Abstract

Learning activeness is an activity that focuses on student development physically, intellectually, emotionally, and mentally so that students are not only recipients of information but are involved in learning. Student activeness is very important because it affects student motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. Low student activeness can be seen from students being sleepy, not paying attention to the teacher's explanation, not focusing, and not having the courage to ask questions and express opinions. The writing of this final project aims to describe student learning activity through the application of card-sort-type active learning methods in the fifth grade. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The results showed that, after applying the card sort method, the average learning activeness of fifth-grade elementary school students increased from 53.33% to 80.67%. In conclusion, the card sort type of active learning method can enhance learning activities by providing opportunities for students to be actively involved in the learning process. The author's suggestion for future researchers is to continue investigating the application of active learning methods such as card sort, to enhance learning motivation.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of using English subtitles on Netflix as a language learning strategy. The research focuses on how subtitles contribute to the development of English skills, the challenges encountered, and students’ suggestions for effective integration in learning. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining descriptive quantitative data from close-ended questionnaires with qualitative insights from open-ended responses. The participants comprised 41 sixth-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Sriwijaya University, selected through purposive sampling based on their active use of English subtitles on Netflix. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively to identify patterns in perceptions, while qualitative responses were thematically analyzed. The findings indicate that students perceive significant benefits from using English subtitles, particularly in vocabulary enrichment, listening comprehension, pronunciation, grammar awareness, and exposure to authentic language use. However, challenges such as unfamiliar vocabulary, rapid subtitle speed, divided attention, variation in language styles, and occasional technical issues were also identified. Students’ motivations for using subtitles ranged from intentional language learning to casual entertainment, with many adopting a balanced approach that combines both purposes. Suggestions for maximizing the learning potential of subtitles included selecting appropriate content, integrating short clips into classroom activities, and using subtitles as a fun and engaging learning tool. The study concludes that English subtitles on Netflix serve as both an effective and enjoyable medium for language learning. Their integration into personal and classroom practices can enhance learners’ engagement, autonomy, and exposure to authentic English, thereby supporting long-term language acquisition.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the understanding of Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM) alumni regarding the university’s entrepreneurial vision, identify its implementation in their businesses, analyze supporting and inhibiting factors, and examine its contribution to personal and professional competence development. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation with five alumni who actively run businesses. Data were analyzed using Miles et al.’s (2014) interactive model consisting of data reduction, display, and verification. The findings indicate that alumni understand UNM’s entrepreneurial vision, although the depth of understanding varies and tends to increase after engaging directly in business activities. The vision’s implementation is reflected in diverse sectors, including education, fashion, culinary, and creative services, with adaptive strategies utilizing social media and alumni networks. Supporting factors include theoretical knowledge from coursework, lecturer guidance, family support, and technology access, while key obstacles involve limited capital, lack of post-graduation mentoring, and intense market competition. Entrepreneurial experience contributes to the development of technical and non-technical skills and the creation of new jobs. These results highlight the importance of institutional support in strengthening the implementation of the entrepreneurial vision through continuous alumni development programs.

Abstract

The growing intensity of social media usage within society has encouraged educational institutions to adopt digital platforms as strategic tools for promoting their services and building effective communication with prospective students and parents. This study aims to examine the use of interactive social media marketing strategies at SD Perumnas I, with a focus on the effectiveness of these platforms in enhancing engagement, as well as the challenges encountered by the school. A qualitative approach was employed, involving field observation, in-depth interviews with two key informants (a classroom teacher and the school’s social media administrator), and document analysis. The findings reveal that since the COVID-19 pandemic, the school has utilized platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, and TikTok for communication and promotion. WhatsApp was considered the most effective for direct interaction with parents, while Instagram and TikTok were more successful in reaching broader audiences through visual content such as school activity videos and photos. However, several obstacles were identified, including infrequent content posting, limited creativity, and insufficient training for teachers in managing digital media. Internally, the school supports these efforts by providing Wi-Fi access and encouraging personalized approaches through WhatsApp groups. This study concludes that the success of social media-based school marketing strategies depends on content consistency, technical skills, and the relevance of information presented. Therefore, improving teachers’ capacity in digital branding and content management is essential to support effective social media promotion in primary education settings.

