Abstract

One of the most interesting aspects of The War of the Worlds is the way in which the Martians are described, and the manner with which they take over the world. The aims of the study were to reveal the survival instinct of the main character in the novel “The War of The Worlds” of Herbert George Wells’s work, and how changes in behavior and the main character was currently in a state of urgency to survive. This study employed qualitative descriptive study with psychoanalytical approach initiated by Sigmund Freud, focused on literature as a reflection of real life. This research data were collected from the novel “The War of The Worlds” (1898). The study revealed that survival instinct of the main character of novel came from basic instincts, life instinct (Eros) and death instinct (Thanatos) according to Sigmund Freud’s theory. The Martians described as aliens invaded earth much more sophisticated than human, which made the main character who just a civil society striving to stay alive. The Martians had only one purpose, to destroy all humans and take over the planet. During The Martians invasion, the main character was not only trying to survive but also strived for source of food and water. In his effort to stay alive, the main character in the novel The War of The Worlds (1898) had to kill others to guarantee he stayed alive. Being trapped in regret and despair, he decided to end his own life, but something strange happened to The Martians, they were killed by bacteria. Human were immune to the bacteria, but The Martians from Mars were not and eventually died.

Abstract

English is a need in this era. Most education activities are conducted using and integrating with this global language. The objectives of this research are 1) types of code switching are mostly used by a bilingual teacher; 2) the bilingual teacher’ reasons in use of code switching in class. SMPN 12 Makasar applied bilingual class in Math, Science and English subjects. And this research focussed on a Math teacher as the research subject. Qualitative method was used by combining observation and interview. This research shows that math teacher used code switching in opening, main and closing session. There are three types of code switching used by math teacher. They are inter-sentential, intra-sentential dan tag switching. Bilingual teacher combined Bahasa dan English because of some reasons; talking about a particular topic, inserting sentence fillers of connectors, using repetition used for clarification, softing request and command, being aare of real lexical need, and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. Abstract

In Indonesia, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) taught in all school levels. So, the effective teaching methods should be employed by the English teachers in achieving the successfulness of EFL teaching and learning process. In order to bring much more benefits for the teachers’ improvement, evaluating teachers’ teaching in the classroom should be conducted. Analyzing the students’ perception becomes one of the ways to use. In hence, the researcher conducted a research that aimed to describe how is the students’ perception about learning activities through humanistic approach in learning writing especially CLL (Community Language Learning) as one method used in applying this approach. This research employed a qualitative experiment research design. A qualitative experiment seeks to produce a description, typically without the use of numbers. It can be subjective in that the results are based on the experimenters’ point of view. Several methods are used in a qualitative experiments; introspection, surveys and questionnaires, and direct observation. These methods mostly involved observation of the user from the researcher. In selecting the participant, the researcher used purposive sampling technique where the participants were choosen based on certain criteria. The purposive sampling technique was used to collect the subjects at MTsN Ma’rang. The data were collected by employing observation and interview. From the data collected, the research found finding. The finding is based on the research objective. There are four learning activities perceived as positive learning activities. They are Group work, Translation, Free Conversation, and Analysis. There are two learning activities perceived as negative learning activities. They are recording and analysis. Key words: students’ perceptions, humanistic approach, learning activities, teaching

Abstract

This research aimed to determine the implementation of hypertext which can improve students’ understanding in English reading. This research is action research. conducted in a class by carrying out stages such as planning, implementing, and reflecting on collaborative and participatory actions to improve performance as a lecturer so that student learning outcomes can improve. Despondences are the students are in class E even semester of 2018/2019 academic year. The result showed the ability of students to understand English reading has increased through hypertext media where the highest score is 93, the lowest score is 60 with an average of 74.5. With the details of 8 students scoring 93, 10 students scoring 76, 6 students scoring 69 and 4 students scoring 60.

Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language to mentally retarded persons is much more complicated than normal EFL students, and it requires specific techniques and methods. The aims of the research are to find out the profile of disabled students’ learning style and to elaborate on how well Total Physical response meets the needs of disabled students with different learning styles. This research applied pre-experimental design which used to see the result of applying the TPR Method for disable students with different learning styles in vocabulary development and the data were obtained from the questionnaire, interview, and classroom observation. The research result shows that there are 3 types of learning styles in the classroom, namely visual learning, auditory and kinesthetic learning style. The data revealed that the average pre-test results of students before being given teaching material using the TPR method is 5% while the results obtained by students after giving teaching material using the TPR method is 77%. 100% of visual learners have improved the result of the post-test after being given the material. 100% of auditory learners also have an increase in the result of the post-test after the provision of teaching materials using the TPR method. However, only 50 percent of 100 percent kinesthetic learners experience an increase after the provision of teaching materials using the TPR method. There are many factors that can influence the result of the student’s test. It can be in the form of internal factors that can stimulate the concentration and the motivation of students in learning English

Abstract

This research deals with how quizzes promote the students’ motivation in learning. There are two types of motivation in learning namely intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to doing something because it is inherently interesting or enjoyable, and extrinsic motivation refers to doing something because it leads to a separable outcome. Quizzes are formative assessment to measure the ongoing teaching and learning. This research is a descriptive under qualitative research which was conducted in SMP Katolik Santa Maria Palangka Raya. It was taking all the English teachers and three classes of students chosen randomly (there would be one class to represent each grade) as participants. The questionnaires were applied to all of participant students to find out how the quizzes promote their motivation in learning and to all of the English teacher to support the findings on students’ responses. It finds out that quizzes are (1) challenging, (2) checking their understanding, (3) having various types, (4) practicing the teamwork, (5) providing feedback, (6) improving their learning and (7) practicing their competition. So, quizzes simply involve the instruments of the two types of motivation; intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

The study attempted to explore lecturers’ perceptions on the use of Facebook-based writing material in English class at STKIP Muhammadiyah Rappang, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The present study was a part of research and development (R&D). There were two writing lecturers of the English Education Department in 2016/ 2017 as the subject of the study. The data gained from the questionnaires of the lecturers’ perception on the implementation of Facebook-based instructional material in English writing class using the Likert scale. The scoring system was done positive and negative statement score. The data have been analysed descriptively by using the frequency and percentage. It aimed to measure the lecturers’ opinion. To interpret the lecturers’ responds, the researchers used the interval estimation. The interval estimation was applied to measure the parameter of population based on the score of interval rates which ranged to 4 categories level. The results found that the lecturers agree that the content of learning English writing by using Facebook-based instructional materials are suitable for the students’ level, their need for learning and their daily lives. The average score of lecturers’ perceptions is 3.4 which indicates that from the four components of the product (content, language, presentation and graphic) overall shows suitability to the writing English material and to the students. It means that the implementation of Facebook-based instruction in teaching writing is interesting for the lecturers. It was proved by the results of the lecturers’ perception

Abstract

This Research aimed to find the students’ reading skill achievement after teaching them through look and say method. The questions posed in this research are “how is the first-year students’ ability of SMAN 1 Tanralili Maros in reading English?” and “How is the improvement of the students’ reading skill through look and say method?”. The method applied in this study was pre-experimental which applied pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was the first-year students of SMAN 1 Tanralili Maros. The writer applied the purposive sampling technique, so the number of the sample was 30 students. The research of data analysis indicated that there some a significant increase in the students’ achievement in reading skill after teaching them through look and say method. It was proved by the result of the statistical analysis of the level significant 0,05 with the degree of freedom (df = n-1 = 29) indicated that t-test value was 10,57. While t-table was 2,120 where 10,57 > 2,045.Based on the fact the writer concluded that the reading skill of the first-year students of SMAN 1 Tanralili Maros that had got treatment by teaching them through look and say was significantly different before they got treatment.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the types of learning style which students have. The population in this study was the students of English Department in academic year 2017 which amounted to 24 students. The research was conducted at Muslim University of Maros (UMMA), South Sulawesi. This research was a qualitative descriptive research. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaires and documents. The questionnaires in this research were used to determine what learning styles were dominated by students in the learning process. The results of the learning style analysis of the students showed that there are 12 (50%) students were categorized as visual learners, 8 (33%) students were categorized as auditory learner, and 4 (16%) students were categorized as visual-auditory learners.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the forms of verbal and nonverbal communication in teacher talk. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. The instrument of the study was the FLINT System and Darn classification. The participants of this research were the teacher and students in a speaking class of the English Department. The results show that teacher talk gives a positive impact on students’ performance. During the class interaction, the teacher successfully met the aspects of good teacher talk and applied some forms of FLINT system of verbal communication and some elements of non-verbal communication. For the FLINT system, the teacher applied to ask questions, giving encouragement, giving direction, critiquing students’ behavior, dealing with feelings and, prising. For the form of nonverbal communication, the teacher applied only two forms, those are kinesics which is referred to as gestures, and haptics is referred to as touching.
