The language, be it verbal or non-verbal, has been the primary medium of human interactions to take place. However, there still seems to be a little attempt for a thorough investigations in understanding problematic issues that may emerge because of the language. Issues in Applied Linguistics & Language Teaching (IALTEACH) aims at bringing together scholars whose interests fall upon the areas of applied linguistics and language teaching to publish their scholarly articles in IALTEACH. As the term applied implies, this journal combines interdisciplinary discussions on language issues that would bridge not only systematic investigations of the language , but also the theories, research methods, and practices within the scope of applied linguistics and language teaching. Therefore, the contributions are welcome in the following areas (but not limited to) of study; current trends in ELT, language learning & acquisitions, teaching media &technology, linguistic aspects of language learning & teaching, English for specific purposes, and Englishes in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This study aims to identify English vocabulary learning strategies used by non-English major students in the Intensive English Class (IEC) program, as well as explore the difficulties they face in the learning process. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research involved four students and four IEC tutors at a private university in Barito Kuala, South Kalimantan. Data were collected through classroom observations and in-depth interviews. The results of this study reveal that students use various strategies to learn vocabulary, namely recording new vocabulary along with its meaning and example sentences, memorizing by repeating, watching movies, or listening to English music, using online dictionaries or translator applications and asking directly to tutors or classmates. The strategy most often used by students is to record new vocabulary along with its meaning and example sentences, then the least used is asking directly to tutors or classmates. The main difficulties faced by students are lack of motivation and interest, as well as difficulties in understanding and applying vocabulary in various contexts, especially related to changes in word forms in sentences. The implication of the research is that students can increase their motivation in vocabulary acquisition through fun learning activities. Furthermore, teachers are also expected to be more creative, innovative, and give appreciation to students so as to create a pleasant learning atmosphere.

Abstract

Effectively, a speech's contents and the choice of words can reflect and describe the speakers’ personalities or characters and their power. It can shape the public’s perception, be influenced by the figure, and reflect the speakers' viewpoints. This research used Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to identify the power in Donald Trump’s speech which was delivered on National Security and Terrorism in The Wake of The Orlando Massacre on June 13, 2016, at Saint Anselm College in Manchester.  The text analysis proved that the power was represented through Pronouns, Repetition, Diction, Synonyms, Antonyms, and Assumptions. Discursive Practice showed the power came from the terrorism incident could bring into a sensitive issue that got many responses and attention from the public. The power also came from his social status in the community and institutions, both in politics and business. Trump’s rank socially made him get a lot of support.

Abstract

This research investigated sociocultural factors' influence on language learners' abilities, specifically in the context of English education in Indonesia. The various social backgrounds of Indonesians posed difficulties in English instruction due to differences in communication standards. The research aimed to determine social and cultural factors that impacted the English language skills of primary-grade students by providing insights into the educational context at SD Smart School Jakarta. It employed a descriptive qualitative technique within a case study research design. The research comprised two English teachers and grades 5 consisting of 56 students. Through data analysis and engaging in conversations, the study highlighted the crucial significance of motivation in overcoming obstacles in both speaking and writing. An inclusive English learning environment incorporating various methodologies was advantageous for students. Moreover, the active participation of parents was identified as a crucial element in improving the English language skills of elementary school students. The results emphasized the importance of motivation, a favorable learning environment, and parental assistance in acquiring English language proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to know the need for ICT-integrated English language instruction among EFL high school students in the 21st century. It also examines the importance of digital literacy in meeting the educational requirements of learners in the digital age, the concept of a digital learning environment, and its role in developing digital literacy skills. This research applied a mixed-method approach involving qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. The data were collected from a questionnaire that involved 40 high school students in Batam, Indonesia. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation, questionnaires, and interviews. The findings indicated that students are positive about using ICT in English Language Learning, are satisfied with ICT facilities, and are willing to use it for learning at home. Teachers agree that ICT improves English proficiency but are concerned about time, skills, and support. They also understand the impacts of the media. There is a readiness to embrace digital technologies for education.

Abstract

The purposes of the analysis are to discuss the revenge and love of the main character in Maleficent movie through attachment theory. The method used for this analysis is qualitative method. The theory for this analysis is used from attachment theory, initially introduced by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, serves as a widely accepted explanation for the development of affectional bonds between individuals (Bowlby, 1983). The data for this analysis are taking by watching the movie and analysis the dialogue from the movie that related. This analysis examines revenge and love in Maleficent using attachment theory. A qualitative method analyzes key dialogues to explore emotional bonds.This the result concludes the film with a message about the power of love, revenge that can transcend differences.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the influence of self-directed discourse on students' speaking abilities in SMAN 20 BATAM. The self-directed dialogue technique is a practice that integrates practical ways to communicate or contextual practice with simulations. Self-directed dialogue encourages students to use their words to create discourse; group learning can do this, but the guiding idea is that learning is the responsibility of the individual students. Students feel more comfortable explaining why they want to develop by using their own language because it is more relatable to them. One method that can help students become better speakers is self-directed dialogue. Speaking skills are divided into four categories: fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. A one-group pre- and post-test design was employed in the pre-experimental method by the researchers, this four-week study involved four meetings, including treatment. 46 students in Phase-F (the eleventh class) of Brilliant were the samples that were collected. Speaking rubrics were used to collect the data, which SPSS v26 was then used to process. According to the study's findings, students’ development scores on average were 38.89 on the pre-test and 65.39 on the post-test. The statistical data indicates that the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted, as indicated by the significance value of the t-test (0,000 < 0,05). Based on the results, the researcher draws the conclusion that Phase-F students at SMAN 20 BATAM can enhance their speaking abilities by introducing self-directed discourse. This suggests that students' speaking abilities can be enhanced through self-directed dialogue in an effective and significant way.
