The language, be it verbal or non-verbal, has been the primary medium of human interactions to take place. However, there still seems to be a little attempt for a thorough investigations in understanding problematic issues that may emerge because of the language. Issues in Applied Linguistics & Language Teaching (IALTEACH) aims at bringing together scholars whose interests fall upon the areas of applied linguistics and language teaching to publish their scholarly articles in IALTEACH. As the term applied implies, this journal combines interdisciplinary discussions on language issues that would bridge not only systematic investigations of the language , but also the theories, research methods, and practices within the scope of applied linguistics and language teaching. Therefore, the contributions are welcome in the following areas (but not limited to) of study; current trends in ELT, language learning & acquisitions, teaching media &technology, linguistic aspects of language learning & teaching, English for specific purposes, and Englishes in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

Vocabulary is one of language components that are important in English. This research was designed to analyze the inhibit factors of students’ English vocabulary mastery. The objective of the research is to analyze and find the inhibit factors of vocabulary mastery that experienced by the students. The method used in this research was qualitative method. While the approach that used here was case study approach. The researcher took the subject of the research from seventh graders of Global Junior High School in academic year 2017/2018. In this research, the data collection methods were used observation, questionnaire, and interview. Observation process was done when the teacher was teaching in the class. Questionnaire was given to all the students in seventh grade in Global Junior High School. Whereas Interview was done to the six randomly selected students and one English teacher. From the result of the analysis from the four instruments, the researcher found many inhibit factors that happen to the students, such as: similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriate use. The result of the research is expected to be used as reference or idea to create or develop further research. This research also can be used as reference or consideration to the institution or the teacher to improve the learning and teaching technique that can improve the students’ vocabularies

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze several categories of sentence fragments in student’s composition as well as to ascertain the source of the errors from the questionnaire that given by the researchers. The researchers utilize the approaches of St Pit Corder Error Analysis to examine the data. The data are two written text, which appeared to be an English Composition written by eight students of Universitas Balikpapan from fourth semester and five different Departments. The second data is a questionnaire that answered by the eight participantsdifferently. The researchers found five variants of sentence fragments that made by the students in their English compositions. The five types of sentence fragments are the absence of subject, absence of verb, uncompleted thought, incomplete verb, and complex errors. The questionnaire demonstrate that the incomplete knowledge of English is the source of student’serrors. This type of errors is known as Intralingual errors.

Abstract

English took a crucial part in the world. It has become an international language all over the world, and everyone should learn English. English for Young Learners should start right away, as soon as possible. The implementation aims to achieve students who can learn English well since they are in kindergarten and the other aims are the authors can become a good teacher with good teaching method for the students. The place for the teaching is TK Generasi Pengubah. The participants for the implementation are 17 students. The team conducted the meeting four times and each meeting have different materials for the students. As a result of the implementation, the team are welcomed by the students at that school. The students do enjoy every meeting of the lesson and even ask the members to come again to teach them

Abstract

This research aims to find speech styles on the Breakout music program by hosts in Net TV. The researcher is interested in doing a research about speech styles in the Breakout music program special Paramore because the speakers in the music program use speech styles when use communication with other people. The research questions in this research are the kinds of speech styles by male and female hosts and the differences between male and female of the speech style used hosts utterance on Breakout Music Program in Net TV. In the research, the researcher uses qualitative design. The finding of this research is the kinds of speech styles by male and female hosts that are found in Breakout Music Program special Paramore which classifies into five styles those are frozen style, formal style, consultative style, casual style and intimate style. The finding about differences between male and female of the speech styles used hosts utterance on Breakout Music Program. In the Conclusion, male hosts utterance data contains sixteen data involve in consultative style, forty-three data involve in casual style and five data involves in intimate style and female hosts utterance data contains twelve data involve in consultative style, twenty-eight data involve in casual style and six data involves in intimate style. Both male and female have three speech styles, but male is more in the third finding, while female also has three speech styles but it just a little.