Abstract

The balance between energy expended and energy consumed plays a crucial role in shaping motor skills, which in turn influences an individual’s ability to perform various physical activities optimally. Understanding daily calorie requirements is therefore essential for supporting physical performance, maintaining health, and preventing nutritional imbalances. This study aims to analyze daily caloric needs through four primary components: Body Mass Index (BMI), Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), Specific Dynamic Action (SDA), and classifications of energy expenditure based on activity levels. These components provide a comprehensive overview of the metabolic processes that determine individual nutritional demands. A cross-sectional research design was employed to gather data on 38 students enrolled in the Sports Nutrition course within the Physical Education, Health, and Recreation Study Program at Manado State University. BMI was used to categorize participants’ body composition, while BMR calculations helped estimate baseline energy requirements at rest. SDA was incorporated to account for the thermic effect of food during digestion, absorption, and nutrient metabolism. Additionally, daily activities were classified into specific energy categories to evaluate variations in energy expenditure throughout the day. The results of this analysis are expected to contribute valuable insights into students’ nutritional needs, helping tailor dietary recommendations to support their academic and physical training demands. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of accurate caloric assessment in promoting optimal motor performance and sustaining overall well-being among university students engaged in sports-related disciplines.

Abstract

In the era of artificial intelligence (AI)–driven education, integrating emerging technologies into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) pedagogy remains a critical challenge, particularly in balancing linguistic improvement and affective well-being. Despite growing research on digital tools, few studies have empirically examined how AI-assisted podcast creation can simultaneously enhance speaking fluency and alleviate foreign language anxiety (FLA) among Gen Z learners. This study employed a mixed-method design to investigate these dual outcomes among 120 undergraduate EFL students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. Participants were divided into an experimental and a control group, with the former engaging in AI-enhanced podcast projects using Podcastle and ElevenLabs, while the latter conducted traditional oral presentations. Quantitative data from pre- and post-tests and the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) were triangulated with qualitative data from reflective journals and focus group interviews. Statistical analyses revealed significant gains in speaking fluency (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.85) and a substantial reduction in anxiety levels (p < .01). Thematic analysis further indicated that AI-assisted podcasting fostered greater learner autonomy, digital confidence, and emotional regulation. These findings substantiate the pedagogical value of AI-driven multimodal production tasks and provide an evidence-based framework for integrating technology, fostering affective learning, and developing communicative competence in EFL contexts. The study underscores the transformative role of AI in reshaping 21st-century language education and provides a timely contribution to the global discourse on human–AI collaboration in learning.

Abstract

This study investigates English Education students’ perceptions of writing their first research proposal, focusing on the cognitive, linguistic, emotional, and instructional challenges they experience. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving twenty undergraduate students, ten third-semester students enrolled in the Academic Writing course, and ten fifth-semester students enrolled in Research Methodology. Data were collected through an open-ended Google Form questionnaire and were analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) six-phase framework. Findings reveal six major themes: (1) limited prior knowledge and conceptual uncertainty, (2) difficulties understanding research components, (3) academic writing challenges, (4) emotional reactions including anxiety, low confidence, and overwhelm, (5) need for clearer guidance, examples, and support, and (6) expectations for improving proposal-writing instruction. Third-semester students commonly expressed confusion and unfamiliarity with basic research concepts, while fifth-semester students demonstrated greater theoretical understanding but still struggled to apply these concepts to actual writing tasks. Students also reported linguistic challenges such as organizing ideas, paraphrasing, using appropriate academic vocabulary, and applying APA formatting rules. Emotionally, students experienced anxiety and fear of making mistakes, which hindered their ability to engage confidently in the writing process. They consistently emphasized the need for step-by-step instruction, practical examples, writing workshops, and constructive feedback. Overall, this study highlights the importance of strengthening research literacy instruction in English Education programs by integrating conceptual understanding, academic writing support, process-based guidance, and emotional scaffolding. Enhancing these areas can help students develop the confidence and competence necessary to complete their research proposals effectively.
