Abstract

Promoting students to be independent learners is challenging for English teachers. Students accustomed to learning based on the teacher's instruction and usually waiting for any materials will find learning through autonomous learning difficult. Moreover, English teachers would also obligate to lead the students to foster their learning independently. This article aims to analyze any difficulties found in EFL classes during fostering students' autonomous learning. The research was conducted under a qualitative approach by using a phenomenology design. The research was conducted at MAN Kota Solok and further developed by involving 4 English teachers and 160 students in four classes. The research found that the problems in fostering autonomous learning in EFL classes lie in 4 reasons: time availability, teachers' creativity, and competence, materials resources, and class size. The finding strengthens that all elements in the educational system should be ready to run autonomous learning, which involves the readiness of teachers, students, institutions, and the government to support the implementation of autonomous learning in EFL class.

Abstract

The research is aimed at analyzing about the process of implementing classroom assessment and conducting formative assessment in English as Foreign Language (EFL) at Islamic Junior High School. The approach of this study used a qualitative research. One of the qualitative research designs applied in this study was case study design. The data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation to an English teacher, as well as some observed students. Methodological triangulations were used to validate the data collected, which was then analyzed qualitatively and reported descriptively. The findings revealed that there are three points related to this research; the teacher has already understand about the concept of formative assessment, the teacher has already conducted the formative assessment in EFL classroom, and the challenges faced by teacher while conducting the formative assessment in EFL classroom . The challenges were the teacher' incapacity to design activities for the classroom and evaluation standards for including formative assessment, the enormous number of students in each class makes it impossible to provide quick feedback to them or incorporate comments into group activities, and given the constrained amount of class time, formative assessment is time-consuming and cannot be used. especially in light of a centralized educational system that prioritizes summative rather than formative assessment

Abstract

The current trend of ELT in Indonesia is to learn English at young age. Young learners are perceived as more successful language learners compared to those learning English in their adulthood. This article aims at analyzing interlanguage variations of Indonesian young learners, serving as evidence of their English acquisition. The findings showed that Indonesian young learners of English have not been able to produce tense-marking verb, and omit some grammatical morphemes such as –s iending in simple present tense, and –s ending in possessive. The interlanguage variations are influenced by L1 transfer, overgeneralization and simplification. It is expected that the findings contribute to better comprehension of Indonesian learners’ English acquisition..

Mastering vocabulary is the main modal to improve students' language proficiency. A limited vocabulary will obstruct them from mastering a language and its language skills. Drilling is still viable for increasing students' vocabulary knowledge, particularly for English beginners. To make the students enjoy in acquiring vocabulary, the drilling becomes a routine task done inside and outside the classroom. This investigation used an experimental research methodology with a one-group, pre-test, and post-test design. The research instruments used written test guidelines and documentation guidelines. While checking its validity, it is used Point Biserial Correlation formula. For its reliability, it is used KR-20. By contrasting the values of the t-test and t-table (7.863 > 2.093), the study's findings showed an increase in the students' vocabulary mastery after implementing drilling routine tasks. However, another kind of routine task by utilizing any media is recommended to be implemented.

The research instruments used for developing and revising the media were field notes, expert validation sheets, and a questionnaire that measured the acceptability of the media. The products developed are 56 pieces of cards named CISAR (Chain Story Cards), one teacher manual, and one student manual. Based on the results of experts’ validations, the media has met the accessibility and appropriateness criteria but required a few revisions to meet practicality requirements. Meanwhile, the small scale tryout results involving thirty-six tenth graders of a public senior high school in East Java, Indonesia, CISAR is feasible in its design, language, and has suitable material for the target users since the design considers age-appropriacy, the language is adjusted to the level of proficiency of tenth graders, and the materials follow the syllabus of tenth graders. However, improvements to the manual book were required to make the cards easier to use. Feedback given by the tryout participants confirms that the developed cards serve their intended purposes of helping tenth graders learn speaking and grammar

Further, orally, the omission of a summarization step in the conclusion move hampers students in reminded any point of the presentation thereby hampers the audience in strengthening their recall and understanding. The transition between spoken and written genres within the PowerPoint slide hampers through the dissipation move in both. Thus, the teacher should take into account the importance of rhetorical knowledge toward the presentation movement either in the oral or PowerPoint slides.