Abstract

Being able to communicate using target language highly depends on the Willingness to Communicate (WTC). This study is aimed to find out what the difficulties encountered by the teacher when trying to encourage student’s WTC and how they cope the problems. This study took place in Ende East Nusa Tenggara. In collecting the data, the writer used semi-structure interview. The result revealed that there are some difficulties faced by the teacher while encouraging student’s WTC. Those were: the students were afraid of being corrected, incomprehensible input of the student related to the material and the learning schedule arrangement. The second, the teacher used teacher-fronted strategy that is also known as IRF, facilitator-oriented strategy and learner-oriented strategy to encourage student’s WTC. In conclusion, based on teachers’ perspective, the students were willing to communicate if the teacher facilitated them by some suitable strategies. This study suggests any English teacher that should concern on WTC of student. The teacher should depend on good teaching: employing one strategy alone does not potentially bring success in encouraging student’s WTC. Then, employing all the three strategies in single meeting are possible to strongly encourage student’s willingness to communicate. Abstract

This paper purpose to analyze the politeness strategies by costumer service the pawnshop and cash collateral. Following this research, the researchers want to analyze politeness strategies are dictated by customer services in the places of pawning in Balikpapan. It is focused to observe grammar and courtesy of employees of that places that will serve its customers. Since over here it can be said the costumer service has the thoughtful characteristic to serve the consumer such as their reaction about strategies to pull of consumer to join and believing. In the pawning place which is we are the researchers to looking for they are have the different threatening to convey the strategies and they have the method to expressive their threats like giving the brochure and straight to many ways about question.

Abstract

This research was aimed at identifying the kinds of illocutionary acts spoken by the major and minor characters in the movie, perlocutionary acts performed by the hearers towards the utterances spoken in the movie, and the contextual aspects that influenced the illocutionary and perlocutionary acts indicated in the movie. The qualitative research was applied as the research design and the data were collected through content analysis. The writers employed purposive sampling as their sampling technique. Based on the research findings, the writers identified five kinds of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s theory, namely, representative, directive, commisive, expressive, and declaration. Furthermore, the writers identified 37 perlocutionary acts performed in the movie and the study showed 15 different situational contexts influenced the illocutionary and perlocutionary acts identified in the movie. In short, the kinds of illocutionary act that frequently appears and gives big influence in the movie is a directive illocutionary act.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to find out about the frequency of student verb errors, the most frequent errors, and did those errors affects the intelligibility of their composition. The subject of this paper is some of the 6th semester students. The finding later shows the frequency of their errors, the most frequent errors, and their errors caused by incomplete application of rules did affect their intelligibility in writing composition.

Abstract

In teaching and learning English, many students have difficulty understanding the text in a reading, especially the descriptive text. Therefore, the objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of the THIEVES strategy in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text at the eighth-grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Tarempa. It was an experimental research using one group pretest-posttest design. The total population is 109 students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Tarempa. In this research, the researcher used purposive sampling with a sample of 35 eighth-grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Tarempa. To collect the data, the researcher used tests and questionnaires. The test consists of a pre-test and post-test to determine how effective is the THIEVES strategy in reading comprehension of descriptive text. And using a questionnaire to know the students respond to the THIEVES strategy. In this research, the mean score of the pre-test was 63,86 before the treatment. After the treatment, the mean score of the post-test was 79.43. Then the researcher used the t table to calculate and hypothesize. The result showed that the test of (t-table = df = 0.6817 = 34) at the 5% significance level. The questionnaire showed that students' responses to the THIEVES strategy in reading comprehension of descriptive texts are ACCEPTABLE. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the THIEVES strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension of descriptive text at the eighth-grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyah Fatahillah Tarempa.

Abstract

In the field of pragmatics, controversies arouses all the time between Cooperative principle and Politeness principle. Some believe Cooperative principle (CP) should be universally accepted, without considering of Politeness principle (PP) while others argue that PP should be taken as the first principle in social interactions. However, the author states in this paper that both CP and PP are significant in daily communication. They can co-exist and should cooperate with each other in guiding people’s utterances in different level, especially in different cultures. This paper tries to illustrate clearly the superiorities and limitations of CP and PP. The analysis serves the next part in which the author explains the feasibility and must for the two principles to co-exist by comparing and case study. And thus, the author finallyconcludes that CP and PP can co-exist and should cooperate for better communication among cultures. Throughout the whole paper, the author not only provides arguments and detailed analysis, but also makes comparison by using examples and detailed contexts to prove her statement. Thus, the explanation and argumentation become reasonable, logical and vigorous. By presenting this paper, the author is going to provide a complete understanding of CP and PP, analyzing them and comparing them with each other. Also, by demonstrating the different level of usage for CP and PP, the author emphasizes the importance for the two to cooperate, especially under different cultural backgrounds. In the way, she hopes that daily communications among people would be easier and more successful.
