially on Grammatical related to connectors, pronoun references and correct verb, (3) whereas on Mechanical the students made mistakes on punctuation, spelling and capitalization. To another research question, this research revealed factors which contributed problems to the students in writing are lack of practice, time distribution and less motivated.
