The language, be it verbal or non-verbal, has been the primary medium of human interactions to take place. However, there still seems to be a little attempt for a thorough investigations in understanding problematic issues that may emerge because of the language. Issues in Applied Linguistics & Language Teaching (IALTEACH) aims at bringing together scholars whose interests fall upon the areas of applied linguistics and language teaching to publish their scholarly articles in IALTEACH. As the term applied implies, this journal combines interdisciplinary discussions on language issues that would bridge not only systematic investigations of the language , but also the theories, research methods, and practices within the scope of applied linguistics and language teaching. Therefore, the contributions are welcome in the following areas (but not limited to) of study; current trends in ELT, language learning & acquisitions, teaching media &technology, linguistic aspects of language learning & teaching, English for specific purposes, and Englishes in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Having and mastering the correct grammar in written even spoken English is considered as one of the major aspects needed in basic communication or delivering each other’s means. Therefore, this research is done in purpose of finding what are the most often grammatical mistakes that happened while communicating in English. But while working on this research, we, as a group, decided to set up a barometer, that the search and observation will only take focus on spoken English grammar, which is considered as nowadays underestimated factor in delivering proper English in daily life. Mostly by non-native speakers. We implement this research to 10 random students in UIB, give out a simple question, then through their answers we analyse the grammatical errors that we'll possibly find. And lastly draw conclusion from what we can get.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate students’ errors in determining past regular and irregular verbs. The formulation of the problem in this research are: 1. How is students’ ability in using past regular and irregular verb form? 2. Which past verb form is mostly misused? This research is about analyzing students’ errors at second grade of SMP Negeri 1 Bintan. The population of this research were 245 students. The researcher only took 32 students as the subject of the research. There is 1 test instrument used to collect the data. The researcher distributed the test in the form of daily conversation. To analyze the data, researcher classified the students’ errors into excellent, good, fair, and poor. After analyzing the data, it was discovered that the mean score of students’ ability is 75 which means that students’ ability in determining past regular and irregular verb belongs to good category. While, the mostly misused past verb form is irregular verb. This is because irregular verb differs from the regular tense form. It is suggested that students should memorize about the past irregular verb and should know the formula in the regular verb.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the development of Powtoon-based learning media. Powtoon media is a web-based application provided for users to create animated presentations using images, provide music. The advantage possessed by powtoon media is that it is able to provide various animated cartoon displays that can attract students' attention to pay attention to the lessons delivered by the teacher. Lessons for the 2021/2022 academic year. This classroom research was carried out in three meetings. The author used one group pre-test and post-test design. Respondents in this study were 4 students of class X IPS-1. The results of this study. Based on the research that has been done, it can be proven by using the results of the pre-test score obtained that has a score of 50,75 and the post-test score has 75,25. The test score has increased with an increase in value of 24,05. Based on this research, it is proven that learning by using video powtoon will have an effect on increasing learning outcomes. Therefore, the powtoon learning media is proven to be able to improve learning outcomes, especially for class X students on recount text.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the argument structure of undergraduate students’ research articles that focus on the introduction section. The data collection was conducted by analyzing the proceedings in the "Background" section written by undergraduate students at university in Indonesia. The data were then analyzed by using a corpus. This research found type of argument of this study were proclaim, disclaim, entertain, and attribute. The lexical choice that was used proclaim with a total of 46. The lexemes entertain a total of 37. The next lexical choice that was used is disclaim with a total of 33. Finally, attribute a total of 26 as the lowest engagement in appraisal.

Abstract

The study aims to explore the use of Flipgrid’s features as online learning tools for the architecture students taking the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) to improve their presentation skills. The present study utilized a case study and involved twenty-six students of the Architecture Department in Universitas Kristen Duta Wacana, Yogyakarta. This study employed a qualitative method. The data were collected from students’ presentation videos uploaded on Flipgrid and interviews. The result of the study revealed that FLIPGRID plays a notable role in improving the students’ presentation skills, especially in their confidence, fluency, facial expressions, and gestures. Abstract

Gender equality has been promoted by UNICEF since 1995. One strategical way to promote gender equality is through education by exposing the youth to nonbiased learning materials. This paper investigates the representation of gender roles in two English textbooks for senior high school students. Gender related images and texts are taken as the data. The data were analysed using Bruggeilles and Cromer’s (2009) framework for gender typical roles. Findings reveal that in both textbooks, males have the roles as leaders in domestic, social, and occupational sphere while females are considered as keepers, protectors, and caretakers in those spheres.
